You don't need an engine hoist to get an engine out of a Nova (assuming it's a Nova you are doing of course).

Just drop the engine and gearbox out on the floor, and jack the bodyshell up high enough to pull the engine clear.

As Colin says - put the jack under the engine and gearbox and move the jack up so it is just taking the weight - undo the engine and gearbox mounts (back gearbox one first just so the engine doesn't fall out on you whilst you are laid under the car!)

Lower engine and gearbox to the ground and either with the help of a couple of mates lift the shell whilst the engine is pulled out on the jack or, wiggle the jack out from under the engine , then jack the shell up sufficiently so the engine can be pulled out.

I have a engine hoist you could borrow but I am 165 miles away !
