View Full Version : should i sell up??
right, so i have acquired a lot of parts and panels to rebuild my GTE and GSI, BUT I'm suffering a crash of confidence? do proceed with rebuilding 2 cars or go for my dream of doing the 3 Tarmac rally events Ive dreamed of since i was a lad, the tour of Mull, the Jim Clark, the Manx international? these events i would have to do in a nova 1600,
truly I'm at a loss of what to do :( i want both, but at the age of 33 i need to choose a path:cry:
please vote.
Why don't you just concentrate on rebuilding the GSI?
IMO you need to actually make a start on the GSI :) once you get the ball rolling you'd feel more like finishing it
How much is it going to cost you to build a tarmac spec 1600?!!!!! lol
After collecting all the parts it would be a shame to sell up, but I see where your coming from, there has been many many times that I have thought 'wtf am I doing at 33?' whilst building the Sport
If you do sell up please buy a ready built minter :) and sell some parts to me lol

Id guess £30k will see a 1600 with an "avrage" spec.
Id go for the rallying, Its an aweful lot of time/money/effort, for what essentially at the end, will be a nova GTE/GSI.
Too far gone IMO.
sell the whole lot up and buy something already built IMO , that way the person that built the car you buy has already wasted all there money on it, and if you bin it you wont be as mad because you never put the time in to make it, also all those lovely parts you have would fund a real nice finished road/rally car!!
oh, and weigh the shells in:dlol
oh, and there isnt a `sell up and scrap it` option so i cant vote!

This. /\
Sell your best bits, then buy something like this CLICKME (http://britishrally.co.uk/classifieds_view.php?id=171&sid=3adc54510eb5ad0d4c3642724900203d)
as said get the gsi all done, rather than splitting your time and effort up.

Sell up and buy a rover old man
buy a clean shell and reshell the GSI
Thanks for the opinions, I may have to buy a rover 75 as I took up golf last year :(
The problem for me is I am not wanting to regret building the gsi by missing out on doing those rallies,
I suppose I could just wait till the midlife crisis appears and use it as an excuse to get a rally car lol,
It's also the fact that is I sold all the crap I have I could by a complete car,
Hmmmm I might look into rally car hire, cheaper than buying
Rally car will get written off sooner or later.
Get GSI finished and keep it for ever.
Just build the gsi enjoy it then rally car the gte if you still have that bug then
Follow your dreams before its too late!
sell everything and spend it on drink and whores!!

Get the GSi build underway then see how you feel. Don't start both projects as you will fail straight away and throw the towel in.
If you want to do the rally thing then you will need some wedge. You would need a sponsor I would have thought and that would not be easy to come by.
Im if you cant be bothered before you start dont start. Sell it up and buy somthing decent lol
This.
done that earlier, it helped by taking my mind off novas for a bit lol
sell everything and spend it on drink and whores!!
NOW THATS A PLAN:d

its not that i cant be bothered, its just the cost of it all,

i wont be doing them both at the same time, i would crack up lol, the rally thing is only 3 events i want to do, probably best just to hire for the 3 events
Follow your dreams before its too late!
its never to late, ive got a good few months in me yet lol

I instead say; what does your heart tell you?
If it's a rally car, donate all the gsi bits to me for free, safe in the knowledge that you saved another gsi! You'll crash And die anyway, or at least eat steak through a straw forever.
If it's, carry on with the gsi, well then sod off. Lol

Rebuld the Nova, once it's done you'll have it forever BUT also do Mull too. Share the cost with me, I'll do it one year and you the other haha. Seriously you could compete in Mull for alot less than 30k but may not be competitive...but hey it's all about the experience.
You going to Mull this year
I might take the trip to mull this year, and your right about the cost, it's not a case of entering an event to win on my first outing lol.
For me it would be about doing my best to enjoy the event
Jeff, lol

do the gsi. i will come over and help out if that helps
Cheers Kev, the work doesn't worry me, it the thought of it preventing me from doing something I've always wanted to do, once I use the panels on the GSI I'll have nothing to sell so it's playing on my mind a wee bit, especially when I've added up how much it's all cost so far,
Meh I'll probably worry about something different next week, lol
Build GSi to silly spec, rag it around some tarmac rally stages, done.
Allan crack on with the GSI bet you could finish it before my sport. LOL

If youd of started the GSi ages ago it'd of been done by now, so do you really want to look back in a few months/year time and still be thinking, oh if i started it then itd be done now...
Start on it tomorow or the weekend or whenever and finish it! dont buy one someone else has done, theres no pride in it, only profit.
Graeme I was going to ask dougie to paint it so I don't need to see it for a few years to save some cash lol
Mark, I'm thinking more toward hire rather than buy now as I don't have the time or budget to do many events, it's like committing to a long term relationship when I start the gsi so I'm just getting last minute nervs lol

I know, thats what I said?
Its not gonna be winning though, as a £10k engine, £12k sequential box and theres £22k already.
You can easily build a relativly competitive starter car for less then £4k. Easily.

If you need a Navigator for Mull call me done it many time's as a co-drive for 5 different drivers.
Any Driver that need's to spend £10,000 on a engine to win 1.4 class can not be a good drive.
Build the Gsi, your in too deep to bail out not, but if you do sell up can I buy a pair of opening rear window seals please? lol
I thought you probably had a few sets lol
first dibs on the courtenay turbo kit lol
in all seriousness get it started man, shouldnt look at the cost of parts lol, that will put you off straight away. you got much left to actually get or do you have everything to start?
mmm just about, you hit the point im seeing, the parts are worth alot sitting by themselves but once i use them they are worthless lollollol
graeme its only hatchback ones i have,
They'll do pm me if your willing to part with a pair

Baz, might be worth seeing if theirs enough united scotch strength to get a meet at yours to start the build, get a few regular ones on the go, and it would be built in no time, i mean thats half the point in a club, we ALL club together, no?

i thought he was still collecting parts! Nice thought Scott.
Ive said this in the project thread which is xx pages long and he's not even struck a bat.......
Start it-you will get the enthusiasm.Look at it-you will ponder, and get overwhelmed.

This.
If you ponder to long, like me, you'll just end up chucking a bucket of petrol at it & then weighting in its remains.
Well it's sat sitting there since 2003, so time and space isn't a problem,
And yeah my build thread is a bit pointless, it's just 400 odd post of a bloke stripping a nova and buying bits lol. Maybe I started it a bit early lol
There is plenty of folk offering to help me out, and when the time comes I'll be taking up their kind offers,
I think I'll phone around for concrete prices tomorrow :)

If storage/etc isnt costing you anything (garage as oppose to unit example) then do a bit here & there at your own leisure as oppose to busting a gut & getting finished for xxx time/date.
BUT, on the flip side, always remember, living childhood dreams is a big no no, they ALWAYS turn out disappointing.

So do birds you have always dreamt of bumming
Yup, I'm ****ting myself that I could use those panels and it turns out sh!t lol,
I've had the unit since 2002 and it's never seen a completed project yet lol
Maybe this one will make it,
Anyways thanks to all who replied, im pretty sure I'll start the build and forget rallying for the present time, I have a good load of mates in the bodywork business to keep me right aswell as the years I spent working in a bodyshop myself so I should be able to turn out a good job, :)
