When fitting new shells, should you lube the back of the bearings too?

nope, keep the back/rod clean and use 'graphogen' assembly lube one of the best engine building components available

Yea the back must be spotless from oil and dirt as it can upset the clearance and may cause it to spin I've only ever used a squirty oil can with normal engine oil for assembly and haven't had a problem yet but make sure to lube every thing up it's most important
