as some of you know a bought a nova saloon on ebay a couple of weeks ago, it was sold as a good runner, problem is on the way home the engine was rattling, not very loud but it was there even on low throttle in 2nd gear and got worse the more i put my foot down. this is the message i sent to the person that sold it to me.

(hi iv got a problem with the car, it sounded like it was pinking alot but it got worse to the point where i didn`t think it was going to get me home, it sounds like the either the big end bearings or the main bearings have gone. im going to investigate a bit more tomorrow.)

i think that was quite polite.

i sent them this message today afder getting no reply

(im concerned that you haven`t replied to my message about the engine problems, iv given you plenty of time to reply, if i don`t hear from you soon i will have to contact ebay with my concerns)

again polite

this is the message i got back

(hi there, the only message i have had from you was on the 24th august, you didnt request a reply, please read the email you sent me, the car was fine with no problems just the blowy exhust, pinking is 1 of 2 things 1 is labouring a car in
high gear on low reves and going slowly, or bad fuel mixture this could be caused by leaving the choke on or partially on.)

this was my reply

just so you know i im a fully qualified mechanic and mot tester, i know when a car is pinking and when its something completely different. it was doing it even on light throttle in as lower gear as 2nd. please do not think that i am stupid, and the most common course of pinking is ignition timing not being set correctly. and its burning oil, my girlfriend said it was blowing smoke every time i accelerated, which is probably why the oil level was so low.

what do we all think???

didnt you test drive the car before purchasing, when i sell a car its sold as seen and i always take them out in the car so they know whats its like

it was bought on ebay as a good runner and it wasn`t doing it straight away, it was only afder it had warmed up that i noticed it

and i thought i was pinking to start with but it got worse :(

Driveway warranty IMO.

That's the game when it comes to secondhand motors. Check what you're buying before you part with any cash.

see thats the thing with buying cars from ebay, unless you can go view it beforehand or get someone you know to look at it i dont think theres much you can do

how did you pay?

well the car came from norwich which is 105 miles away from where i live, so obviously there was no chance of a test drive before buying it, and once you have pressed that confirm bid botton and win, then you have agreed to buy that car and as far as i was concerned the car was fine when i left.

Tough luck IMO, I'm sure everyone has bought a car before and discovered at least one little thing wrong that the seller didn't mention. Theres often a good reason why people want rid of a car, its up to you to check it out properly before buying. And if you buy without checking, then sorry but thats pretty silly when you think about it. Its a flaw with buying cars off ebay, especially if you pay before collecting it. Take it as a lesson to be more selective when buying cars in future, with ebay choosing relatively local cars is the best way if possible. I've made the mistake of being too trusting when buying cars before, buying a car that the seller didn't want me to test drive myself which turned out to be a mess etc. Just be more careful next time, even the most honest people suddenly forget the truth when sellling a car!

Its buyer beware unfortunately. Sure the item may not be as described, but with something like a car, whats to say the guy just drove it like a granny and never noticed any problems? Or the buyer redlined it all the way home? Private sales rarely, if ever, come with any form of warranty so there's not a lot you can do really.

This is why I'd never buy a car off ebay, or travel over 40 miles to get one (unless I knew the seller!). Friends of mine have been burnt in the same way before.

Once you press that bid button and win you'll probably find your well within your rights not to hand any money over if the car isn't as described

As Jack says...buyer beware TBH.

Anyone that bids on a car on eBay without viewing is a fool IMO. We all know what numpties there are on there, jeez how many eBay related threads are there on here....

Sold as seen really Sam, I have had problems like this in the past. You just have to take it onb the Chin some times. It means theres another reason to fit a V6 though :)
