Right I know theres been posts on this before so keep the cocky comments and links to yourselves please as yes, I have read through them.

Basically I want to confirm the information I'm probably misinterpreting.

We have here an X16XE engine, from what I've been reading am I right in thinking that using an XEL head from an X14XE with the 1600 cams from a C or X will give better gains than a C16 due to the port design.

Any other advice welcome.

Think you are right about the head being better on the "later" engines but don't think it matters 1400 or 1600. Check the SBD website where they have a section on the heads, casting no's, etc. of the best head as regards port shape. They state that the early C type are good but the latest triangular ported heads are the best.
I don't think there is any significant difference in the cams between C/X and 1400/1600.

Ok I'll check it out.

Well we have a late x16 and it doesn't have the triangular ports.

most engine builders stick with the c or x16xe heads tbh, not actuially seen any big powered small blocks using the triangular ports as yet

Ok.

Another one, I'm sure the corsa VXR pistons go straight in, can anyone confirm this?

The XEL head is better, but its standard inlet is shi**er than the c/x16xe one.

X16XEL head is the best due to the internal shape even after port and polishing, that's taken from SBD's website.

I've also read the cams are no different but the L in XEL apparently means low output (possibly meaning power wise as it is 100 BHP which is less than the X/C16's)

P.S I have a full head from an X16XEL sat doing nothing.

Is the 16XEL the one with the triangular ports?

Which has the best inlet, the C16?

Apparently the xel head is better for air flow than the rest, what are you planning building Gunny?
I had a c16 and it seemed in standard form far far better than my mates x16l but when he put a budget air box on he got a totally different rev range on his x16xel to my Mantzeled c16xe. Tbh. I think it's also down to the cams you use and the mapping, I had apparently had reprofiled gm cams which I'm sure made a difference.

The flow of the head is essential really for what we have planned. Kent cams are in the pipeline.

Yeh I've seen that thread, that's the one.

Yes, the lower output is due to it being fitted to bigger cars than the XE (Astra Mk3, Vectra etc), the mapping and inlet etc I guess would have been designed for this reason. The XEL makes higher peak torque than the other baby XE's as standard.

A couple of you have mentioned the mapping now, guessing different models different ecu's?

XEL had x14xe cams in too

Same ECU as the X16XE, different map chip inside.
