Dervy
05-09-11, 04:24 PM
well only remembered yesturday that iv got wellers on my talbot horizon, and they`ve been sitting there doing nothing for age`s, so i thought id go grab them and put them on the nova

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture1004.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture1005.jpg

they stick out a bit, but the car isn`t low enough for it to matter and it looks awesome

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture1010.jpg

these are the wheels i bought for the car, proper bargin, borbet c`s i think with avon zv3 tyres, two of which are nearly brand new and the other two have plenty of meat on them. £36 on ebay, epic win i think, you couldn`t get one of these tyres new for that price. they will going on manda`s cesaro`s as her tyres are a bit ****.

Get those white deep 6 spokes back on IMO they look far far better ;)

Also paint is great if you can get hold of 160mm lowering springs lol

Dervy
06-09-11, 12:47 AM
im not putting the white ones on, they are worth more then the car is, no i reckon its only 120mm lol

Southie
06-09-11, 12:52 AM
lol worth more than the car, but they're the best wheels I've seen on a saloon 5 door so your right it's got to be worth £100 then lol

Jack
06-09-11, 08:01 AM
a saloon 5 door
Where is the extra door lol

scott.parker
06-09-11, 12:04 PM
I wouldn't normally say this..... but chop them springs, get the rears heated an in a vice! that ride hight has to be done! lol

Dervy
06-09-11, 01:14 PM
yea it would be good, but i cant have it that low as the front wheels stick out to far

although there is this option

scott.parker
06-09-11, 02:06 PM
Yeah get some golf arches or them universal jap style one's off ebay etc, and just apply them with some silicone sealant type glue etc, that way you can remove later etc..

Dervy
07-09-11, 10:12 PM

scott.parker
07-09-11, 10:51 PM
pmsl lol g60 arch lips ftw

Dervy
09-09-11, 06:05 PM
had another little play today, i wanted to see how low the apex shocks would go, i turns out not very low at all

i took the spring out and just let the car down on to the bump stop
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture022-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture023-1.jpg
this is standard hight well on 60mm springs
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture024.jpg

its quite low but that is sitting on the bump stop so obviously it would need to sit atleast 20mm higher so its got some suspension travel

i then chopped the bump stop down but it didn`t make much more differance

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture025.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture026-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture027-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture028-1.jpg

then chucked on a fk coilover strut to see if that was better, which it was but its sitting on the bump stops so again would still need to be about 20mm higher then this, but it looks good

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture029-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture032.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture031-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture030-1.jpg

so afder mucking around with the struts, i tried the other wheels on it

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture033.jpg
found out these borbets arn`t 4x100, they are 4x 98 which is ****.

then just cus spudly keeps on it me about it, i put the 17s on it and dropped it till the arch was sitting on top of the tyre looks mega
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture036.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture037.jpg

then afder all the fun and games i removed the rubber spring mounting ring at the top of the strut to lower it about 10mm more.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture038.jpg

Iain
09-09-11, 06:13 PM
Doesn't the rubber cup locate the spring properly on the top-mount? Assume you aren't keeping it like that?

Dervy
09-09-11, 06:20 PM
yea im going to reshape the top coil with a bit of heat, but i might not be using these struts anyway

John
09-09-11, 06:22 PM
Cut the strut tops off and re-weld them higher. (as per count vaux-a-lot's track car)

Dervy
09-09-11, 06:32 PM
yea i spose that is one of the cheaper options but how much higher can you make them?

scott.parker
09-09-11, 07:36 PM
Till they touch the bonnet under side, is cheep but not good for the resale, can you buy cheep short body coilovers..

Dervy
09-09-11, 07:49 PM
no short body coilovers are never really cheap :(

scott.parker
09-09-11, 08:02 PM
Humm, how about making a new plate/plates for the bolt on the hub carriers, so as to make the shock bolt in a lower position, would this work without fouling on anything?

Quick check, here's a pic of mine, i would say you could lower the bolt position around 15-20mm MAX before there's clearance issues on the CV boot etc.. :thumb:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6272/dscf3243k.jpg

Scott

Dervy
09-09-11, 08:13 PM
i have thought of doing this before, problem is i would have to weld brakets onto the struts which is a bit doggy because obviously you shouldn`t really get the struts hot. its possable though. im going to do a bit of reserch

scott.parker
09-09-11, 08:17 PM
Do it a bit at a time, and cool with a wet rag maybe?

I think it's worth trying with some cheap shocks just to see.

Scott

Southie
09-09-11, 08:26 PM
Scott don't you have issues with driveshafts all the time, maybe down to the coilover setup you've made.

Dervy
09-09-11, 08:29 PM
im glad you had a pic like that, i couldn`t find any. it looks doable, i think doing that and raising the strut top mount would get me about 1.5" - 2" which is more then enough i think. i think im going to have a play tomorrow and see how it looks :)

scott.parker
09-09-11, 08:29 PM
lol what? No, i killed a shaft, but then Ive had that shaft on the near side from my old car 2004? and the CV's so was bout time something went, just need new CV's now, just not enough cash to replace them.

bai1ey
09-09-11, 09:53 PM
have you seen them coilover sleeves that you weld onto your shock.
You take your lower spring cup off and weld these sleeves on. you could always see
about removing your lower spring seat and reweld it lower down.
(runs off to find a pic)

bai1ey
09-09-11, 09:59 PM
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj72/bailey_51088/images_PC070006.jpg

Please note that this kit requires the removal of the original spring pan and the kit welding to the strut - it is not a bolt-on coversion.

scott.parker
09-09-11, 10:04 PM
lol that might work essayer, better...

bai1ey
09-09-11, 10:06 PM
lol i thought that

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:09 PM
yea iv got some of them for my astra. but its not a problem with the springs on the nova, its the struts are to long, with the length of the coilovers that iv got you can only lower the car about 80mm and still have a bit of suspension travel, even if you remove the bump stops, if you go any lower then that then the struts bottom out. im hoping to go to around 120mm lower then standard but still have good suspension travel.

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:14 PM

the orange bit is the bump stop

bai1ey
09-09-11, 10:15 PM
arhhh i see there is no other way you should just sell the car to me for £100 and a mars bar plus a pack of pundland marsh mellows lool.

the idea about putting a band the the top mounts is prob the best way then.

bai1ey
09-09-11, 10:15 PM
i saw dude wasnt really thinking when i said about them sorry

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:20 PM
lol its alright mate most people dont have this problem, they just buy nice expensive sort shocks, but i have no money so im thinking of the cheap ways to get it lower

bai1ey
09-09-11, 10:24 PM
lol i am the same but would like a project. but dont really want to spend the
money buying one but i am gonna be off work for a while so i need summut.

i really cant think of a easy way to get it lower on a budget.

BRoadGhost
09-09-11, 10:28 PM
You can get the front lower than that and still have better travel if you do it properly.

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:30 PM
yea i wasn`t even planning on doing anything to this nova apart from clean it up and sell it on but you know how these things are, before you know it you start buying things and it turns into a project.

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:31 PM
define doing it properly?, cus if you mean buy short shocks, then we`ve already covered that, i have no money

karisma
09-09-11, 10:35 PM
Raising the turrets is the easiest way, its how most of the scene boys get low and still have suspension travel. There are some plates you can buy to lower the rear 80mm on standard suspension. The plate bolts onto the original stub axle bolts and then there is 4 bolts holes higher up to bolt on the stub axle. ill see if I can dig out some info on them. not sure if they're produced for any of the vauxhall range. if you know any engineers then they'll be easy to make.

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:40 PM
yea i know what you mean my brother was on about doing that on is blue saloon, but im not worried about then back end cus thats easy compered to the front.

bai1ey
09-09-11, 10:42 PM
10mm plate a drill, a tape and alot of time should see the plates your on about made

Dervy
09-09-11, 10:44 PM
yea but its cheap cus i haven`t really got to buy anthing, iv already got nice think plate i could use, so thats not a problem

Southie
09-09-11, 10:44 PM
Sorry Scott I remembered incorrectly, I drive a Ford now so a little bit weaker lol

scott.parker
09-09-11, 10:55 PM
Humm, could you use the plate idea, but not weld them on, maybe, drill a new hole between the two on the shock, then as long as the distance is right you might get a new hole in the metal above the top hole on the shock, meaning you could bolt it to it with the bolt holes, no welding..

hope that makes sense?

Scott

bai1ey
09-09-11, 10:57 PM
i think i understand scott you on about the front insted of moving the hub mount use a plate to lower it like on the rear ?

bloke who had them before, had these plates made up and drilled 4x108mm holes for his escort

i drilled the new holes to fit the nova

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture045.jpg

im going to have the plates machined down a bit though because thay are 20mm thick, which is to much for the bolts to go through.

instantly thought of the fk top spring cups, but been mentioned already. I would look into a way of getting the piston of the shock further through the turret.

The rear is fairly easy, 60 or 80 springs and raise the stub axels.

bai1ey
13-09-11, 12:34 AM
are you still gonna put a band in the turret dervy aswell as the cups? and the bottom plate mod?

Dervy
13-09-11, 12:50 AM
yea bailey i think i am but i need to see how much travel iv gained with the fk raised top cups and the modded bottom mounting bracket :), it doesn`t need to go as low with the 15" on aswell but its still guna be bloody low :)

Dervy
14-09-11, 12:13 AM
ok had a little play again today and im a bit sad as iv decided that the 15" wellers stick out to far. i can get jdm style arch extensions that will cover them but i think its just going to look a bit silly :(

even though they do look f`ing sweet from the side

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture069-3.jpg

thsi is how far they stick out, its 80mm from the lip of the arch

from the front

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture066-1.jpg

and what it would look like with the 95mm arch extensions

Im so glad you have come to this decision!! Those wheels are fine, (look a bit land rover ish) but in that width/offset just look crap on a nova. I quite like the original alloys you bought (could you not get wobbly bolts? its only 2mm pcd difference.

Dervy
14-09-11, 02:08 AM
what the borbets? yea i do like the way they look on it, its a bit of a pain having to use wobbly bolts, means i would need to buy a set.

LEWI007
14-09-11, 08:24 AM
Put arch extensions on and keep those wheels mate it will look EPIC.

Ive got a photo of a saloon with widearch extensions and deep dish wheels i can upload if you want a look

bai1ey
14-09-11, 11:05 AM
dervy i am also happy you arnt gonna use the second set of wellers i think a set of deep'ish wheels that the oem arch will strecth over

Did you sell Amada's SR steels? if not you could band them?? then get the arch extension too.. I'm sure you and Luke could have a go at banding them your self to keep cost's down?

one step forward two steps back, but never mind

came up with another idea for getting more travel from the shocks, i made i new top mount that gets rid of the big rubber bit.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture074.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture075.jpg

as you can see it gives about 30mm more travel.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture076.jpg

i then set about getting the new lock rings on, which ment i had to remove the top cap which of corse was seized on
i had to slice it to loosen it of

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture078.jpg

i then found out that the new lock rings that i bought dont fit :( they look to be about 2mm smaller then my 52mm coilovers

no not yet, iv been working on my astra for its mot, i should have an update on the nova next week

Dervy

well afder spending last week sorting the astra out for its mot, iv been able to do a bit more to the nova today.

being skint and not being able to find the right size spring mount lock rings for my coilover, i made my own
started with this big lump of 66 nylon
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture-3.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture020-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture029-2.jpg

this is the coilover all built up with mk3 astra top mount
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture030-2.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture032-2.jpg

i had to make the hole in the strut top mount bigger to fit the astra strut top
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture031-2.jpg

this is how its sitting at the minute
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture036-1.jpg

it looks like its got around 3 and a half inch`s of travel which i think is plenty
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture035.jpg

i couldn`t be arsed to do the other side but i did sort out the hole in the backbox, i fitted the powerflow silencer that used to be on the astra.
it sounds great, i did do a video but the sound quality is crap on my camera, so theres not much point putting it on here.

oooft thats stupid money!! What thread size/pitch and seat diamater are they? (i had a crazy saga getting ones for my mk4 astra's bilsteins, after loads of phonecalls, emailing them photos, exact dimensions, and about 9 months i ended up going to there hq in england on the way to billing, and got it sorted within 5 mins!!)

Dervy

they are fk coilovers which are 54mm x 1.5 which is not a common size most others coilovers are 57mm.

Do those astra top mounts make much difference? To overall height?

Dervy
30-09-11, 11:56 PM
yea its giving it about 30mm extra drop or shock travel, so its well worth doing.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture058.jpg

this is how it sitting now, still pretty low

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture059-1.jpg

this will be going up for sale soon so if your interested let me know, it won`t have they coilovers on it but it will have a full 60mm apex suppension kit on it, the weller wheels won`t be included eather, will probs be on standard wheels but im keeping my eye out for some cheap alloys to go on it.
