View Full Version : performance figures
Is there a thread with all the performance figures, bhp, torque, 0-60 etc of all the different Nova models, i.e. from 1.0-1.6i including sport model derivitives too?
it will open a huge can of worms........
oops,
I just thought the "official" ones would be interesting.
well, as it is well known that the 1.2 is the nippiest of all, the rest will be disappointing.....
you own a 1.2 then?
nope,
i'll try to find some proper performance figures..
the trouble is that a 1.2 with 16"s & a digidash is capable of 130+mph & does 60 in about 8 seconds......[tongue in cheek]
I have 2 1.2s, the carb will do it in just over 11 (lightning speed) and the 1.2i wont reach 60 full stop!
I should fit a spoiler to help it........ the wieght will make it faster with the wheels etc you mentioned above.
No, seriously, just thought it wuld be interesting for the original vauxhall figures to appear, if you do get them, perhaps you or I can bung them in a chart here for anyone else who is interested but, perhaps other people have a life?

My 1.2i did a whopping 90mph eventually.
GSI went passed the end of the indicated speeds on the dials, ( so probably about 110 lol ) then promptly shlte itself a few days later and hasn't seen active duty since!
1.2i max speed was 96, I remember that much from an old brochure I have buried somewhere in all my uni stuff, 0-60 was around 3 days iirc.
I had a mini with the oval dial that stops at 90, then you get the fuelk gauge. It had a 1275 engine, I drove flat out over a long straight road, got half way back into fuel gauge, who knows what that was but. i put some brown in my pants with the lack of stability with my 145 tyres.
cobblers... 50 hp won't make it past 90mph....
This is according to Vauxhalls figures! and you mean 45 lol
i had a 1.0 at 100mph once when i was young. i remember 90 to 100 took forever............we were probably going downhill
downhill???? a vertical drop from a plane wouldn't get a 1.0 to a ton
downhill???? a vertical drop from a plane wouldn't get a 1.0 to a ton
you just need a thousand miles of road and a good backwind................
my 1.3 got a smidge over a ton when my mate drove it back from drapers...due to the accuracy of speedo needles and since it is still here im guessing it wasnt over 88mph
The best speedo needles are the austin ones that move as you go over bumps, your speed is always "about" because it is always moving 5 mph each way. I wonder if the police would take that into consideration...?
1.5td will hit the Governer in top gear. which is indicated at around 120-125mph but I would guess thats about 110 at the most :)

hate to ruin your night mike but my 1.2 carb is pushing a staggering 48 hp... I can get it to just over a ton... Never again though...
your carb one should be pushing 55hp?
Never tried my 1.2 i for speed but it is the slowest nova i have ever owned, my injection mini accelerates fine then just refuses to accelerate past 94 mph, all of a sudden refuses to acceletare further
I did post a list of manufacturer power/torque figures a while back, can't remember what thread though lol
something like this
gte & sport 9 seconds
1.4 11 seconds
1.3 12 seconds
1.2 14 seconds
1.0 several weeks
1.5d rarely
1.5td 10 seconds
ish
That will do nicely!
Seriously though, if you do find it, would be interesting thanks.

straight after i passed my driving test, june 86, i borrowed my grans 1.2 3dr merit (it eventually became my first nova) & headed for the biggest hill in the area, i managed 100 on the clock... it was probably about 88-90mph.. it would indicate 90 on the level, which was low to mid 80's....
look at it like this..
to get a car weighing about a ton (include passengers)
you need about 75hp
then 120 100hp
140 150hp
155 200hp
overall speed is all about hp, and total weight isn't that important..... but for acceleration, weight is the most important thing..
so does that mean if 75bhp reaches 100mph, then 45 bhp (1.0 and 1.2i) should only reach approx 65 mph?
no, 1.0 will do low 80's at most.
its the law of diminishing returns... to get a proper 200mph you need about 600 hp.
then 250 is about 900hp.
thank god that 80's gm speedos were more optimistic than government growth figures
Yes, I was just being awkward!
On another note, what does the little bookmark thing mean that sits in just a few posts when they are listed?
just run your cursor over it & all will be revealed
Re 1.0 novas and 80 mph, I did drive my first car 1.0 at 80 mph on almost every road when I was young. I knew it was officially 80 when the police told me that I had indeed been doing 80mph+
Funnily enough I soon stopped driving it and every other car at that speed.
dont forget, drag coefficient and gear ratio's also play a big role. a nova has the dynamic properties of a house brick being pulled through treacle. (the mk1 is slightly more aerodynamic due to the thin layer of awesome on it)

Might add top speeds in a bit
Thanks for that, I am so glad this thread has remained light hearted so far......no one has gotten upset

right well there is deffinatly something wrong with my speedo then... i have got my 1.2 moor door over 110 on the clocks, it may take a day or two but it deffiantly is lieing to me :'(
best way to measure speed is using your rev counter (assuming its correct!) and calculate with final ratio.
perhaps the extra doors make it faster?

it doesnt even have a rev counter :/ and somethings happening :L

tbf, it's 23 years old and done 105k... I'm surprised it isn't dead let alone reaching over a ton on a very odd occasion!!! lollol
Apparently...
1.2 carb 94mph
1.2 SPi 89mph
1.3 101mph
1.3 SR 103mph
1.4i SPi 96mph
1.4i MPi 109mph
1.5 Diesel 94mph
1.5 TD 103mph
1.6i 117mph
No info on 1.4 carb or 1.0; I would hazard a guess the 1.4 carb being around the same as the 1.3 and the 1.0 probably about 85-90.
