It's smaller than a DSLR but still has changeable lens' and is relatively idiot proof, if photobucket would stop being gay I'd post up a pic or 3

Depends on what what you want to do tbh. Basic stuff is easy peasy, then things get gradually harder. my biggest problem i haven't read read the book, and what little i did, just wouldn't sink in!

Sit with the cam in your lap as you read, then you can try it as you read. I did. Sat with the car in a field and played while i read..

To meeee and I LOVE it. lol I have a Sony A100, a random Fujifilm one and an Olympus film camera :) Photography is something well worth getting in too. It started as a hobby for me but i'll be off to study it at college as from next month to try and take it that bit further.

450d here - good camera but not really up to what I want it to do these days. Need to upgrade, but DSLRs have almost doubled in price the last few years lol

Lenses include the 18-55mm kit, 55-250mm Canon IS and 70-300mm Sigma. And a hama tripod which is ace. Need wireless flash next.

Started out with an AE-1 and AV-1, and an old Pentax, so went straight to manual on the DSLR - the auto is Ok but doesn't always get the pic I'm trying to take.

And a random or 2
note the different areas of focus in this one

And used a cheap fisheye lens here

Well seeing as there is a topic and lots of the camera users have replayed ill post this here, Carrie is looking to get a DSLR, we went into Jessops to get a hands on look as some the other day, she was looking at this on the internet Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/LUMIX+Digital+Cameras/LUMIX+G+Compact+System+Cameras/DMC-GF2/Overview/6491444/index.html?view=angle&angle=4

They have it in Jessops for £399 from £675, but to be honest we both were/are not sure what to look for in these type of cameras etc, so i thought you guys might be able to help us out, basically £400 is the budget, DSLR or similar spec is what were looking at, so please advise us..

Scott

The lumix G is not a DSLR as it does not have a mirrored view finder therefore it is smaller in size, they call it micro four thirds, the lens range isn't massive with only about 6 panasnonic lens to choose from, mine came with the 14-42 lens which is ideal at home or a party and great for billing etc but I find it a bit short if your at a trackday so I'll get the 100-300 lens for that sort of picture.

To be perfectly honest most folk do the usual and buy a camera for it's " pub spec " and rarely use it to it's full potential, my G2 is maxed out at 12 megapixel but to be honest I only ever use it at 3 Meg as if you were at billing and took hundreds of 12 Meg pics it would take ages to upload to photobucket etc.

I find the G2 very easy to use, easy to understand and as you can see in the pics I posted earlier it's standard 14-42 lens is more than good enough for me.

Forgot to add it comes with extra free pervy lens the one we looked at here. http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/80053/show.html

The extra lens is the 14-42 which I have described above mate, it's not got massive zoom on it for outdoor stuff but still good for close up and indoors it's great,

So would this be a better buy you think?

Certainly a better lens as standard and a good price IMO but a much larger camera to hold and use,

Ideally think of what your going to use it for rather than what features each camera has,

The GF2 has a tiny body and with the fixed 14 lens it's not to long in the nose so great to put in the wife's bag if at a party etc but simply change the lens and you've got a great camera for likes of a football match a btcc race etc but still very compact,

The full size of a DSLR put me off a cannon 550d I didn't want something that big but still wanted a good size touch screen and changeable lens,

Also Scott look up the prices for different lens's for each camera you look at, cos if you choose to upgrade that's where all the cost is, some lens's can cost wayyyyyy more than the actuall camera body,

IMO go to a currys/pc world and see the size and weight of a few cameras then find the best deal online,

I prefer to take on the largest possible resolution/quality the camera can manage, then review all my pics and duplicate/resize those I'm uploading. That way I've still got good size originals to print if I want to.

I accidentally set my camera to a small size pic when I first got it, I now have a folder with pics I wish were bigger lol

I'm not making this out to mean bigger mpx = a better pic btw; pick a camera on its image quality merits, then use the best possible size/quality for that camera. So don't pick a 14mpx cam over a 12mpx cam purely thinking that more mpx = better image

Scott, you need to think about what you want the camera to do. Will you be using HDR? Will you be doing long exposures? Will you be doing night shots? Will you be doing long range photography? Do you want the ability to use multiple flashes? Do you just want a point/shoot thing?

bazil

Valid point jack, usually cars shows etc are smaller size for me unless I know somebody wants pictures printed, it's easily changed in the camera though,

Benn

Should always take pics in the biggest and best sizes you can. You get a greater quality photo that way.

Em it's just a setting lol, there are 6 different settings on the colour mode and if none of them suit you can make your own, it's ideal when you want vivid colouring in a picture, I can't wait to see what autumn and winter pics will be like,

I was looking at new Nikon D3100s in Jessops but found them a bit less user friendly than the equivalent Canons, so i bought myself a secondhand 40D with a 17-85 4-5.6 USM IS lens, bag and spare cards etc for £460. That's a lot of camera for £460 compared to the D3100 which is a bit of a toy by comparison. If you go for these higher level cameras, they tend to focus quicker, be faster (6.5 frames per second) have better build quality (magnesium alloy body on mine), better weather sealing and a nice little top plate which saves you battery! It only has 10.1mp but with a decent lens (which almost all DSLR lenses are, they'll certainly be better than anything on most compacts/bridge cameras) you'll be able to still print to A2. I'd buy a full size (not 'full frame' though!) DSLR if you can from either Canon or Nikon - there is so much compatible stuff out there for them and so much secondhand stuff available that you may as well stick to one of these systems. If you find you buy a lens which you don't like, you'll be able to sell it on too as lenes don't depreciate that badly.
