When I enter my registration number on the Black Circles website it tells me that my tyre size should be 185/60 R14. However, my car currently has 175/65 R14 tyres fitted to the steel wheels.

Main question is, what should they be (or rather what were they from the factory) as standard? Second question would then be, what is the best size to go for from a performance and/or looks perspective?

Any pictures of tyres on wheels would be interesting too, assuming there's a noticeable difference. The alloys I have are 5J wide. I've not checked what the width of the steelies are.

the stock tyre size for the gte was 175/65r14. and that was on 5j 14 rims, both steel or ally. the 185/60 fits fine & is usually cheaper.

Thanks. I just tried a search with the 185 width tyres and right enough they are cheaper. Presumably the visual difference from using 175 tyres is subtle if at all noticeable.

Hi Royston, a picture would be great if you get a chance. No rush though. Still reading up on various tyre reviews to narrow down my selection. Toyos get a good write up as do the Hancooks.

you won't notice the difference, as long as you don't mix sizes on an axle.

I am planning to fit 185/60/14 Goodyear NCT 2's I have on my SR/GTE/GSi rims

There is a better choice of 185/60/14 over 175/65/14 brand wise and there are also cheaper as you have seen

That's great - thanks for the pictures and advice guys. Looks like there's no harm in straying from the original specification to allow for a wider choice of tyres.

on a 14", 185/60 is pretty much as far as you need to go. it doesn't affect the overall gearing enough to worry either.
