Just converted my nova to a 1.6 16v and about 2 days later the speedo stopped working, took the cable off to find the end of the cable that goes into the speedo drive at the gearbox end had snapped off and shreaded itself, so 1 new speedo drive and cable later was all sorted, another day and a half passed and its done it again, anybody got any suggestions on what to do ? any help greatly appreciated, Phil.

Is the cable routed so it's flowing with no sharp turns.

Yes no sharp turns or bends in it.

remove the inner cable from the outer, cover in grease, then put it together. For somereason when you buy new ones they don'e have grease in them, with spinning round and no lubricant, they snap. Hpefully you'll get 10+ years from the next one rather than a day!

If the layout of the cable is not the best, drive a little bit at slow speeds at first to help it settle.

Hope this helps

I had the exact same problem when I converted base spec clocks to SR ones.

That tiny difference in length for something mechanically driven will snap it every time, you have to change it to the correct one.

i have changed clocks form standard to sr etc, never had issues re length. The differnet clocks mean the cable goes to a different bit under dash, just ensure it is all clear and not under strain? Shouldn't need a different cable, I think even new, they are the same one. Even the first Corsa Bs used the same cable (handy to get spares from scrappy!)

It is the grease. I work with old minis too and every type of cable has to be seperated, greased and put back together. I had broken a few cables myself before I was told to grease them. I have never checked haynes actually to see what he says...

btw david fox, awesome escort, very rare on the roads these days, good job.

Well the clocks arent the best anyways, the trip stopped working a while back and the backing had a few issues not signal lights not working, so i was going to replace the clocks soonish anyway, cheers for all the comments guys.
