Had a 205GTi many years ago, awsome fun cars but i found the 309GTIs handled better. One of the 2 cars i regret selling tbh

Adam

For the age of the car the interior is nice IMO!

i was always told to got for the 1.6 as there isnt a huge power difference tween the two...not for the insurance difference

Andy
31-07-11, 09:26 PM
well the day started with me travelling down to my mates to help relieve a metro of its ever increasing in value 1275 A series engine.
Lending engine hoists out to people means fun is to be had with stihl saws and forklifts at 7.30am LOL
Spud turned up to see this and brought us refreshments......lol

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll211/andyspics_album/andygti009.jpg

After fun and games with the metro and various impromptu madness dancing/singing we went to buy the peugeot.
Then got it home and gave it a quick rinse and took a small number of pics as i was busy getting trashed after that.
Its really clean and tidy and came with a folder full of history and receipts, just needs a bottom end and a bit of tidying up etc.
Pics are muck as theyre off my phone and im no spud- i dont climb telegraph poles etc to get good shots lol

Hahaha its only a 5 minute job lol honest!

Just remember, the belt cover bolts, some will be 11 & some 13 (IIRC? Could be 10 & 11's actually?).

Andy

Taking the engine out is actually probably the easiest maintenance job on the car lol

i was always told to got for the 1.6 as there isnt a huge power difference tween the two...not for the insurance difference this must have been from someone who had never driven a 1.9..... the hp might not be much more, but the torque is way more......

my brother had a 1.9 back in the early 90's, and some pub expert was banging on about them being skitty & dangerous at the limit, so as i was the designated driver, i was instructed to take this expert out in it to show him the limit......there is great satisfaction in making a man cry. they are a true classic, and nobody ever made a body kit or alloy that improved the factory look. its also a great pity that vw made some very special golf gti 16v's for the production saloon championships that were about in those days, so the record books always showed the golf as the winner....because on the road, the 205 won all day long.

Andy
31-07-11, 10:49 PM
I love pub talkers lol Sounds like you totally embarassed him then..
Like i was on about the other day mowgli about the heroes who skim camboxes for increased valve lift......lol

Edd
31-07-11, 10:58 PM
Crack a project thread up mate, I sometimes have blinkers on but like retro stuff like 205's and escorts even tho I have no interest in owning one

Sure others feel the same

Bubba
31-07-11, 11:12 PM
this must have been from someone who had never driven a 1.9..... the hp might not be much more, but the torque is way more......

it was actually from someone who had a 1.9 lol. bearing in mind this was advice for me when i was 19.

he then put an mi16 in it on twin carbs :)

mowgli
31-07-11, 11:22 PM
well, he was either a crap driver, or his 1.9 was crap, or he'd bought a 1.6 that was badged up as a 1.9..... these things happen.... i knew a bloke once who was absolutely convinced he owned an early quattro, and i tried to convince him it was a 100 coupe... this didn't go too well until i asked him to show me the back diff.. there wasn't one..he never spoke to me again

the performance difference between the 1.6 & 1.9 is staggering. for a simple crank & rods swap, the engine has way more grunt. maybe there was a later version that was stifled by emissions crap... i dunno

mowgli

Like i was on about the other day mowgli about the heroes who skim camboxes for increased valve lift......lol

i did a thread a while back about pub bull s hitters...& their amazing facts.... but it seems to have disappeared since the upgrade.

have fun with this car... on the open country roads in your area, it will be fantastic.

to fit the mi16, the easiest way is to try & find a bonnet off a 205 automatic. they are taller...

I had a 1.8 straight diesel van, was a cracking little thing! BUT the electrics just fell apart! lol
And a guy i know was gutted to realise that his koni set up he had bought was not as stiff as my van, he swapped it for the van torsion bar set up and lowered it, said it was way better, so theirs a mod to keep in mind mate, i wouldn't mind owning a 1.9 just to know what there like, but not for a long term thing, as i have a habit of killing French cars easaly..
The van met its end with a Tbone from a Transit.

Aye get a WIP thread Andy. Love these. I had a 1.9....awesome car. Would love another.

mowgli
01-08-11, 08:03 PM

mowgli
01-08-11, 08:14 PM
but with the cambox skimmed they proper beat them innit

Andy
01-08-11, 08:38 PM
lol lol
The cambox skimming thing is the oldest bhp improving myth ever i think,in fact its as gay as the "powerbands in every gear m8" when speaking about a scrambler/motocross bike
i shall go take a pic of the hole in the block purely for monday nights sh1ts and giggles lol

mowgli
01-08-11, 08:40 PM
thankyou... remember to pm it to lee, he likes block holes....

MK999
01-08-11, 08:42 PM
You mean he likes it when your rod goes right through the other side.

mowgli
01-08-11, 08:47 PM
he's quite partial to a banging from the rear end & a panhard rod......

MK999

Make sure you look up the small hole filling technique!

Wire ties and a 6mm drill bit will fix that. Proper scene whore style.

seriously, i've seen worse block damage than that repaired by block stitching... by god that is a noisy game....
Is that like metal spraying? i did that on work experience at a motor engineering placement by christ that was loud

mowgli
01-08-11, 09:15 PM
they get the bits & put them into place. then they use a large drill & force loads of self tapping grub screws into the gaps, then if that wasn't noisy enough, they use a jackhammer type thing to smooth the surface down so it looks like a casting.... i believe it was invented for ship engine repairs. i saw it used on big diesels. it was actually very effective.

i was 60 yds away from it, protected by 2 walls & still couldn't hear a phone ringing...

Southie
01-08-11, 09:34 PM
Sorry if I've missed it but what the hell happened to the poor engine?

12 years ago my mate sent his 205 to ecosse for a Mi16 conversion on his old Miami blue 205, it cost him about 4k, some ballsack side swipped him only a week after him owning it, luckily it was full legit and he got a 6k payout.

I still want a 1.9 GTI in my life, always love those even though there very tinny and French lol

Andy
01-08-11, 09:40 PM
I bought it like that southie,as a project

To be fair, this is a vauxhall site. I wouldn't expect much interest if I put pics of my nova on a 205 forum.

car looks tidy by the way, will be a nice little project.

Andy
08-08-11, 09:39 PM
Today some work was done on the 205,normally as many will agree, this is a complete ar.se about face of tackling a project that needs a new bottom end!!
But,my mrs was hiring one of those rug doctor cleaners to do 2 carpets,so we did the cars aswell while it was here-Astra was done, nowt to see there lol
The 205 came up brilliant,im well chuffed with the results.....

Thanks mate, ive had a Dreg Mk2 XR2 years ago-was good but theyre so dear now-i paid £100 for it,seller reckoned the head gasket had gone as it stopped blowing hot air and it was missing. The water pipe had burst blowing water onto the dizzy! Been busy with this lately-sourced a replacement engine for a bargain £31!!!

Then i got it into my garage to set about pulling the engine out,i have no engine hoist and no help round here if im honest,so everything was done with a trolley jack http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

The apparent damage...

Took the crank out and down to the engine builders yesterday to be measured-pleased to report its in very good condition and still standard size,so just got polished for me.They were also kind enough to crack the crank bolt off for me as i dont have an impact gun.

Good work pal, and well done on the bargain engine :thumb:

Andy
15-10-11, 12:25 PM
Indeed, they must have just tapped the hole in the block as the thread for the head bolts is only the last 3rd of the hole and is M10 whereas the hole is bigger.
The nut on it was 22mm!!! and only hand tight-total waste of time really!

Edit-Thanks Rich:thumb:

Could someone move this to projects now for me please?

mowgli
15-10-11, 12:31 PM
that'll be m14 threaded rod.. has a tensile strength of about 3, as opposed to a head bolt of about 12.9. considering what a helicoil costs, thats ropey. at least it will fix up ok though.

Looks great Andy! Gotta love these things. Nice one on the bargain engine and removal method. I'm gonna do that this afternoon.

The car is about 3' off the deck on stands. This can only end well. lol Oh aye, amazing job on the carpets!

Andy
15-10-11, 12:35 PM
I bet that atrocity cost more to do than a helicoil,an m14 threaded rod plus a tap for it cant have been cheap.
Stuff like that just really winds me up,its more involved to gyppo it and they have still done it!

I once had a white 205 cti cabby, slammed with 405 mi16 wheels on and a few other bits, was only a 1.6 but went like hell! it did blow up in the end when we were fours up doing a burnout down a country lane with the roof down, it managed first into second on the spot, but the rod left the block trying to get it into third lol.

I have been cracking on with this since the last update, just havent had time to update the thread.
Anyway,i scrapped the block with the marine bolt in it (lol) and bought another bottom end off a member on 205gti drivers forum which was in Harrogate.
This block was 1000x better than that other one.So stripped it down and painted it red and the sump black because im a bummer like that.

While doing this i ordered my main and big end bearings from the engineers, also got the piston rings aswell while i was there.Plastigauge came from ebay to measure the tolerances.

Whats your plans for this anyway Andy? A mint keeper or sell in a billion years time for twenty hundred gazillion Skynet $'z?
Its a good question which if im honest i dont know the answer to if that makes sense?!
I keep asking myself why the hell im not mi or gti6 ing the bugger but i want to keep it original,i just want a reasonably quick car that is good in standard form.
Example, unless you buy a gsi,all novas need wheels, suspension, bumpers, seats, engine, the lot changing!
What i like about these are that theyre good straight out the box, they look good, they go well, and they dont need radically improving to be good like novvers, hell the anti roll bar on them comes with polybushes as STANDARD on them. They thought of everything when they made them imo.
So i'll enjoy it next year and see where i go from there really, sorry for the essay lol

Andy

Well in between ridiculous amounts of food and alcohol, and generally clowning around, ive been doing a bit at this.
Been flatting down for what seems like eternity, priming etc.
Anyway,i stoneguarded the front panel for extra protection and seam sealed the vulnerable areas

Andy
28-12-11, 06:05 PM
Almost had a fail of the highest order.
I was saved by the fact i am a total retard for once.
Picked up the bottom end gasket set, then called in to halfords for the paint.
Got home, warmed it up and then mixed for a good 5mins.
Thought id be a mong and write my name on the cupboard door.Spraying,spraying...........no colour...............still no colour............fukk me its just thinners with no colour.
Unbelievable.Been back and sh1t them up by spraying their counter lol Refunded as no cherry left.Oh well,in hull tomorrow so one of their branches is bound to have some.

MK999
28-12-11, 06:12 PM
The "no cherry left" thing may well be to get rid of you... Halfords are in the middle of a patent rights argument between the suppliers that make the spray tops for the Holts mixed cans, and also supply the paint and the company that invented them/leases them out on franchise as I understand it. As a result most halfords have just shut their paint mixing stuff down and tell you they're out of colours, don't mix on a weekend, the machines are broken etc etc.

Any 'A1' Motor spares place use similar kit and are buying from the original suppliers/inventors still though. Obviously not ideal if you've already had stuff mixed with halfords though :/

Andy
28-12-11, 06:18 PM
I always check myself on the sheves and in the big drawer below the shelves and there wasnt any at all.
I once went in to get some mixed up for my old nova and "the guy who does it,wasnt in"
WTF?! only 1 person can mix the paint??!!!
Incidentally the paint mixing bit has gone as you say.

MK999
28-12-11, 06:22 PM
Didn't realise you were using cans off the shelf, the Holts cans are way way better, coverage is like night and day and they produce a proper spray pattern like a gun too, takes a little getting used to but it is a lot easier to use when you do.

That always made me laugh as well, I have nearly said at times ffs I'll do it then lol Only one of you can actually count to use a set of scales?

Andy
28-12-11, 06:25 PM
Yeah the cans off the shelf,i dont find them bad really, just small and expensive.Ive started it in halfords so i'll have to finish it in that now,im fukked if im flatting it all down again !!lol

I know its bloody ridiculous-"We mix/match your cars colour"-translates to-"only one person here has the ability to do something, the rest of us just sell fuses and bulbs" lol

MK999
28-12-11, 06:27 PM
I wouldn't really say they matched anything lol Only ever use them for small bits that aren't next to anything in the same colour

Andy
12-01-12, 10:09 PM
With the Bay now finished, and looking very well for cans if i do say so myself,i begun the soul destroying monotony that is cleaning pistons and all the other related bollox to rebuild the bottom end.
My honing tool turned up yesterday, and toady was gale force winds so too dangerous to work-took the day off.
Started at 10am and just packed up now.
I had 14 liners and ONLY 4 were usable lol The kids can have the other 10 to play 10bore bowling LOL
Anyway, all honed, and everythiong cleaned in a way that can only be described as obsessive and displaying underlying mental health issues lol
I took all the bits, block and new rebuild parts into my conservatory and set up a work area.Im not in trouble either, which is good lol
Enough jibber jabber, heres what was achieved tonight, didnt take any pics today as i was blathered in oil and petrol.

Thanks Spud,if i have the time i'll certainly lend a hand.

Good clean looking shell, espically for a Ph.1 :thumb:

What condition is the rear beam in, any camber on the rear wheels or are you one of the lucky ones? lol

Have a 1.6, the later 115bhp version myself (Ph2. Miami), but stripped it out and going down the 309 running gear route. Not sure what engine I'm going for yet - will decide once the current one goes bang if I ever get it fininshed.

Andy
13-01-12, 07:51 PM
Not had a look at the rear beam in all honesty, but no there doesnt look to be any issues.should be ok as it was MOT'd,did 200 miles then went off the road when the engine blew.
I thought the type i had was a phase 1.5?? as its one of those with both 1 and 2 parts?? or am i wrong??

Yeah thats me,ahh i knew i recognised the username,im on that many forums i couldnt remember where from.
Yeah, they basically shot down in flames the idea of doing it yourself,i spoke to somebody about their claims and they just said it would be fine to hone myself.
Saying that the only answer was to blow hundreds of £££ on new liners, well you saw it anyway.

Most people decide to give it to the pro's with their chequebook and forget about it at that point though, learning to do it all yourself is a notch further :d

Book I found really useful when I started at the engine builders: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Racing-Engine-Builders-Handbook-Monroe/dp/1557884927 Nice cheap one too lol It's american so it's all about V8's and pushrods, and it's for race engines so it gets really in depth, detailed, and beyond anal tbh... but the general gist of it and the procedures for measuring things, making sure they run correctly etc etc are all valid if you're stuck for a read. Also worth reading for the odd mentalist little details they add to an engine, like die grinding all the casting marks off of the inside of the block and polishing so dirt doesn't build up inside the crankcase!

The head has been skimmed before i reckon as its valves are stamped with numbers,i dont suppose you know how thick theyre meant to be do you?? Might be brave and ask on drivers lol

MK999
15-01-12, 07:17 PM
Do the valves protrude the headface? There's no reason to stamp them unless they're coming out, so if they don't need to come out for a skim it's possible it's a refurbed head, which would be nice to find.

Cameron on drivers helped me work it out to be 9:8.1 which is standard?! i just saw a previous post from you in here that said standard CC was 34 and mine are now 32,so how its still standard i dont know! lol
I get the same:
A Bore 83.00mm
B Stroke 73.00mm
C Piston Area 54.11cm2 [(3.142 x ((A / 10)*(A / 10))) / 4]
D Swept Volume 395.03cm3 [C x (D / 10)]
E Piston Volume 5.00cm3
F Gasket Depth 1.50mm
G Gasket Volume 8.12cm3 [C x (F / 10)]
H Combustion Chamber 32.00cm3
I Total Volume 440.14 cm3 [D + E + G + H]
J Compressed Volume 45.12cm3 [E + G + H]
Compression Ratio 9.76:1 [I / J]
:tard:

XU5J-180A & XU5JA-B6D are both 9.8:1, the XU5JA/K-B6E is 9.25:1 - Could you have a B6E and with all the skimming and work it just happens to be 9.8 now? - I think there should be a stamp on the block, but not sure where.

Andy
23-03-12, 10:44 PM
Thats exactly what he got it to also.
Yeah its B6E.Both The engines i used for parts were B6E and so was the original engine, even though i have used nowt off it.
Im guessing the pistons were different in them?

LiquidPug
23-03-12, 11:16 PM
Thats exactly what he got it to also.
Im guessing the pistons were different in them?
Must be as the bore / stroke of the cylinder is common between the three. Not 100% sure, but think the B6E is the catalyst engine so might be lower comp as standard - might be the piston crowns?

Andy
24-03-12, 08:31 AM
No 1.6's had a catalyst from what the info on drivers says, only the later 1.9 fell foul of that, its gotta be the piston crowns. The other pistons are obviously less dished
Im just glad both the engines i used for bits were b6e as that wouldnt have run well with different cc'd pistons? I honestly didnt think there was a difference.

Done some more over the past couple of days.
Had Monday off and spent almost all day shimming the head up,what a crap job that is,i absolutely loved slicing my hands to ribbons on my feeler gauges. Also went and collected the new watter pump, thermostat, cambelt and tensioner.
This afternoon i fitted the head to the bottom end i built a while back, fitted the new water pump and cambelt kit, painted the gearbox and thermostat housing and had a good tidy up.

Yes mate it will be,i was just talking to a friend who is round about it just now.I knew it needed doing,it was just easier to go over it than mask it at the time.
As i always say "any help or advice is always appreciated"

Rusted bolts, rotten water pipe - surely not! :p

I think 90% of the bolts I've removed so far have been rusted to funk and have needed drilling out after they finally snap. I've had the front water pipe bolt out while removing the bumper bracket/wing support thing with no problem, guess the rear one will snap and require drilling out with my luck! lol

Had the day off due to rain today so did some this aft.
Cleaned up oil filter mating face and fitted the oil filter, glad its black as it kind of carries off what im already doing.
Also dragged the engine loom through and cleaned all that up.
Then prepped and primered the alt bracket, the clutch cable bracket and the clutch cable arm thing,no pics as theres no light in the shed, plus theyre only in primer.
Also cleaned the inlet manifold and painted that, also in the dark shed.

Im glad people have mentioned the starter, been getting worked up over that and the throttle body, which is worse tbh as that obviously bolts to the inlet manifold which is painted.
My worry is that if i strip the TB down to pain i will disturb the TPS,now i dont honestly know if it works or if its set up correctly lol Sod it,starter is coming off for paint lol
Top mounts will be painted black when i remove them to fit some lowering springs Mike..
Mowgli-lol it has moved honest,it went onto the drive for engine fitting then straight back in lol
LiquidPug-no i havent seen that, will have a look in a sec although that will be something to consider later due to just getting going......hopefully!!!!!

Also put some brackets in primer ready to paint tomorrow, still a bit undecided as to whether or not to paint the starter as i have now learnt smaller, lighter more powerful starter motors fit from newer Peugeots,so one of those could be going on instead.

Its Halfords Aluminium. Not a car match, just on the specials bit with the enamels and engine paints etc.Paints and covers well.

Yeah, although it will be a few weeks as everything needs tidying as its all put together rough just to work out what goes where to get it running. All coolant pipes are done etc,
just exhaust manifold needs a new bolt and spring, wiring needs routing properly and tidying, then just to build it all back up.
I darent fit my immobiliser and alarm,it might not run ever again haha

Spot on mate, i told you that youd have no bother with it at all, there couldnt be anything to go wrong lol
Oh how wrong you can be lol
Update, quite an exciting one lol-it caught fire yesterday hahaha put it out just in time before it got very serious. The alternator started smoking whilst running then the earth terminal started sparking then burst into flames, luckily as i was bleeding the coolant i had a couple of pints of water to put it out.
It burnt my battery earth and positive live feed to the alt, starter and shunt box.Got some new ones today, fitted a spare alt and it started sparking at the battery again before i even got the terminal on.On the advice of the helpful members on 205drivers forum i then disconnected the starter terminal-problem solved no sparking.
Starter has obviously obliterated itself inside and is shorting out.
Glad i didnt paint it now, will source a smaller, more powerful and hopefully less dangerous one off a newer Peugeot.

One thing i have learnt from this is just how quickly things can go out of control in a big way, beyond anybodies control.I did nothing wrong and nothing warned me it was about to happen.
I urge anybody,if they havent already,to have a fire extinguisher to hand when working on these old cars.
Even if you dont save the car, save yourself/garage/house/whatever.

Yes when funds allow,im just going to run 1.6 pepperpots for now.
Johnathan,i have been on about getting some since the day i bought it.
liquidpug,they do look rather nice.

Yesterday i identified my servo failed so went to that sh1thole called upullit to get one off a 205 that was there-it wasnt anymore,so i removed one off a saxo vtr and had to modify it to fit,had to split the servo apart th move the front face as the studs were 45degrees out meaning my reservoir and master would have been at 10oclock,then i had to cut a section out my brake pedal and reweld it on a different way to account for the longer linkage-result,i now have proper brakes again lol
