When you change an old for a new gasket should you always use sealant too once the surfaces are spotless?
Obviously you wouldn't for a head gasket, but things like gearbox casing, oil pump to block, sump etc - should / would you..?
Hi, i've never used any sort of sealant. The gasket is the sealer. I'd be careful using it as any stray bits may enter the oil system. :)

Your meant to apply it on oil pump and crank ends for sump no?
but i applied a very small amount all round on my last sump change, as it wouldn't stop leaking, it sorted it fine.
put sealer on the sump gasket as i didnt and leaked quite bad

Be careful though as any excess will block the oil strainer, bye bye engine.
I can only repeat what John said, be mega careful using sealant around oil sealing gaskets. I used a tiny amount on the sump gasket on my xe and remember when i changed the gasket, i looked at the pickup pipe and there was about 3 holes of the oil pickup filter that were free of silicone. The rest were completely blocked.
I fitted a new gasket using no sealant, and it hasn't leaked at all.
All's that sealant is for really is to seal parts that have no gasket at all. Such as the end cam caps, and the join in the end crank cap etc.
