View Full Version : Total loss, but unrecorded on HPI?

A car I own was 'CAT C total loss' paid out for in November last year. I retained the vehicle and have yet to 'inform the DVLA'. Now I got a friend of mine in the insurance game to HPI check the plate and its come back clear of any losses etc....

Is this because I havent done something with the DVLA or has a 'clerical error in your favour' been made?

I cant see anywhere on the V5C where I'd tell them about a CAT writeoff.

thoughts?

It sounds like it's not been declared then, what are you needing to still do from your end the? Is car in your name yet as I'd be selling it on.

Its still in my name... the car never left my drive while the case was going on etc.
I was told I have to inform the DVLA, but I'm unable to find out how to do so.

Its came back as clean because you still own it*. If you sell it & obviously send V5C to DVLA, they'll amend there records to show its C & send the new owner a letter informing then it needs a VIC.

Once VIC'd the new owner gets a logbook saying:

3: Special Notes

1. Declared new at first registration
2. Substaintially repaired and/or accident damaged; identity checked on xx xx xxxx

BUT the above is speculation depending on wether the insurance firm that done the initial claim passed information onto the DVLA.

*In a total loss claim, the insurer pays out on the basis of they take the car, in effect they buy the remains off you. You send them keys, logbook etc. IF you keep the salvage & take a reduced pay out for doing so, details dont tend to get passed on**. Hence some top end cars are sold as "unrecorded salvage" even though itll be a £30k BMW for example for which youd normally go through an insurance claim because of its value.

**Apparently anyway...

So while I still own it it will always come back clean, and upon sale it will come back dirty?

A mate of mine in the trade has HPI/TMR'd it and he says its clean.... Not even a record that I was paid for the loss lol

I know people personally that have had similar things and repaired them for there own car again and had to vic it to retax, so the staying clean bit whilst in your possesion is twaddle.

do as i said of fb and it will be cleared up fo sure mofo!
