As the old thread was full of me being skint and doing fcuk all apart from tidy up. I am now away from uni commitments for a year, and working at an engineering company where I have access to all manner of toys and full engine rebuilding kit. :)

For anyone that didn't follow it before:

Then onto today/this weekend.

First off, tidy up. lol

Can see how much of a crap hole it was here: (night before billing, painting my bumper stripe)

Got underneath it to see what its like after 2 years sat in the garage, still pretty damn good to be fair, pics make it look bad but it's all surface rust, will be wire wheeled off etch primed for now in stages as I stitch weld it throughout, a good red oxide coat on that and then probably just a random top coat for now, until I get a cage sorted and welded in as it'll burn through in a couple of places obviously. May even leave it as red oxide and put a load of moisture traps under the car.

edit: Just noticed how sketchy the stands look lol They are solid as there's no weight to the car at all atm, and I did make sure I can push the car about a fair bit without it going anywhere before I got under it. :)

Plans are to get it road worthy on a good chassis which I can then bolt stuff to, next up will be the engine, which is a bit backwards but I currently have access to all manner of engine rebuilding toys so it makes sense to do it now. Basically it will be a monster with a working loom with pedals and gears, probably a solid bar to steer it, some random lethal suspension and not much else until I finish building it up lol

Combe tomorrow for inspiration and then work on her on sunday :)

Rust gel is for anywhere I can't get to with wire wheels etc btw, or for soaking parts depending how well it works!

Nice :) I can honestly say I've never seen axle stands placed there lol please report on the rust protection stuff

Normally go just under the beam but that's coming off, find a strong point on a Nova is a good game, can take hours sometimes :)

The box sections either side of the fuel tank are a good place for stands. Rust attack products look good, heard some of those highly recommended, get 'em from Frost/Holden?

Think I'd have to get underneath to see what you mean but the chassis rails in a nova aren't really strong enough to take stands! It's not too bad on this partly because they're bugger already on the front and partly because there's nothing to it atm lol Rally design

Rally design for the products?

Tbh i use the beam mounts to use as a stand position too, find it's solid, and give best hight gain from a low car, never had any issues with it.

Nice to see your getting into this again mate.

Yeah rally design have a chassis repair or something or other section with a load of the bilt hamber products in, get a good review in the retro mags etc

i went to go view this one not to long ago, bit of rust in the standard places, but otherwise quite tidy. was quite near to me, thought id add it to my mustard to have a collection!

yeh it wasnt that long ago 2 an half years :P Lol it was in 2008, i went down there before i started uni, talked to the guy, had a carbon fibred up car in the garage! you see that? plus had a snow plough front bumper out back on in the shed he was trying to shift. but i deffo went to go to see it.

New toys as I broke the old one :(

Last one was closer to Mustard yellow too :( This has a pretty blue light near the cord to tell you when you plugged it in though, just In case you're a complete tard :)

Ends up in this though, looks like a lot more has disappeared than has tbh, and I only spent a couple hours on it, it's all the easy bit in the middle to be honest which hasn't got any stonechip on it.

And for anyone wondering the point/merit of doing all this:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-h2xXPHPQJiM/TjnHTG2G6FI/AAAAAAAAAFI/DLLxt7lTYUY/s640/102_0751.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lsIMHu8Wu6A/TjnHUc9Lt8I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/3WDTC_4GZFU/s640/102_0752.JPG
Each of the little dots/circles is a stonechip and spreading surface rust, right on the underside of the car where all road salt crap etc gets sent.

Also found the first of my minor nasties:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-tBG2poWDy3o/TjnHNzrFcCI/AAAAAAAAAE8/AlLblLrb2xM/s576/102_0748.JPG
Just a bit of rust on an edge where it's go in the lip.

Made a huge hole too.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-glOysaTwmuw/TjnHUCJAzoI/AAAAAAAAAFM/IiZle3ZCehE/s640/102_0753.JPG

I'm planning to keep the standard Vauxhall anti rust primer stuff as far as possible, as it seems to be doing a good enough job and it's hard enough to remove with a wire wheel so it's hardly gonna flake off lol I'll put a coat of etch primer over the lot, a light stonechip coating as I don't want to lash 10 kilo back on it tbh, and overpaint it engine bay/interior colour to keep water out of the stonechip as much as possible. Go for light coats as again I don't wanna lash 2 litres of paint on it, and also it should give it some more flexibility, and I don't exactly want/need to gloss up the underside.

Trying to get hold of some spot weld cutters too but paypal are being arses and have locked my account because I sent £3 to someone, apparently thats a suspicious transaction that could be a security threat.

Not much progress lately due to work commitments, but last weekend I went to see Mike for some wings:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-azA7x-pPQ-w/Tk2jVcV2YgI/AAAAAAAAAIs/FMGBJfQg_Ks/s1024/18082011489.jpg
Just a touch wider than expected:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ogcNO2bVBos/Tk2jXx2WWyI/AAAAAAAAAIw/-wT6zePbMlY/s1024/18082011490.jpg
lol

They're light as anything and will provide LOTS of clearance for semi slicks though. Not sure what to do about the rears now though.

Also got some spot weld cutters:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jkhNTs9N_iA/Tk2jYRcTsjI/AAAAAAAAAI0/j3NK4Acc5ck/s1024/18082011491.jpg

Tried using one earlier and it just skips all over the place, so I'm going to get a centre punch tomorrow (should have one really!) and see if that helps the little point stay where it should be.

scott.parker
19-08-11, 10:32 AM
lol lol lol
No going back now, you need some wide rears mate!

MK999
19-08-11, 04:13 PM
Oli D always ran his as skinny rears. Tbh, they're mainly for light weight. Thing is my wheels are 6.5J, which is just that touch wider than most.

MK999

First up was stage 2 on the diet, Banish this gruesome thing;
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-DnvhheLmFVQ/ToeV9fSwUgI/AAAAAAAAAMg/CyZNJmxWyF4/s640/01102011528.jpg

For this one, which is roughly 2 tonnes lighter.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Jhzwk88-ARw/ToeV9nfCBgI/AAAAAAAAAMk/OPVDS0-UdX0/s576/01102011529.jpg

Sharpened this thing up as it went blunt on me :( (And does work Limplamp you northern mincer, learn how to use a centre punch)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-YnBDXxYcBPU/ToeV8XlvZbI/AAAAAAAAAMc/IgxcdwTpH0g/s576/01102011530.jpg

Then welded up a few holes and little circles it made, probably gonna use a grinder/ flap disc on the rest tbh as it's far easier/neater to clean up and rips through it fast enough. Few welds look like bird poo too as I haven't used the thing in too long! Soon got used to it though and discovered a slightly darker shading on the mask works a lot better :)

Tommorows plan is to clean up the rest of the underside and get it welded, started on that last night but then realised I'd just accidently welded in the drivers seat rail to the chassis leg a bit better than it was before lol

Iain linked me this, cos he said he was trying to buy your wheels. Nice pic. lol

As for the spotweld cutters, I did centre punch. Wait until you have one over two panels or on a less than flat surface/dodgy angle. Happy drilling! :P

Not much progress yesterday on the car, but lots in terms of space/tidyness.

Actually have a clear walkway down here and space for the welder to tidy away now :)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Nv65UH7wRNs/Tonnmss0jKI/AAAAAAAAANQ/fbumXK15zhw/s720/02102011535.jpg

Just need to clear this:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4esmZIDsD_k/TonnmfzCOKI/AAAAAAAAANM/VTnd7L8UOYA/s912/02102011536.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-A2-jXBeOHwQ/Tonnl9uTXOI/AAAAAAAAANI/jwMTsCkL4-Y/s912/02102011537.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1VtfgPMYBwQ/TonnqS-oD3I/AAAAAAAAANU/gFi8vxsPMDQ/s912/02102011538.jpg

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mUCrrA-BG5Q/Tonnsvd2aTI/AAAAAAAAANc/CbgcN3Rsu6w/s720/02102011533.jpg

I'm gonna find out where you live.

Looks like it'd be a reasonable size area to work if you cleared your crap out

MK999
03-10-11, 06:46 PM
Mostly not my crap unfortunately :( If it was my choice I'd bin all the ancient wood and electrical/plumbing ****e that we never use etc and 90% of that racking up the back would be free. Might have to wait until the parents decide to holiday abroad again lol

The entire bench underneath the boards etc is pretty much unused/full of stuff to bin though, so lots of stuff can be hidden away there.

scott.parker
03-10-11, 06:48 PM

And all these little heaps of turd:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_2CO0JdichA/TwtlYwcHI_I/AAAAAAAAATI/yizwfMMq6iI/s1280/IMAG0042.jpg

Also meet my christmas cracker treasure, creepy, my new curl around anything welding lamp.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-V1ehbWpl0m0/TwtlVvkHzhI/AAAAAAAAAS4/VxDX1kSu98g/s1280/IMAG0040.jpg
Also, I cut all of this crap out:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6aJH8AF8M58/TwtlQZmeWKI/AAAAAAAAASk/R7wCrDgbfDE/s1280/IMAG0038.jpg
But the spot welds remain and grinding them out is a right chore, so I think it's spot weld drill bits, hours of fun, and welding/flap discing back to flat later. :(

editing edits: Pics now bigger, although still a bit crap.

And bores look fairly good:

Apart from :(:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g5ebBLDlhpg/Twy95OteAHI/AAAAAAAAATk/CJius9bW6i8/s1280/IMAG0056.jpg

Probably needs a new crank although I'll check what bearing oversizes are available, they're normally available in increments of thou not metres so I expect the crank is scrap, Bore wise I expect they are out of tolerance and I was really hoping to keep standard bottom end for now, as I'd like to go high comp forged pistons and rods eventually but can't afford it atm.

Might be new bottom end time. :(

Had totally forgot about this car, good to see work has resumed!

MK999
11-01-12, 10:06 PM
Crank is well beyond dead, thrusts go nowhere near 2-3mm oversize and grinding thrust faces is expensive anyway, so on the lookout for a new bottom end.

Thinking about management too as we can get good discounts on DTA at group buy quantities through work, and that would make it a lot simpler to wire in, as well as free up a lot of horses and possibilities with a proper inlet etc.

Andy
11-01-12, 10:16 PM
Thats thrust marks in them bores, you wont hone them out.You will have to go oversize

MK999
11-01-12, 10:20 PM
Yeah that block will be put to one side for now. On the lookout for a full good condition bottom end, but I may just have to whore myself out around town see if I can stretch to management and pistons/rods etc now.

Bo wikkedy management and carlos vandango pistons and rods without a decent block to put them in,and a fukked crank to attach them to?!
I love your prioritisation lol

Using this current bottom end would mean an overbore, which means pistons (and also makes it a decent block, nothing wrong with it besides the bores) Pistons means rods at the same time as the pins are press fit and 9 times out of 10 you will destroy the pistons removing the rods, so it makes it a nonsense activity to buy fancy pistons with the mindset of doing rods later. Crank would obviously be replaced, as said it's beyond dead.

Finding a new good bottom end circumvents the necessity for pistons/rods and this one can then be put to one side to work on as a complete swap at a later date.

Either way management is a good option for both power and ease.

I have a bare block from the engine I was looking to rebuild for my project. I am buying a fully built working engine now so got a full c16xe in bits in the garage. I have, but in bits, block, crank, pistons, end caps if you need any bits. Not sure if its in a suitable condition but can photograph any bits you need me too.

MK999
19-01-12, 09:35 PM
That's not a C16XE :p X18XE1, Z18XE bottom end is what I'm trying to source atm :)

Small update, not had any time to do anything on the car recently and no cash to buy up another engine but spent some time designing some bits this evening. Want to do away with the standard shifter and all the nonsense gubbings that does with it, and I don't fancy spending the cost of an engine rebuild on a quaife job, so came up with this:

Works a bit like this, actuating an arm at the bottom to get the required rotation on the shaft. No bolts in it as my solidworks toolbox has hidden itself somewhere.

Should look a bit like this when complete:

Couple of universal joints quaife style to get around the rack and it should end up with a pretty short positive shift and bring the gearknob up towards steering wheel height. Will measure up the displacements to get into gears/rotation required and fettle the distances on the design before it's made up.

With ally rods in the shifter and ally output shaft, with a carbon rod bonded onto ally ends and a nylon gearknob, the whole assembly comes in about 1.7kg including rosejoints.

Hoping before the end of the month to have the underside and bay full stripped down and at least primered but depends how busy work is, currently we have about 10-12 project cars/engine builds in though. Also still need to finish bushing the BMW as I've not chance to get onto that either lol

Won't the throw of that comedy length shifter stick be enormous?

Not with the throw of the comedy length actuator arm set to compsenate, may end up making it a tad taller if needs be, just a basic idea to work from.

You will need to open teh sunroof to change gear! lol

Good idea in principle though - get one made and start selling them! (if they work of course!)

Cheeky lol

I was aiming for it to sit next to the steering wheel but admittedly just made an educated guess on the length at the moment :d Luckily it's a sunroof'd shell though so all will be fine. lol
As for selling them a full kit would be rather pricy I think, not finding many sources for good quality cheap UJ's, which unfortunately are needed to avoid the silly place Vauxhall put the rack!

I did look at Peester's as well tbh, but it's mainly based on a converted cav shifter that Iain showed me.

Look at SADev shifters for ultimate inspiration ;)

As far as I can tell they only seem to be suitable for sequential stuff? Unless there's some secret to how they twist the output shaft that I'm missing lol

Sequentail yes, but also inspritanional to your theory too in the similiar "style" to what your after like.

Fair play, thought you'd bought me a sequential box though :(
