Soooo, where to start....
I picked this bargain up off ebay a couple of weeks ago,
With only four previous owners and 70,000 miles from new lol it has the old style d/s mirror and the p/s mirror blank, a brown dashboard with the vent blanks and a awesome green cheq interior, here's some pictures of when i got it home:

I have just brought KIWINOVA's old two door loon and i'm going to put the lowering springs off it onto this one, also i'm looking at getting some brand new weller wheels with 7x13 fronts and 8x13 rears and i have a really old school roof rack to do on it that just needs to be restored, i know where there is a green snowplough bumper... i might get the sills replaced aswell and i'm just gunna tidy it all up with a near nut and bolt rebuild

Right a small update from yesturday, mainly the day was spent stripping more parts from the red saloon but i did get in some time to go rust hunting on my little gem, and i have tonnes of pictures to show what i found... it's actually really solid, i know at some point it has had the rear quarters sprayed after some new rear arches and the front wings repaired which is quite a result really, the pictures don't do the car much justice really:
i poked the d/s wing:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/26072011927.jpg
surface at the bottom of the d/s wing:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/26072011928.jpg
Prodded the d/s door and it was only surface:

In all i'm chuffed that there isn't really much rust at all on it for a car of it's age, i think for the moment i'm just going to rust kill and primer the parts but in the long run it will probably have new sills, headlight sections and wings before next summer when i'm planning on getting a full outside respray done, just because i'm a perfectionist...

is that kiwi novas shell in the back ground to donate parts?

Calamity Josh
26-07-11, 11:37 AM
Yeh, it is his old nova, i've had some bits off it, i.e lowering springs, scuttle pannel mesh bits, front brakes, gearbox, driveshafts and the rear seatbelts and i've been offered more than i payed for it for the rest!!!

Today didn't go anywhere near to plan as i'd wanted it to, the idea was to wash it, polish it and fit my rear seatbelts, BUT SOMEONE STOLE MY SPONGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol so i ended up just doing what i could with the seatbelts, i didn't get round to finishing fitting them as i'd left two of the bolts up the workshop, i'm also not fitting the lapbelt as a) i cba b) it'd look scruffy
Fitting the recoiling bit:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011981.jpg
My technical way of making the holes in the lining through to the captive behind:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011984.jpg
That side half finished:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011983.jpg
the other side half finished:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011985.jpg
Any idea how to get these bungs out of the floor where the hole is for the bottom half of the belts, i've tried mauling one it didn't help but was good anger management:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011986.jpg
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011987.jpg
I'm also after a pair of these headrests (green with the hole in the middle) if anyone knows of some as they are damaged:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011988.jpg
And... half an hours work concluded:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/27072011989.jpg

I will keep you updated on any more advances;
p.s anyone after a 1 owner from new nissan 280 fairlady z about to come up for sale:

the seat belts arent necessary but if it was mine i would much rather have seatbelts for when i carry people around in the back for safety reasons, might not be origional but its alot safer, its lookin amazing bro it really is, get the new pics up asap :D

Calamity Josh
29-07-11, 09:04 AM
Technically bro they are original as rear seat belts were a optional extra on my nova back in the day, also i'd much rather have some seat belts in the back then someone else smeared across my windscreen! as i kept saying to stuart.... respect the car (not stuart on here) So then, i've not had time to properly update in a couple of days, in the meantime i took loads of bits off the red nova, polished part of the roof of the green one, and half lowered it so far.... it has rake! lol
you can see here that i have gave the p/s of the roof one coat of polish:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/280720111000.jpg
And after taking the suspension off of now possibly the worlds highest ex trackday nova:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/290720111023.jpg
I got round to putting the front 75mm drop springs on my nova ( the backs i'm going to do today, it does look quite good with rake tho!

MAJOR UPDATE!
well, yesterday i had a bit of time spare and got round to lowering the back... and then after merris's offer things had to be done! So first thing this morning i was round at merris's house drooling over bretts old nova and picking up some new rims! There a pair of banded (to 8j) sr steels painted with silver lips and hurricane grey centres, for the moment i have tryed the wheels both on one side for pictures and then finally put them both on the back of the car! i might have three standard width sr steels coming soon which will be put on the front of the car and one will be a spare eventually the 8j rears will probably be put on the front with the fronts banded to 8 or 9j for the rear of the car, i also got round to finishing the rear seatbelt conversion anyway here's some pictures:
The nova alongside my racing car after being lowered:

The d/s wing had completely fell through:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00449-20111002-1019.jpg
So old ones were put to one side:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00528-20111009-1505.jpg
And new ones are here (i didn't pay that much for them), i bent one bringing it home which needs to be straightened properly:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00429-20111002-0856.jpg
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00430-20111002-0856.jpg

http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00526-20111009-1501.jpg
I also killed the rest of the rust i could see around and about so some finished pictures for today:

also the d/s rear wheel to rear sill has rotted through which needs to be sorted:
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00521-20111009-1435.jpg

I have got a set of replica dealer plates made, also have some new headlight protectors and a early p/s mirror!

heres some pictures of the headlight protectors i picked up two sets and the others are currently up for sale:

http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/IMG00359-20110917-1812.jpg
And the mirror:
The textured black plastic is spot on with no marks or damage.
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/DSCF2178.jpg
It is all complete but is currently seperated but it goes back together really easily with a couple of dabs of glue.
Arm is metal and the paint it peeling, it unscrews so it is easily painted with some satin black.
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/DSCF2175.jpg
http://i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j404/CalamityJosh/DSCF2176.jpg
This is the only damage and it is minor, the shiny pastic rim has a slight chip taken out of it. I suspect it was from the old boy reversing and just clipping it. Just needs a tiny bit of filler and gloss black to make it mint.

end of may might even be better! i'm sure we could arrange a resonable meeting place nearer the time, i do know of a nice show jumping arena in finching field my dads friends with the owner, it's all gravel and floodlight they also have a catering van that does nice cheezy chips but that might be abit to far out of the way, shippy could bring his kadett, leo his astra if he still has it then and i have another mate with a kadett aswell?

it is an option, i'll get dad to have a word with the bloke that owns it, we could keep it vauxhall or let some other people in like we both have friends in the vw crowd, if we kept it invite only with people we know, trust and wouldn't roar around like retards. the bloke might want abit of money but even a couple of quid a head would be resonable for use of the premices

i have 8j at the moment which just rubs on the back arch, and rubs alot on the front arch, i'm having the 8's on the front and getting 9's for the rear, all i will have to do is turn up the arch lips with a roller, if you don't want this grief i'd say 7j front and 7.5 rear? remember this is saloon arches i don't know about the hatch's

Why do the loons seem to have this bad area where they go on the bottom bit near the rear arches? the one Ive just bought needs both sides doing there, and the other parts across the arch on the sill's, everywhere els is fairly good bar them area's, though im yet to give it a good poke all over!

Now here is a question im sure Ive already asked, how wide are them steels banded to and how low do you think you have gone?

Well... he'd put new rear arches on but bodged those back section bits and the front of the wings before getting the wings, valance and rear quarters resprayed! if there going to do a job why not do it propperly! rant over...

Scott

Those steels are 8j, i recon i could push up to 9j on the rear and 8j on the front with turning the lips up and rolling the arches slightly. On the back i can go a further inch lower before the tyres will hit on the arch celing and the bumpstop on the beam will bottom out, (this is with no shock or spring, just a jack.) so if i reduced the tyre profile and had more strech i think i could get it on the bumpstop without it rubbing on the celing of the arch. but i would have to find some way of temporarily securing the beam there; i'm planning on only going this low for shows and i'll stick the coilovers back on for everyday.
Taking the lips up i can get the back wheels sat so the rim is flush (height wise but slightly inwards therefore 9j would be better) with the arch! so that's the 14" rim size plus the 55 tyre profile currently on there i'd say theres roughly 2.5" ground clearance from the sill just infront of the arch with those tyres and i could get it down more by lowering tyre height...

i bought the two 8j's from merris which were spares from bretts sr. But i have hunted around for somewhere to get two 9j's done as i've picked up some more sr steels and have been recomended this company: http://www.alonzecustom.co.uk/
Hope this helps?

your nova is really nice. I've got a maroon mk2 4 door loon (probably the least desirable of the loons but i love it) with the same bottom of boot problem only mine had duck tape in them not filler. How are your pro sports treating you? Are rears damper and separate spring?

Nice looking saloon...I like it when people keep the factory colours - adds to the period charm. Especially that interior.

The wide wheels - will they still have those centre caps with the silver griffin on? Or are you getting rid of those? I'd love to retrofit wheels like the originals on your loon to my 1989 Mk1 3-door as it came standard with the round-hole steelies which IMO don't look as good as the triangle hole ones.

hi newbie here!
this is uncanny i have just bought identical car to do up for my lad - spooky!
at least i know what colour it is now!
bizarre that we have an old roof rack to go as well - good job we are hundreds of miles apart we are B178 JCH
will upload some pics once i get it back from garage but its stuck there with duff suspension
few questions i need answers to asap please so i can get it on the road for my lads 19th on 4th june?
i need to lower it by around 60 - 100mm i think to get the look right and want to buy new kit as don't trust second hand shocks!
i have had a couple of orders knocked back because distributors say there kits only fit hatchbacks but i can't see the difference - what do you all put on loons?
plus i have had to have new thermostat fitted but didn't know you had to change cam belt to do so first bit of expense i wasn't expecting.
also plan to keep steels but put on 175's and at some point he wants steels banded
no pictures just yet but if you can help with suspension so i can get it moving would be really helpful
cheers
please text if easier ?

Firstly the colour is leaf green not Florida green which i first thought when i put this thread up lol,
the shocks between saloons and hatchbacks are identical so don't worry about that,
and regarding the cambelt what engine is it as if it's a 1l they have a timing chain instead,
your son has a great choice in first car :)

thick piece of ally, 4 holes, 4 threaded holes, 5 threaded holes, whatever you're adapting to. 4 say, allen headed bolts, bolt into your original hub on 4x100, leave 5x112, 5x120, 4x108 etc etc threaded holes in the adapter to bolt wheels to.

I understand that concept but you will always get two holes that overlap slightly no matter how you arrange them over each other. You can bolt the adapter on to 4x100 but you would have to drill and tap partially through a bolt holding the adapter on.

Sorry, my choice of phrase wasn't right with not understanding how it would work. It was more not seeing how you could get an adapter to do that fitment.

my brother had researched into it, as he was going to put them on his Vento, and they are made, perhaps the bolt holding the adapter on has a slight bit out of for the other bolt coming through?

If you find some more info let me know as I'm keen to see them. My Mini is 4x100 and finding wheels for it is a pain. I had to plug, weld and re-drill my 5x120 to get them on.

Easy, lots more room to play with when you're not trying to make 2 bolt spaces, but rather a bolt space and a thread:

I understand that concept but you will always get two holes that overlap slightly no matter how you arrange them over each other. You can bolt the adapter on to 4x100 but you would have to drill and tap partially through a bolt holding the adapter on.

Sorry, my choice of phrase wasn't right with not understanding how it would work. It was more not seeing how you could get an adapter to do that fitment.

The solution is to use one of the existing holes with an offset peg. They're usually custom made but iirc someone on ed38 makes them. Some pics here.

(sorry for the thread h-jack :))

Even using a stud like on the design instead of being threaded into the adapter it would still overlap too much to allow it to work.

I'm presuming it has to be precise. The offset peg must "float"?
