Sorry it's not about a nova. I hav a corsa c 2002 failed
Mot on steering rack and steering wheel moving in and out about 10mm had a look at the column and the play is in the column was wondering is there anything I can tighten up as a new one is £1000 new from vaux. I have checked the column mounting bolts and the steering wheel bolt is tight. Cheers Gareth

check the steering knuckle on the shaft between the wheel and the rack. These ar common to go slack. When my sister was looking for one we came across heaps with this problem.

Have you checked the Universal Joint at the bottom of the column that is just above the floor? The bolt can come loose and cause movement/knocking

Or as above, steering arms are very common faults and inner steering rack bushes.

common as muck on these especially the later ones.
New racks from gm are about 180 irrc pattern ones are less
My mate just changed his rack yesterday because of this problem
