Just a silly question really. Is there much difference in the performance and handling between a standard Nova Sport (not tweaked in any way) and a Standard 1.3 SR? How does this also compare to the SR 1.3 with the 2e2 (double) carbs?

The sport does 0-60 in high 8's and has more power, the SR does it in mid 10's so a big difference in performance. Think top speed a tad more on the Sport. SR has more equipment (equipment in them days means stereo etc). Handling I'd have guessed them to be as near as makes no difference.

yeh they were a wee bit punchier, i think the irmsher cam was an optional extra IIRC that made it do the whole 8 second jobbie!

werent the carbs an optional extra too, so you could pay over the odds for a 1.3 sr lol

the carbs came in a box for dealer fitting, so there is a good chance a few sports never had them fitted...

Just on weight, the sport will be quicker, and handle better, with no sunroof etc...

Std SR 70HP (early single carb)
Sport with forties 82HP
Sport with forties and cam 93HP

Sport will be lighter, not by much

The Ashley red backbox was also in the box.
The rear seat on a Sport is one piece, not a 60/40 split.
No centre console
No side demist vents
2-speed fan
No passenger door mirror
Certainly no holiday (hole in the roof to see the sun!)
Two spoke steering wheel

Let's not forget, the Sport was a Base, with some SR trim seats, homologated against the Nova Swing (I have a set of homologation papers somewhere...)
Handling... hmmm... the Sport had 175/70 x 13 boots, bigger than the SR, so a little more grip.

I have to remember back now to 1987 when I bought my Sport, two years young. I remember that it went like a bat out of hell compared to my brother's Mk1 Astra GTE. It handled miles better. It sounded much better!! I remember how it pulled all the way to red line in top gear, ahem, I mean to 70mph. I also remember it doing 41mpg on average on my mad dashes to work (a 12 mile run cross country).

Three years later, in race trim, it still did 33mpg on average on the run to work!!

i'm certain the 2 speed fan was not a particularly good weight saving option....maybe 2 grams of resistor if that....

It's worth about 2hp because the three speed uses more electrickery, honest.

i'll believe you.

Ive fitted a 3 speed fan to my Sport, really can't see what the point of a 2 speed is tbh

Very interesting, never had a shot in a sport, with only a few Novas actually on the go up here (painted up 1.2is I assume!) i will probably never get a shot.

But.... from what is being said, the basic sport and "improved" SR from 85 onwards (double carb) there won't be a huge difference.
However, with the wieght saving and the "dealer pack" a complete sport will be miles faster.

I have the numbers from the homologation papers for the swing model that was then apperntly extended for the sport from a racing co that used them.

The SR only came with a single carb, the Sports were the ones with the twin webers.

I wonder if anyone still has an original "unwrapped" box with Sport goodies in there attic lol

I have been into Sports for over 10 years and always looking on Ebay and I have never seen a new unused setup on there.

Maybe Mowgli was thinking of this.

its interesting that the same engine can put out 69, 75 (Mk1 astra) and 82 BHP more or less by changing carbs\ inlets and a back box.

That's usually the idea of tuning and changing those bits for the extra power helping an engine breath is where the power is at
