I have a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 2s on some Astra rims, plenty of tread left but they feel a bit hard - harder than they should be. They've been sitting outside for 2 years in all weathers though.

Any good ways to soften them up again?

I'd say ruined if they've been sat for 2 years with no movement

Nah they'll be fine, ive just put 2 tyres on my escort van that have been stood over a year outside.Fine.
To soften then just do a burnout!!

check the tire over for cracks then just scrub them in gently, once up to temp they should soften with use

This is true, the ditchfinders attached to my Corsa have been outside since I bought the car (14 months ish) and the sidewalls on them are beyond perished now.

Just had a nosy at the sidewalls and they look OK at first glance, will have a thorough inspection later. If it's not raining I might try a hefty burnout too then to see if they soften up :d

surely simply going down the road will put heat into them, and they will reach 'working' temperature quite quickly as they are a road tyre..

just set them on fire, walk away and order another pair, they will defo be funked and aint worth the risk for £150 or so, even though they dont looked cracked they will defo crack within a few hundred miles and if a front one blows at a decent speed then its bye bye car/you

but the outer side rubber is there more for protection from the outside than for keeping the air in. the inside surface & the belting look after that.
