Petrol? lol
How big does it sound? fuel gauge reading fine? what tank? could be a anti-theft ball or the float off an old fuel gauge that couldve broken?

Best bet will be to wait untill you've pretty much used up all your petrol, then remove the fuel guage sender and try and fish out the offending item with a bit of wire. As said above the two likely candidates are the normally caged ball that stops fuel going up the filler neck around corners, or the float from the sender unit - which you'll know straight away if you take the sender out.

well my sender is a little bit iffy at times, i have a digi dash and sometimes it will go up 2 bars or down 2 bars when i stop or start the car

its a gsi/gte tank with a bolt in sender, its definitely not the sound of petrol. sounds like something hard inside it
