Took the car out tonight and as soon as the car gets warm say 5mins driving i get to fifth gear and cant get out other than selecting neutral. I got home in fifth! Once near home i put it in neutral but left the clutch down and coasted to my house, once at a stop i raised the clutch and the car jolted foward (as if in gear) and stalled! Then turned off ignition and re started and strangley i could then selected all gears?? WTF!!
What could thid be?
Clutch cable?
Gear linkage?
Engine mounts?
Cheers

its either the pressure plate or release bearing thats fooked...its not pushing the clutch in enough (you may be lucky and just have a stretched clutch cable)

I've been having a very similar problem but had put it down to wear on the gear linkage as it was crunching a bit on gearchanges...snapped the gear selector inside the box so was stuck in 4th. Replaced the gearbox and it felt ok for first couple of days then the problem came back and I was having symptoms similar to yours. On Sunday it was really bad, wanting to go even with clutch fully down but its not been too bad last few days.

Like i say its fine till the car is warm then its stuck in 5th! Then once home in 5th i turn the car off and on and i can select all gears and pull on my drive?
Is that pic of my clutch cable fully adjusted?

Is there any oil/fresh oil in the gearbox?

Ill check oil but it was fresh 800 miles ago and havent seen any leaks on drive! Also clutch looked like new when i changed the box 800 miles ago? Could i get more adjustment with a new clutch cable?

Where does the clutch pedal sit in relation to the brake pedal?

That cables been mega adjusted.

Its not the friction plate, its likely to be a nackered pressure plate

Similar position! Maybe slacken the clutch cable off?
Thanks for all the help on this people!

Maybe slacken the clutch cable off?

Yes, to see if it makes any difference. Adjust it about a quarter of the thread length

EDIT: are you getting any unusual noises?

No unusual noises at any time.

Took the car out tonight and as soon as the car gets warm say 5mins driving i get to fifth gear and cant get out other than selecting neutral. I got home in fifth! Then turned off ignition and re started and strangley i could then selected all gears?? WTF!!

UPDATE
does the same as above but i stopped car when stuck in fifth and restarted and went straight into first, so went uo the gears and as soon as i get to fifth i cant go back down? But if i press the clutch up and down a few times can then drop back down into any gear? what you think cable?
cheers

personally, i think there is something horribly wrong with the 5th gear selection, either the synchro or selector is knacked, as the main symptom is that it won't deselect the gear when the shaft is turning...

fastcar1cars

can now deselect from 5th when moving if i press the clutch pedal up and down twice??

who refurbed the gearbox?

as refurbishing a box is the quickest way to f*** them if you dont know what your doing

The box was meant to have been brought from autovaux? But i got it from ebay! Lol! Ive ordered a clutch cable!
When it happens you can hear a click and then if you pump the clutch twice you can hear another click and you can then go down the gears from fifth!
My mate says his seat does the same and the ratchet in the cable is knackered but not sure novas have a ratchet clutch cable?

No rachet gear on a nova cable. Just a fixed length cable.

Ok ill try cable as like said looks on max adjustment so mayb stretched! If not who knows! Lol! Hope the box is ok! Had two f16 boxes in it now! Maybe time for an f20 if i have to!

even if the clutch isn't releasing, you can pop any gear back into neutral as long as you are off the throttle.....this is a gearbox problem.....

remember, in the uk, reconditioning is mostly done with a steam cleaner, to get the road muck off the outside. very few people actually pull a gearbox down, and re-bearing it, which, with access to some decent tools, is actually a quite easy job. my first nova was a b reg, and the input shaft bearings weren't too good, (they actually upgraded to different ones around that time), so i stripped the box, bought 4 new bearings & the seals, and over a lunchtime, me & one of my colleagues fixed it, in a tractor dealership...
