I think rattle canning it is prob a waste of time better gettin a spray gun and get some one to mix up a matt finish paint at least that way you'd have a better more even finish

But in all seriousness, don't matt black it!

If you're insisting on using spray cans, spray it a non-matt colour and go all out on the wet sand and lacquering. Will be a shonky job but will still look better than a murdered out black colour!

@calibra-keith, are you sure it was Matt and not Satin? as Satin has that sheen to it.

100% cheap ass matt black, cost about a tenner it was only done so it didn't look as bad after fitting new panels, it was red and was going to get it resprayed after winter couple of year ago but sold it. may look satin becasuse it was wet in picture.

Problem with using rattle cans to do a whole car, is you'll end up using loads and its expensive. If you do just a few thin coats, and don't bother with the door shuts, under boonet etc then you could probably do it relatively cheaply, but then you have to wonder whats point in spraying it at all? Better off spending a bit more, and doing it propelry with a compressor and gun.

he only wanted a pic of 1 matt black. he said not fussed how it really looks. just sounds like he spent money on the engine if its only a track car just go 4 it mate. as long as when u drive it u happy thats all that matters.

If your going to matt black it i would say rattle can it. I did my old nova a few years ago. There was a BMW knocking about that was matt black the paint work looked s*** and that was done professionally. Just take your time with it. Anyway heres a picture of my old one (its a bit dirty in the picture) lol

Well the choice and cost of gun is going to depend a bit on what rating compressor you have, they aren't that expensive though. You can get celulose paint off ebay for decent prices too. I did think of using rattle cans when I sprayed my Nova, but then I thought how many cans I'd previously used on just a door or tailgate - then multiply that by a whole car and it just wasn't worth the cost. To be fair it is easier to use cans rather than a compressor, I'm just saying don't assume its the cheap option.

Did you laqcer it

nope, if i did there would be a shine to it so wouldn't really be matt black it would be more like a satin black

rattle cans vary in spray pressure as the can gets emptier,
compressor and gun every time and will be cheaper if you already have the compressor, not a fan of shat black when cheap 2k direct gloss is £15 litre and 2 litre will paint a nova easy

If done with proper cans it can be done.
My nova is done with rattle cans, but not the ones you buy at hallfords.

There is a paintshop close to where i live that makes m on request, using proper sikkens paint, and special high pressure cans with special nozzles.
It does cost about 18 quid a can, and i needed about 1 for each panel.

you do not want matt black, matt black cannot be washed properly. what you need is satin black.

matt will look light grey like a blackboard, satin FTW.

hardest thing with cans is getting an even coverage on a large area. It could look dreadfull if screwed up.

Matt black is a paint in the ass to paint, iirc i had do do my bonnet 5 times before it had a good finish. But Its a proper black, no greyish look.
