After buying Nick Jackson's old car i'm keen to love it in the most appropriate waylol

Since I can't really validate how well she's been looked after\serviced, i want to give a her a little pamper.

I was advised 10/50 oil but does anyone have a preference?

not very standard then lol i'd have thought `10w50 would be too thick, as generally higher spec engines run thinner oil. (for example you can get 0w5 for race bikes lol) i'd just say stick with semi-syn 10w40. its still probaby too good for it lol

Iirc i was always told by mate mate who is a vaux tech, that an xe should be running 10w40, semi synthetic, but with it being overbored to a 2.1 then im unsure if youd need thinner or not, could Nick not shed any light as to what he used to run in the old girl?

I use 10/40 semi in mine and that has been rebored. Doesn't mean it's right though lol Surely a rebore won't require a different oil as it's the same tolerances still?

Why not ask Nick?

Would have thought 5W 40 or 5w 30 fully synthetic

10/40 what the engine was built for, cant see a bit or boring would make a diff.

I was going to ask Nick but didnt want to bother him with every trivial question, he'll regret me ever buying it. Lol

Don't want to do it any harm, maybe I'm being over protective but the uncertainty of it's last 2 years doesn't help.

Pm'ing nick also.
Cheers all

Yeh i agree a rebore would do anything to effect the thickness that it needs in oil. as its only like a couple of thou off the walls in the end. stick with semi synthetic 10w 40, just change it more often. come visit when your done :thumb:

don't go too thin on oil is my advice :thumb: even though its had work its still an old engine and super duper race oils will do it no favours :)

Agree /\. I was doing some reading up on oils the other day. You need to factor in how often you are using it (laid up at all?) or how hard its revving, thats where the engine wear is increased.
Also after my read up I was put off from changing the oil too frequently, it's not cheap in any case.

I am running Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w60 oil in the Sport. It runs fine on it and has plenty of oil pressure.
If its good enough for a 300+bhp modern M3/M5 engines then its good enough for the little old Sport.
Also available as Castrol Edge now(Just rebranded for general sale away from BMW dealers) and was formerly Castrol RS.
