Hi all put a f16 box on my c20xe and it was a mare to set up the gear linkage! Done it though! This was 3 months and 1000 miles ago! Yesterday after some spirited driving i lost all gears bar 5th! So limped home and left the car till today, and everything is fine again? Do the linkages slip? Any other advice?

It could slip if it wasnt tight enough where the lever joins to the linkage but shouldnt slip back unless it was divine intervention.. LOL
IME I've found knackered engine mounts can render certain gates of the shift to vanish but thats pretty extreme.
Was your car originally a 4speed as you need to remove some plastic below the gaiter on the tunnel to allow the lever to move into the 5th gate position. Also I'd imagine its impossible to set up the linkage if you havent reversed the plasic UJ between the linkage & the box turret, have you?

Yeah the uj has been reversed! Gears have been fine for 800 miles! Lol! Car was a 5 speed i think! It lost the gears then this morning i put it into first very firmly and it then went into every gear fine! Think its gotta be linkage? Box was a re furb and seems fine!
Ill have a good look at linkage! Maybe strip it and re grease it and tighten it right up!
Cheers

UPDATE!!

Took the car out tonight and as soon as the car gets warm say 5mins driving it happens! got home in fifth! Once near home i put it in neutral but left the clutch down and coasted to my house, once at a stop i raised the clutch and the car jolted foward (as if in gear) and stalled! Then turned off ignition and re started and strangley  i could then selected all gears?? WTF!!
What we think clutch cable need adjusting?
Cant be linkage!
Cheers

Might be worth replacing the clutch cable then?

What cant this be adjusted?

Of course it can, but yours doesnt sound like an adjustment issue. Move the clutch arm towards the rear of the car, then twist the plastic lug that sits in the arm/on the threaded part of the cable to adjust.

What else could it be?

I'd start by checking all of the engine mounts, then the gear linkage. Unhook the clutch cable then with a friend each end make sure that that is moving freely. If all is OK then next time you have the problems, take the pin from the middle of the white UJ by the gearbox turret and see if the gears can be selected OK on the gearbox itself.
