View Full Version : Wheel bolts question

Edd

The wheels I have are Oz/Msw's, they were originally for VW's

I have just bought 16 new wheel bolts, vauxhall fitment

I'm now a little worried that the tapered bit of the bolt is not the same angle as inside the wheel, hope that makes sense, as I just doesn't feel right when fitting

Are all wheel bolts for every wheel/car manufacture the same angled taper ?

Do I need some VW ones ?

Any help suggestions would be great

As long as they tighten up they should be fine lol
VW may be the same TBH, I have BMW wheel bolts on the Sport and they fit perfect.

lol they do tighten up lol but only a couple of mill touch the wheel

But I took a bolt out of the astra and about 10mm touch the wheel

Probably worrying too much as usual but all ways better to check, don't want 4 wheels coming off on the maiden journey lol

The taper angle would concern me too tbh. Can you get VW bolts the same length/thread size?

ive run steel wheel bolts on alloys b4 an had no problems...should b fine but if your worried best to change them mate. :)

I would get some others that are a closer tapered match tbh

Although I wouldnt have thought that the VW wheels would be that much different?

I have used VW wheels with GM studs in the past without any probs!

I'll have to borrow a couple of a mate I think, anyone know if VW are different?

Bout a month/6 weeks I reckon

Need to send the spoiler up to you and get the seals/mirrors off you so I can build the doors up, that's the last big job tbh, the list is getting smaller :)

Slight difference in length;)

Could always check them with some engineering blue:)

Are you sure these wheels definitely fo a VW?? or are they the same pcd and off something else?

Edd,
You really like playing russian roulette with wheels......don't youlol

Hope you get them sorted, I'm sure you will eventually;)

I'm not 100% sure what there off tbh

How do you measure the angle inside the wheel ?

I may sign up to WheelWhores. To see if they could shed any light

Put a thin smear of engineering blue(or grease) on to the tapered section of a wheel bolt, insert into the rim bolt hole carefully (i.e. perpendicular to thwe hole until seated and turn it, is the blue/grease smeared across the full tapered seat or not, if it is the seat matches the angele of the wheel bolt taper;)

Does that help or :wtf:

Yeah makes sense, kinda did that with seeing the mark on the bolt and only 1/2mm touches

Bloody wheels   lol

I have posted a couple of question on wheel whores, no idea if that's a good place to ask or not lol

I'll post up a couple pics later of how the bolts touch the wheel

How did you get on with this Edd?

Its just that I am wrestling with a mysery clunking from the front n/s wheel. I have upgraded/changed every suspension component, including a hub and bearing....

I think it may be slight wheel movement due to a lack of clampage from the wheel bolts...

I am running VW wheels btw! ;)

vw and vauxhall bolts are completely different! (the thread is the same) Do not use vw bolts on vaux and vice versa! I found this out after using nova studs on my polo.

thye are both a 60 degree taper so I cant see there being any problem.

He's right, I have both vw and vaux wheel bolts in my shed and they are quite different. Just been and checked.

lol almost everything has a 60 degree taper. reap roystons links, it does rather prove that they are lol

a mate of mine ran ford wheels on his polo for about 6 years with no problems.
also, how do you think aftermarket wheels work then? they are sold by PCD and offset, no mention on taper angles at all.

there are many other possible reasons for why your wheels fell off

standard nova stud on left, vw stud on the right. (i have just taken this out of my 99 polo) The vaux taper is square, the vw dished. :)

Oh and most after market wheels have a 60degree tapper but you have to use different bolts on a VW, well we did on our polo when using the Ripspeed ****, the bolts where like the vauxhall items!

Interesting John - cheers for the pics...

There is clearly a different taper angle on those bad boys - they look 45 degrees!

if he's running VW wheels then he needs VW bolts, not vauxhall ones?

So, he does indeed need VW bolts, not vauxhall ones then? The taper is in the wheels not in the hubs, and the threads are the same...

^^^ correct I do and bump lol

I need VW bolts, does anyone work for/know the part number for these bolts on the right ?
