View Full Version : Matt's Mincing around.

MattBrown
17-06-11, 12:23 AM
Hey up all.

Decided to start a thread of all my mincing, akin to LeeLegs just not as big (or as many cars lol)

So where to begin.

I had a C reg 1.0, came cheap, was rotten, did some welding, saw my ****, scrapped it.

I scrapped it because this L Reg GSI shell came along, and was a lot beter then what I had x 100000.

So as per, cash, trailer, towcar, collected. No messing lol

Shes a 1993 L reg GSI, 85k from new, Part history, Been around the scene for a while.

Shes had an E16, 20SEH, C20Let (never used) and now a carbed C20XE.

The plans are the keep her tidy, clean, simple etc, standard insides.

Super low on speedlines, with the compulsort Seat Cordura splitter.

Other plans are to rebuild my C20LET for the 2013 show season.

Dont really plan on using her much, just sit there, and occasional track day maybe, or just sit therelol

Money is tight as per, lottery winnings have gone, and dads taken back his credit card:roll: So as per all the other projects im payinglol :d

Erm, lets keep it light hearted, and a bit of fun to read/laugh at what im up to.

Ill upload some pics onto the next post.

Matt

Being a huge fan of the "Redtop" engine, it was the only choice:d

So off I trotted with mine to Flintshire Performance Engines (Phillip) on here.

He was mega busy putting together a Corsa Turbo for PVS, so gave me the tools, and shouted torque figures to me on the rebuild.

Only got a few pics but you get the idea:thumb:

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/Lucy%20L%20Reg%20Nova%20GSI%20Project/247512_10150633174945634_760175633_19139343_773043 1_n.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/Lucy%20L%20Reg%20Nova%20GSI%20Project/247915_10150633175780634_760175633_19139346_196295 1_n.jpg

Sexy looking Kent vernier pullies. (come with no bloody timing marks, but I figured it out in the end)

After the engine was built, it was turned over on the bar etc, after being filled with oil.

Then I headed for the garage (Cheers grandma and grandad lol)

And fired her in, now, because im a hero, and decided solid mounts would be "ace mate" I offered the first one up, no worries, rear is in, then the front gearbox mount, again no real issues.

Then the engine mount, FOOK me she was hard, 2 hours of bars, jacks, ropes, cranes everything. Finally got her in about 1am, this was enough for me, so came home

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/Lucy%20L%20Reg%20Nova%20GSI%20Project/248218_10150633176735634_760175633_19139351_500355 6_n.jpg

Then I went down again, after work, all alone:( lol

I have now got the rad, wiring loom, slam pannel, tanks (Tempory, bailey ones on order) and the inlet for the carbs on.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/Lucy%20L%20Reg%20Nova%20GSI%20Project/254471_10150649557475634_760175633_19352509_607847 5_n.jpg

Then found out I had to take the inlet back off, to let me drill and tap the vaccuum take off for the brake servo lol

So shes now back off.

I also made the exhaust system up, GTE manifold, cut down fitted to a full stainless system, with 2" backbox.

Thats how its all sat at the min, the suspention is off as I have a set of brand new Gaz coilovers, full polybush kit and a new set of hubs, wishbones and 22mm tie bars to go on.

I have decided to take the bigblock stuff off, and have a set of GTE shafts with 4 brand new CVs on.

Plans for tommorow are to drill and tap the inlet, then refit.

Collect my fuel pump cradle nuts from the dealers, and fit my facet silver top and filter.

Then fit the other wing, refit the other skirt, and maybe weld the 2 plates onto the sill that are needed.

Other jobs include removing the steering rack and making the exhaust sit higher.

Hope it wasnt too boringlol

MattBrown
17-06-11, 10:02 AM
Cheers fellas.

Its gonna be clean enough in the bay.

Phase 2 of the rebuild is where I will go crazy, planning 2 new quater pannels and a full respray including the bay.

The paint on the car is probably a 9/10, but the bay is probably a 6/10.

It looks "Presentable" and could be shown, but I want it cleaner and cleaner every time I look at it lol

More shiny bits have been ordered, Bailey header tank, Wiper cover, Oil pipe and water pipe. Chrome bonnet stay and polished brake servo cover.

Also worth noting is the exhaust is for some reason sat way to the left, so this will be cut and modified once its running etc.

No idea pal, I was "Told" there was only 6 GSI's on an L reg, but I know of 2, so unless theyre very lucky, I think there was afew more then 6lol

Hoping for roughly 185bhp.

Plans include:

4 pot willwood or AP brakes.

Quaiffe SCCR gearbox (I wanted corsakids, but it came up just at the wrong time:()

Bigish power c20let (400ish)

More Bling.

Been a busy few weeks.

Not much has happened on lucy, as Ive been playing KTM and Bought a GSXR600

I have also done my CBT, got my theory and mod 1 bike test coming up.

I did manage to collect my Twin weber DCOE45s off Ben (Sr-Rally)

I also put my wind deflectors on, and had a mince with my inlet manifold, drilling and tapping etc.

I have ordered my misab plates, chokes and rose joints for my gear linkage.

Right then, her indoors 306 died a death, so I have gone and got her another one to run around in, 1400cc, air con, electric everything, 80k, taxed and tested with the gearbox gone £215. BARGAIN imo.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/a9e8a016.jpg

I have now machine polished my dailey van too:

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/22f0fd7c.jpg

Then the new toys:D

Its a Suzuki GSXR 600, K3, 2003 model, with only 4800 miles from new, fella in work has it for a while, always garaged never seen rain etc. I fell in love with her, and couldnt say no at the money he wanted:)

I also spotted some cool as **** cars around chester last week:

Went to the scrap yard, and in a corner, behind the crusher sits....

A Nissan Skyline R34 GTR V-Spec.

Turns out it was taken off some chavs by the bailiffs, they then realised it had been robbed, crashed and started to strip it.

Its going "Skidding" in poland. He means drifting I think lol

well thats rubbish, go and finish it! i've got an excuse because i'm spasticated now lol

i've had the CBR 2 years now, and it is stil rapid, in real world road riding you can easily keep up with a litre bike on a 400/600, you just need to ride it properly lol not sure if i can even ride properly yet with this stupid wrist though, so the bike may be off for good :(

anyway, show us pictures of the nova or gtfo lol

Well as im sure some of you know ive been mega busy with work, fixing peoples cars, bikes and some mobile plantlol

Ive also torn the c20let apart for a full rebuild for the new track project.

Anyways, back to lucy, shes still here, looking alright now, however its clear that shes been a rushed job in the past, im not happy with the paint in the engine bay, and a tiny 5mm bubble has appeared on the rear arch.

However, ill cover that in the next rebuild, as for now its fine:d

Right then, I have done a bit this month, with all my bolts going off for acid dipping and bright zinc coating.

Then I recieved a brand new Facet Red Top pump for the carbs.

Fallen out with Lucy ATM.

Turns out the front upper pannel was welded on by someone with 1 hand an clucoma (Like lewis lol)

So, new front upper pannel pulled out of the loft (Sad I have a pannel stash lol)

Engine bay and front pannel will all be sorted and welded/painted at my dads friends bodyshop. He has one of colin mcraes old rally cars in there, so knows his stuff. Propper old school lead fill sorta guy.

Anyways, bought a 3rd set of speedlines for the van, the plan is to have the van, the trailer and the nova all on speedlines lol

Bought the speedlines a bailey breather tank and some headlight protectors off scorge:)

Also aiming to buy the header tank, mocal oil cooler and harnesses off Rich:)

Topmounts appeard for my coilovers too, and some polybushes.

If your removing the front panel...... Id trial fit everything on the front end once a tack weld or two is holding the new panel in place. A lot of mk2's dont line up properly due to either non genuine panel replacements or not enough time spent aligning/trial fitting. Spoils the finished article and will drive you mad in the long run If it isnt spot on.

Cheers Nick, to me thats what I'd do aswell.

Appears the term "tradesman" means someone who just guesses lol

It's going into an old boy my dad knows, he's rebuilding one of mcraes old rally cars ATM, and does some seriously nice work. Did the bootlid on our jag, and it's amazing.

Going to have the engine bay repainted to a "show" standard, and then if funds allow a pair of quater panels and sills.

Then a full blow over in Audi abis White, or glacier:)

I'm sure she won't be as clean as yours nick, but won't be far off:)

I do fancy having a go, I did the rear panel in my old nova, but for this I'd rather let the old boy do it.

He's a professional, and whilst I can do pretty much anything, arty stuff isn't my thing.

Takes a lifetime to learn a trade, and it's best IMO to let someone pro do paint and body work!

Well, bit of an update minus pics!*

I've been busy sorting out a new daily Astra van, got it as a non runner and sorted the pump out and she's away again. However, the nova has received a small amount of love from me.

I've bought, and need to collect on the 25th and 26th of the month a ruck of parts.

Got, brand new passenger door, brand new bootlid and brand new passenger side sill, also bought 2 full genuine gm 1/4 pannels, another set of speedlines, headlight protectors and a brand new bailey breather tank!

Purchased megajolt light ignition system, and got to get that paid for and wired in thanks to Phillip on here!

Also got the rest of the parts for the carbs, just need a linkage now, and then I'm away.

Just finished my rose jointed gear linkage, been building it on my brakes and dinner times in work, I'm really pleased with it, and I've used the link arm from a mk3 Astra so avoid turning the plastic lug round, which IMO gives a nicer stick feel!

I've had the carpets up in the corners of the nova, and can report no rot at all, one scab of surface rust which has been wire wheeled, krust treated and then anti rust primered.

The friend of my dads who has the rallycar bodyshop is coming out this week to have a look see at the front end being sorted out so I can have absolutely perfect pannel gaps!

Aside from this, not that much to report really, apart from this small project has completely spiralled out of control into something that can only be described as building my perfect nova! This will be my first and last nova I build, so I'm doing it properly, as the ones I've had before have just been run about abuse toys lol.

Anyone got a drivers sill and door for me? Lol

Well, Matt here has been rather busylol

KTM is all done pretty much, engine rebuilt, back together, just got to wait for xmas for my new chain and sprockets off the mrs:d

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/3633a952.jpg

Moving onto the nova.

Mixed week to be honest, had a fella come round who is A**** on bodywork, and he pretty much crucified the nova.

Turns out the owner 2 owners ago crashed the car, yet kept it very quiet, so it was sold onto the owner before the fella I bought it off, the fella I bought it off built it all up, then randomly stripped it down, and I bought it.

Ive now been told the reason it was stripped was because he found out it was slightly twisted, and basically stitched me into it:roll:

However, not being one to give up easily, its going on the jig in this fellas unit, and will be pulled square, and all the pannels hung and gapped perfectly so im told:thumb:

So It started, big job on so to speak.

Dropped the engine on my own, so left it under the car so to avoid accidents like the shell fallin off stands etc.

Just been reading the latest updates. The owner 2 owners ago would of been Eastham and im pretty sure he never crashed it, if it had been banged then it would of been from the guy who had it before him years ago. I've wanted this shell since the first time i saw it around 5 years ago and im very surprised you're finding faults with it, think you must be a picky bugger lol

Either way though, im glad that you are clearly spending a bucket load of cash on this car, should be a minter once completed. Those new parts are pretty epic! Will look forward to it being finished, i knew i should of bought the shell when i had the chance :(

MattBrown
05-12-11, 12:06 PM
Yeah Lee, im unsure, it makes sense as the why both the previous owners mysteriously built it up, then stripped it down quite quickly.

Im not that fussed, its a 17 year old boy racers dream, its going to have had a hard life and some abuse.

Fortunately Ive got the funds to sort it out, all be it slowly as I keep spending on other toys lol

Small update is the daily van now sports the GSI kit, Prodrive skirts, 16" td wheels, 110mm drop, irmsher spoiler, estate rear bumper, boot trims and some Opel, opc badges and seat covers and a fancy Grille. Next mods are HIDs and DEPO headlights.

Ill get some pics of it on the weekend as I go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark lol

It amazes me how you get time to mess with all these toys inbetween cruising for c0ck and cottaging

Lets see something interesting

Hahahaha.

Absolutely nothing to report.

Sold a grille to liam, sending that tommorow, that's all I've done nova wise.

Get this new toy bought, then getting nova jigged soon, and then sills, 1/4s and pannels on, then painting:)

Bit of a well overdue update for you guys, Been busy over the last 6 months, ranging from riding the KTM, to buying a race quad, saving a genuine silk gsi from death, and a few conversions and silly things to boot.

Right then, way back at xmas time, had a week off between xmas and new year, so thought “lets redtop our toms corsa” well, I left him to his own devices for much of the build, infact all I did was source and build the shafts and do all the required wiring.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/60e738a6.jpg

That was his choice of rocker cover etc, much to my disappointment, I thought he would have made it look tidy.

Next task thrown at us was a friend who has owned novas before, swapped his bora diesel for a Genuine Silky GSI, now ive seen some sites on the road, but this one just about takes the pishh for being dodgey. 11 months MOT, taxed etc and “mint” its his own fault for not looking at the car, as anyone with eyes would have ran far, far away! But its all good, all welded up and saved from death, in about 10 hours worth of welding and panel fab.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/d173b9e8.jpg

Clearly obvious rust is well set in here.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/7eea7692.jpg

The bulkhead had split with the power of the R1 Carbed XE (Which was timed up wrong, and the dizzy far too advanced) but it was all sorted in the end.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/1f267735.jpg

Few days later and this came into my local yard, GSI bumpers, skirts, spoiler and a few smalls where relieved by myself. It was really, really clean, and for some reason the MOT tester said it needed welding around the turrets (blatently didn’t) and funnily, the MOT fella wanted to buy the car so the story goes…

Seeing as a group of us have bought quads to hoon around on, I wanted in on the action, heres a pic proving that a Yamaha Blaster does go in an astra van! (My mates, I have a banshee)

Some boxing day foolery:)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/7f6cc0ca.jpg

So wet it was unreal, good days ragging though:)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/a47b3d74.jpg

Think she needs a clean!

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/c4fb8c6b.jpg

That’s Better:)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/3633a952.jpg

I wanted in on the quad action, so I found a Yamaha Banshee Race Quad forsale in north wales, tatty, and not selecting the gears properly, not an issue for me, so a deal was done, the numbers etc checked with the police, all came up clean so home she came:)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/f27e4c3f.jpg

Put it on the rolling road and she pulled 60bhp, its fair to say “wild” is an understatement, this thing is seriously fast.

Next to add to the toyshop is a CRF450R, on a 2007, for £1600 It had to come home to play.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/d2447f7f.jpg

I have also moved into a unit, and found a genuine large light up Lancia Sign from a 1980s dealers forsale on ebay, so had to have it, looks ace hung on the wall.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/07c40049.jpg

Then I was bored, so after a quick chat to Dom Hodge (Mk1 red SR, and various other Vauxhalls) He asked if I could fit a c20let to his nova, which was done in a matter of weeks, the engine bay was painted orange, and the shell was collected behind the trusty tow bus.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/4d196b31.jpg

Then the build went ahead, everything painted and done really tidy IMO.

I needed something to keep me happy, so I went and bought a z20let, all the wiring etc required and was going to convert the van, then had a realisation about fuel etc, and kept it diesel. So the z20let went to a new home (Corsa C)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/92480d5e.jpg

Next I got offered a vitara cheap, so thought why not, theres an ex mod base near me, with some fairly silly hills etc, and I took it out a few times, although mr plod wasn’t too impressed about the towing situation (Its legal, by about 15kgs)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/9c024f0b.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/b4baed2e.jpg

I got hold of a senator/carlton GSI dash for my nova, but decided that I preferred the standard GSI dials so It got sold on.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/99325662.jpg

Next thing the banshee is misbehaving, not running right and being a pig.

Then the engine locks up solid.

Ohh dear,

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/3cb8ff56.jpg

370cc rebore, new forged pistons, and the gearbox sorted, now running 70ish bhp.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/a1583b35.jpg

Doesn’t look bad at all, infact the clutch basket had shattered into 7 pieces, and jammed all inside the side casing.

MattBrown

Next weekend out, and bang, my mates blaster locks up solid.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/456eb545.jpg

Stripped, new ported and polished barrel, high comp piston, LRD race pipe, big carb, reeds and 1mm taken off the head. This thing flys now!

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/961631ce.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/75746555.jpg

Then I went an bought a Chevette for some RWD madness, however I soon got bored, and sold this on to OswestryAutoworks on here (Phill).

The shell has never been welded, and doesn’t need it, needs the arches tidying up and a blow over.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/f97ef84a.jpg

Next was something to keep me entertained whilst I can’t get at the nova, another van, for track use and for santapod etc.

EPIC fail collecting it, loaded it up etc, and my van wouldn’t start, 200 miles from home, with no AA, and a £450 bill to get me home (Not impressed)

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/949d62db.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/024cb202.jpg

Anyway, this new van has been built over the last 2 weeks, ready for pvs, a “Good” “no smoke or rattles” engine was purchased, this then smoked its cock off, so no pvs.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/5571cf2d.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/87f59989.jpg

5 stud went on, 320mm vec GSI brakes, SRI turbo wheels painted and on, brand new GSI bumper, GSI rear bumper, Smoothed boot, GSI skirts, Side Strips, basically everything I like on the vans.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/1df9b0d3.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/b1b3eb8f.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/399f2a0c.jpg

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx16/MattBrown9600/9ddcddb4.jpg

And that’s pretty much the last 6 months, I couldn’t bring the van to PVS as it was smoking like mad on idle, suspected stem seals, so the guys at autovaux sorted me out with some genuine ones for £8. Happy days.

No progress at all on the nova, but within a month it will be down to my unit, and then some serious work taking place.

Hope this wasn’t too boring!

Matt.
