i think you can blame the legendary richard grant, he of the badly made rear spoilers that didn't quite actually fit anything properly... it was more an early 80's thing...

Because they started on sports cars etc that actually looked ok with them:

Then made it onto hatchbacks that look gash with them, like M3 mirrors.

Reminds me a bit of the Cavalier rear panel that extends the lights allll the way along the tail panel. Mmmm, 80s lol
