View Full Version : Am I getting old, or is 'dubstep' just dire?

Stuart

For some reason we have a USB stick with some sort of dubstep album on it and aside from the chase and status tracks (which just seem like a garage/anthem hybrid), its all just the same noise over and over again.... how the fook is the same overdriven synth classed as 'music'

Or have I just got old? :(

It sounds like it's been created on a Casio keyboard from the '80's lol

I suppose if your a teenager it's probably the dogs, personally I think it's crap lol

On the whole I agree with you, dubstep is pretty crap. I like a lot of the crossover DnB stuff though.

I also despise garage lol. I hated it when all of that DJ Luck and MC Neat, Pied Piper crap was out!

Some awesome dubstep imo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S35THmZD_E www.youtube.com/watch?v=85wgzj8hZyg www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cxgao2rYZw

Those are three of my favourites, and are generally an exception to the rule. lol

Not just you, I'm an avid listener of Liquid Drum and Bass. Dubstep is literally the same old shoite wobble bass rythm over various vocal track samples.

The fanbase then determine how good a song is by how "filthy" it is, by "filthy" see; most shrill/noisy/painful synth+bass noise the wobble bass track is.

Liquid DnD blows me away! Always been a fan of the chill out stuff, right from back when I would happily stick Robert Miles - Children album on, lights down and just blaze one out lulz. :)

I'm far more into that than the dirty/filthy/heavy stuff on the whole.
Just knocked up a sweet MP3 compilation about an hour ago. Would have been nice to have for yesterday evenings road trip, but oh well! lol

stu, welcome to my world, pull up a chair, make yourself comfortable.....

the conversation i usually hate having with youf about music is that i'm old enough to remember the songs that have been sampled for this new urban shyte....
i actually tried to listen to that thing on radio 1 last night all about the origins of dubstep etc..... and it was going fine till some tw@t started playing the noise a fax makes when it rings your phone by mistake..... so i gave local radio a chance instead.......

now please, can the more cultured youfs please enlighten me... is that crap that every street dance group (if they did that in my street, the co-op lorry would hit them) try to dance to on britain's got talent ?

All I really listen to is stuff from the 90's, from dance to rock music, although there is some 60's-80's rock on my playlist too, but the majority of it is 90's dance.

I will be honest, I do like Nero-Guilt, mainly for the video but the song is quite good.

I was listening to Pete Tong and Judge jules on the Iplayer earlier and the kind of stuff they play hasnt really changed in 15 years, its excellent dance/trance/big room chooons.

I too tried to listen to the symphony thing last night and I just didnt get it.... yes the orchestra did well playing the tangable sounding parts of the tracks but the other stuff that I can only assume was stolen from Space Invaders just made it wrong.

I quite like some of it...

An old school friend of mine Terry Lennard (DJ Hatcha for those in the know) had his own Garage/Drum & Bass Vinyl shop (Big Apple Records) in Croydon years ago and when the Garage scene started to die off, he got into making his own beats and Dubstep was created from a mix of Drum & Bass & Garage. His also just done a album compilation - 100% Pure Dubstep.

He now DJ's every tuesday night/wednesday morning Live on Kiss FM at 1am for an hour. Anyone who's into Dubstep, have a listen tonight...

I still dont get how its a mix of garage and drum n bass.
Garage was good, some drum n bass is ok for 10mins then it gets boring, dubstep is just garbage.
Honestly,i can only say i dont like a single dubstep track ive heard yet,and i like most types of music.

it is a bit interesting this has been brought up; as ive spent what must be a year or two unable to decide if i like dubstep or not - i do like some tracks; have downloaded say 5 or 6 dubstep tracks during those 18 or so months.. not many really is it.. I think theyre just the more 'pop-ish' dubstep rather than the dark repeatative stuff..
One does have to be in the right mood for them though; i went to a 'dubstep' themed night at our local nightclub few months back n kinda hated it..
Does also have to be said, decent amps, speakers, subs and recorded quality is a must.

i agree with the dub-step..isnt my taste either altho do play an odd track here and there due to being a dj.

being an east london boy, garage and jungle was,and still is my main music aswell as d'n'b.

when i do club nights/partys i still get asked for all the old skool club classics or old skool garage tracks..

everyone has different taste, born in different places, different era's..
musics there to enjoy..and i make the most of it

Commercial dance music follows the substances used on the "club scene"

Proper old skool dance music as we know it (90's) as an example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlHcJYFf7Pk) followed a strict pattern of uplifting vocals the occasional piano riff and a nice solid bouncy bass line. "House" music if you will. This seemingly teemed up with the "euphoric" and "loved up feeling" MDMA (The Base for all Ecstasy tablets) and similar provided.

The club scene followed this path for a couple of decades till the early 00's

This was when commonly used drugs such as Ketamin and GB and more dark and dirty drugs hit the club scene. This was when you got your First Commercial Borderline Dub Step Tracks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-hjN5hXTM8) and that stemmed the downfall into a bass heavy dirty no need to dance just stand and vibrate era of clubbing.

I see dubstep as an evolution of miaow miaow (the latest UK drug craze)

It's a shame really, But Stu let me re assure you, your not old, It's just the drug taking clubbing youths are now on chemicals that inhibit the ability to dance or communicate.
Instead of ripping their shirt off and bouncing around dancing for hours to uplifting music hugging everybody (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1yABzXVkMw).

The Human Traffic days are over my friend! :( (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df2hIxHKd_c)

**edit, I do by no means promote the use of illegal substances, This is merely an observation as an ex DJ of how the music of night clubs shifted***

This conversation was had by many DJ's I used to hang around with and was the turning point of the demise of many a good DJ that worked in nightclubs where substance abuse was prolific and often unable to be controlled by the in house security or the police. I for one hung up my headphones when the music I enjoyed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9Xtvj_JVSM) from a consistent non chemical perspective was no longer as impacting and "roof raising" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JepU8E_7Ac&feature=related) to the crowds as the repetitive durge that is currently played in many nightclubs and only getting worse. Remember peeps the music in the charts is what is played in the clubs beforehand.
