View Full Version : Is it just nova brakes?

Long story short. New copper lines, fittings, braided hoses, GTE servo, Astra GTE calipers with brand new discs and pads, new rear cylinders and shoes, new brake fluid and was bled 3 times with absolutely no air bubbles the 2nd and 3rd time.
Yet my brakes still feel weak? Don't get me wrong, they stop you but you have to push rather hard and doesn't properly "bite" until the peddle is half or more down?
Is this normal on a standard setup and am I expecting too much from the mk1 ?
have you tried new drums & shoes??? then get them adjusted up properly.
is the vac line from the inlet manifold connected? is the one way valve in good condition?
Your symptoms are very indicative of a duff servo, but if you have changed that it can only really be the hose and or valve

By what your saying the brakes are pretty **** unless you press really hard? Mine were the same, at first I thought the servo or m/cylinder was at fault but in the end all I needed to do was adjust the brake peddle in the car, after I did this then I got the same effect as pressing the pedal really hard but right at the top of the travel of the pedal, i.e you only needed to press very gently whereas before you needed to press very hard.

Took it for a 14 mile run tonight, they seemed to get sharper and sharper. Maybe just needed time to bed in. Everything is connected as it should be so that's not a problem.
Adjustment on the brake pedal, Didn't know you could do that on a nova? How did you do it mate, might help my situation.
It could just be me though, all will come clear in tomorrows mot lol.

You can adjust the pedal from inside, just take a look up at it and it's quite self explanatory. Made a world of difference to mine!

when fitting new disc and/or pad, brakes feel crap untill both surfaces have fitted to each other. Discs and pads dont come exactly smooth,so you wont be getting full braking force till they are bedded in.
even lairy spec track pads will be bed in within 100 miles (unless you have just done a non slowing down motorway run lol )

300 to 400 miles recomended bedding in time :thumb:

As above i would allow more time for them to bed in and then if they still arent any good then firstly check the rears to make sure they are adjusted enough, then try bleeding them through once more. quick test to see if its adjustment... press the brake pedal and then pull the handbrake up, if the pedal moves then adjustment is your problem.

disagree, but then I've got documents from mintex/pfb/Carbon Lorraine with the bedding in procedures and they all cover less than 100 miles... infact you can do it in about 10 miles if doing the job properly.
The only pads that ever claimed they needed 1K miles was some greenstuffs I used lol
My old TRD discs and pads also had a very short bedding in procedure as well, but they were also quite specific on how you do it. Normal driving on the road wouldn't suffice.
The yellowstuffs I just put on didn't say anything about it lol
