ok folks, i'm competing in the hinckley soap box derby (downhill timetrial) on sun 3rd july.
i've got to build a kart in 3 and a bit weeks.

so far, i'm getting a kids pedal kart to rob for bits, ie. steering/seat etc..

please pitch in any decent design ideas that you have.

i am going to try some big wheel/little wheel heavy/light tests before finalising the chassis, which will mostly be plyboard. it will be clad in a cardboard outer shell. personally, i'd love to make it nova shape simply cos of the straight lines involved, but i think a streamliner might be a touch more aerodynamic!!!!

pics to follow as things progress.

thanks. mike

sounds fun :p, whats the track like? how sharp are the corners? and what roughly speed do you think you will be traveling

You already have most of the component parts.

Just whack some wheels on and get balancing. lol

standing start with a push (i'm thinking of inviting baxter & then insulting him)lol , then its 180m down a 1 in 15 hill, with some sort of chicane. its basically straight thru the main shopping st of hinckley...

the whole idea is more for fun & to try & raise some cash for charity.

oh, & my 13 year old daughter is also having a go at driving too. her only previous experience is in my nova in the middle of a field....

push or a running start? If it's just a push I'm sure you could work out a way to 'chock' yourself against something and use your full body length to push off the start line?

well, until i find out on the day of the competition, i don't know... i was hoping to give it a bobsleigh type thing, but without the split pants..

me and wheelie bins do have some history..... but the problem is that hinckley council are running the event, so i don't think they'd be too happy if i used one of their bins.
