Basically,
I'm headed to Dorset in a few weeks.
According to googlemaps I've got a 154 mile journey to do.
Couple of different directions to take, one being an A road, the other being a motorway. Time difference between the 2 is about 40 minutes.
Which is the best route for fuel? The time it takes isn't really an issue
Anyone know the fuel economy of a 1200 carbed 12ST engined nova?? Obviously will be taking enough luggage for the week, for two people.
Google reckons it'll cost just over 30 quid....

Used to have a 12ST in my Nova. Regularly got 41 - 43 mpg in town :d On a motorway at steady speeds you should easily see high 40's may even hit mid 50mpg (assuming the engine is in good running condition with no problems).
I'd say best route for fuel would be motorway, more consistant speed of travel less chance of stop start (generalising as I'm not familiar with motorways in that area or their traffic etc).
m25, m3, m27, a31. cruise down there at 56 in with the wagons, and it'll be ok, as long as it doesn't rain, cos the spray will be awful..
there isn't a decent other road for you to use down there from your part of the world, i think they did them to confuse the germans in case of invasion.....

Christ I did 540 mile to my brimmed tanks keeping to 50-55 1.2 carb
Where abouts in Dorset and what day/time are you going?
Avoid the A31 from the M27 to Ferndown at "rush hour", Friday afternoons or Saturdays. If you're going to West Dorset you might even be better off taking the 303 to Salisbury or even Yeovil.
If the traffic is good I reckon £20-30 is a fair estimate, assuming you can hit 45mpg average.

he has already mentioned a travelling companion... so a 5am start is a no-no...
then there will be the miriad of drink/toilet stops, it is going to be a long steady trip...

Headed near Yeovil actually, I have the choice of the M27 or the A303.
On a monday as it happens.

It's only my girlfriend and she will leave when I do otherwise she will have to catch a train, seeing as it is her parents house I'm going to for the week, and we will be leaving around mid afternoonish as we have a wedding to go to in the morning.
Oh and we shall have refreshments etc
I can piss out a window if needs be, and I'm sure I can find her a funnel lol
Basically just trying to get an average cost etc, so I can save some pennies from work etc.
303 should be fine on a Monday afternoon.

Cool beans.
Heads up on better location, it's a place called Wonston just outside a place called Hazelbury Bryan.
EDIT: (Map reading fail) need to turn off the A303 somewhere and follow a load of roads down lol
Might be digging out a sat nav me thinks.
So you saying that way is better than said motorway?
A303 > Salisbury > A354 to Blandford > A357 towards Sherborne/Sturminster.
Or A303 > Salisbury > A30 to Shaftesbury > Henstridge > Sturminster. You could take a slight deviation up and down Zig Zag Hill whilst you're there lol
