View Full Version : My first car...
I recieved this little 1 litre saloon for my birthday from Mr Burgo :d
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/41160_10150257462335577_692945576_14451895_2648353 _n.jpg
I have quite a bit planned for it but being as i've never even had a car before (I can't even drive yet!) I will be needing lots of help getting it sorted. I plan to get stuck in as much as possible though! :)
Some of the jobs being done are;
-Brown interior being put in
-The chairs being changed to tilty ones
-Engine being converted to a 1.2
-The fuel lines and tank need changing
-Wheels are being changed and will be made to 5 stud
-Paint the door cards
-A general polish and tidy up
-Replace the indicator lights
-Sort out the dents
-Put a stereo in
There are more but i'm too tired too think lol
So far we've put the brown interior in and yesterday I had much fun taking part a seat and replacing it with tilting ones from Burgos estate. The seats were also re covered with brown material.
When I have a spare few moments i'll add more pictures and i'll think of more jobs that need to be done.
I can't wait to get stuck in! :thumb:

Looks good:)
How old are you? As a first car with a declared engine conversion will be horrendous on insurance won't it?
If it was me, I'd leave it as a 1.0 for now, get a years ncb, then go for the engine you choose.

FLOL dont lie,how many times did we all say that to you???:tard: lol
Looks a good base to start from, more pics are needed

21 :)
I'm pretty sure when we checked out what the insurance would be like roughly it wasn't overly bad.
Tbh at the moment the engine is the last job on my list...actually getting driving is my number one priority lol
Very cool 1st car.
Plans sound good :)

Do as I say, not how I do lol
Just something to bear in mind, for the extra 10bhp, is it worth the cost?
If was an xe, now that's different! :)
As said though, looks a good base to start with:)
Great car :thumb:

What's your future plans then for the saloon beastie :d

i got my first car as a present to....
but i got a classic mini when i was only 13 lol
Personally I would do everything on the list bar the engine change, only because you might as well wait and get a slightly more powerful engine, even if its just for better cruising speeds!
Looks a nice and clean shell though.

the engine change is down to the fact no matter what you do the 1L will only do 30mpg, where as the 1.2 will do 45mpg plus it has 15 more horses as well

For now she's just going to be tidied up and used as my daily. Once Daniel is a bit older, I have more time and i'm more able to work on the car alone i'll probably do a lot more to it :d

Mine got 46mpg on a run to colin smiths and back.
Lean the air/fuel screw off some, and advance the timing slightly.
Granted I was sat at 60, but its still good going imo:thumb:
matt, trying to teach burgo something he doesn't know about small vauxhall engines is a hard thing to do.
i have driven both, i'd have the 12st over the 1.0ohv easily.
Oh right I see, i thought they were similar in performance and MPG
the 1.2 is quite nippy...the 1.0 is not.

Speed doesn't particularly bother me, especially as i'll have my littlen in the back :)
just wait till the scary playgroup mums try to tell you that a huge people carrier with 2t of baby junk in the boot is sooo much safer than your loon.....
jack, you should try reasoning with a scary playgroup mum....
and people carriers are 'safe' because they are designed to pass crash tests... as opposed to actually being safe.

I've already been told by grandma that I need a big sturdy car as it doesn't look very safe

Over a quarter mile there was about 6 foot between mine and cooltigers.
Both had just a backbox.
Granted the carb ones are slightly faster, but after 10 minutes you'll be bored weather it a 1.0 or a 1200
Some more pictures :) I'll try and get some of the engine when I have a spare hand

sorry to join in luke, but matt, if that is all the evidence you have, then i pity you... a carb 1.2 is way faster than a spi 1.2 and a 1.0 in a straight line. but on bendy roads the 1.2 carb simply loves to rev, so it is miles ahead.

Well I had a text from Burgo this afternoon saying "you can paint them sill covers in the garden if you want"...
Cue...me panicking lol. But I got stuck in and despite having never used a can of spray paint before I don't think I did overly bad. Another coat will be added a little later.

Looks good for a first attempt!
Not exactly to count james standards but good enough by the time ive had the flap wheel on it. More importantly no more wet carpets
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/DSC08119.jpg
Stripped as much off the engine as i could to still leave it in a running state
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/DSC08121.jpg
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/DSC08120.jpg
After putting the peddle box and steering column back in the red one i pulled that off the drive so i could then turn the estate round in the garage. With that done i started stripping the engine ready for dropping tomorrow.
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/DSC08356.jpg
And then the same now the red one is back on the drive and facing the estate. pretty much just the exhaust and then its ready to come out
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/DSC08357.jpg
I also hoovered out the inside before refitting the carpets, sill trims, seat runner covers, rear cards, rear seat and belts. i also painted the rear seat brackets and floor under the rear bench.
No doubt will be pics of that tomorrow though
Is it plastic/vinyl paint? Real easy to use tbh, just use very light coats, no need to make it gloss up :) Looks like someone has been at some door cards too lol

It's coming to PV so i'd assume it is :d
well the plan for saturday was to get the 1.2 into the red one, i knew how much work this was so got brother burgo to come help me. in total we spent three and half hours on it working our asses off but got it done.
we started by dropping the engine out of the estate, this was made a little more tricky without an engine winch but was easy enough.
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0192.jpg
with that done we got to removing the 1L this was even easier due to having more room around it to work
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0194.jpg
as if we didnt have enough to do i wanted to clean the engine bay as well lol as it looked like this
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0195.jpg
with that done we got to lobbing in the 1.2
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0196.jpg
and got the suspension all bolted up

Thankyou, Burgos done most of the work so it's more his project than mine at the mo :)
well another busy day today, nasty job of the tank swap done and the paintwork mopped up. anywho
started by getting it jacked up high enough to work under
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0245.jpg
supported properly obviously lol
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0244.jpg
then beam dropped, exhaust off, handbrake undone and then tank off
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0247.jpg
new and old, tis rather annoying having to change it for one tiny return hole
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0246.jpg
and then all fitted again
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0250.jpg
and then i fettled with more bits in the bay
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0249.jpg
it was at this point i decided i was bored of dirty work so decided to get the mop out instead, i got as far as doing the n/s rear quarter and door when tan came out and asked to do the rest. so i got her a chair as shes a short **** and told her what to do
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0248.jpg
to be fair she did pretty well considering shes never done it before

cotten braid over the clutch cable ?

Paint work looks really good, keep up the good work folks.

cotten braid over the clutch cable ?its a 1L shell, protects the cable from the heat of the exhaust.
the shell isnt that clean at all, it'll be getting a new front panel, new wings, new sills, new arches and lower rear quarter panel bits eventually lol.
having said that the paint is very good, i would be tempted to say its not original but it has the original little ok stamps
oh and the 1L will be lobbed back in to get it to billing
General Baxter
19-06-11, 12:58 PM
its a 1L shell, protects the cable from the heat of the exhaust.
oh yeah duhhhh
time for a pretty epic update. i once again dragged me bruv round to help me get sheet loads of work done. the plan as to lob the 1L back in and get it running, which we achieved eventually lol.
first discovery was that we required to put the 1l box back in, pain in the **** vauxhall making the f10 different between the 1L and 1.2. so i set sam on this, he did this by undoing the bottom ball joints and hub nuts then swing the box one way then the other to drop the driveshafts down past the bottom arms and tie rods.
whilst he was doing this i remembered i had a 1.2 ohv kicking around and figured may as well lob that in instead. this however required swapping the clutch and flywheel, alternator and brackets, exhaust manifold and had to swap the bottom pulley as it was bent.
with both them done and the 1L gearbox in we set up the engine hoist and strapped up the 1.2, at this point sam enquired as to where the engine mount was and where it bolted to, it was only at this point i noticed there was no where for the engine mount on the block to bolt to. que much laughing and swearing lol
so put all the flywheel and everything back onto the original 1L. this took no time at all and we soon had the 1L dangling in the air ready to drop in, it actually went in extremely easily which was nice after the little mishap.
we then set about connecting the bare essentials to see if it ran, with this done the magic moment of turning the key.....nothing  feck. tried ****ing the starter and still nothing, got the tester out and all was correct. tried then shorting the permo feed and starter feed on the starter and still nothing so we whipped the starter off. this is when we noticed another terminal, grab another battery and check if this is the correct one and sure enough it is. lob it back in, connect it up correctly and try again and with abit of cranking to get the fuel up she fired straight up and ran better than before it came out lol. with that done we set about connecting everything else
engine back in

Daniel lending a hand
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0270.jpg
and checking it was in correctly
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0273.jpg
with that all done we set about the cosmetics. in other words we bolted on the bonnet, headlights, new indicators and front bumper. then we bled the brakes and got the wheels on and brought it back down to earth
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0279.jpg
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z361/T_Fraser/My%20car/SAM_0281.jpg
and then jumped in to see if it would move and stop, of course it did but we noticed somehow we had major toe out  the rack and ride height hasnt been changed so whats going on there im not sure, still nothing a tape measure and the clothes line pole couldnt fix lol
a few day previous to all this i decided to try and spend an hour or two improving the front panel a bit so it looks better until we fit the new one. now bare in mind this is still that same front panel that once looked like this
