How long should it take a n00b to completely strip a bike down to bare frame, clean all components and reassemble again?
If you have all the correct tools a day or two
Depends what you mean by strip down ? You servicing suspension components as well ?
Two days, how much you drinking whilst doing it lol
If youre fairly competent with your hands/tools and have a fair idea what youre doing then it shouldnt take more than a day:thumb:
I like to do a proper job :)
No point rushing it as being stuck miles from anywhere ain't funny
Depends if your one of those gay mtb'ers that has a bike you push to the top and roll down, due to 9inch travel suspension, then who cares if you have gears or not, if your a proper biker that likes to ride uphill as well you'll want a fully working bike, hence I take my time rebuilding
Fair one, im talking hardtail with V brakes, proper bike :d
Me and my mates used to strip clean and grease our bikes at least once a month when younger, would take about a day with us stopping for cake and to help mince the others on their bikes lol

It gets ridden. Aggressively. Thing is, I've only had it a few weeks and I've not done anything to it. It just sat in my mates shed for 3yrs prior. So to get all the hardened gunk off, and free up the brakes better and so I can fix the gearing. But generally just a tart up so I can polish the frame etc.
I've not done this before, but I'm using it to commute at the same time so dont wanna start if I wont get it done in time. Don't have any specific bike tools either...lol
Edit: Hardtail with V brakes all the way :thumb:
Ahh right your a proper biker :) hardtail ftw
I used to love stripping my bike down, then along came nova's ...... lol
Go to your nearest bike shop and buy a crank puller, a decent set of allen keys and tbh thats about as much as you will need really as you shouldnt need to split your chain as you can just leave it danging on the stay, you should be able to remove pretty much everything with the allen keys if its a decent/recent bike, if youre only wanting to clean it thoroughly then you wont need a cassette tool or chainwhip, nor a BB tool:thumb:

It's a 'retro' bike. 96 GT Backwoods. Allen keys are something I have, crank puller I'll have to look into. It's basically a good clean up yeah and tighten the brakes n sort out gears etc.

Niiiice, you will also want a pair of pliers to adjust your cables, if theyre old ones then use my old trick, buy a new rear brake cable (inner and outer) and the same for the rear gear cable, then replace both, and chop down the old rears, to fit both fronts:d
Oh and crank puller (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=10181):thumb:
Once you done it a few times it takes my about 2-3 hours, just make sure you got the right tools for the job as it saves damages/time
