Just browsing a Honda forum when I stumbled upon someone poking at the rust in their sills.

http://www.hondacivicforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=17551&start=60

Suffice to say, Nova owners are somewhat more thorough when it comes to tackling rot. lol

"And here's the rear arch patched and the sills reconstructed:"

That was enough to seal, but I wanted some proper underseal to prevent further problems.

Omg, he wants to prevent further problems but hasnt chopped any of the rot out:eek:

how can none of them know how wrong that is. a sill is a vital structural part

I've got an old AA car maintenance book, and its guide to repairing rotten sills involves no welding of course, just chicken wire and filler.

Its funny hearing people talk about their cars back in the 60's and 70's, paper mache panels and important parts like wheels falling off all the time were the norm it seems. Perhaps its for the best everyones not an amatuer mechanic on their cars these days...

get your rear seats and boot carpets out and waxoyl those repairs from the inside. do the same to the inside of the sills. its a bit of a pain but its worth the effort, will stop the rot coming back. mine was like yours but ended up replacing the rear part of the sill completely. worrying part is the rot gets through to where the trailing arm mounts, so its well worth spending a bit more time and knowing its all safe!!

lol

Nothing like a bit of ally thrown into the mix to speed up the corrosion process ;).

Expanding foam, Vauxhall used to use it after welding the B pillars on early Corsa B's when they cracked lol

Seriously, a shocking repair that will prob not get picked up by an MOT tester.
What a muppet, if that gets sold on and it gets involved in a bad accident, god help the new owner!

lucky its not a vtec model, so much power it would twist the chassis on launch

The fact he has spend money on things like coilovers etc when the car is a rot box!

Looking at it it won't get picked up as its covered by the side skirts so they will never see what's behind it.

lol when the VTEC kicks in the rivets on the sill will pop out under the strain!

Just looking at the rust repair.. proper job that, right up until the point were you forgot to replace what was once metal with metal. Does it not cross your mind that most of the cars structual integrity is now lost?lol

Get him told. Shame there has been no replies yet:thumb:

Ironically, with all the time and effort involved in that repair it would have actually been easier to weld a new sill in..lol

Mark
25-05-11, 02:29 PM
**sigh** Have I done something to you that I am unaware of for you to spend your first 3 posts attacking the rust repair on my car..?
I am aware how extensive the rust is.. and if it continues to worsen I'll be buying a new shell in good condition for buttons and transferring all my mods over to it. But as it stands I'm happy with it. I believe it's structurally sound, maybe not as much as it was out the factory, that's a given, but enough for me to feel comfortable driving it for the time being. At the end of the day, I'm driving it and if I'm comfortable with that I don't see an issue. Flies through it's MOTs tbh

Jesus fecking henry.....Not a clue!

This is all very humours. When vtec kicks in the chassis twists.... epic statment.

Im sorry you and others got girly and saw this as argumentative, but its not. Merely cruising the web and this was presented to me. My statements maybe bold but it is ones of truth and common sense/knowlegde. More to the point, if there was someone with vehicle savvy on here do you not believe that someone should of put across that what action was taken in repairing said car was inadequate, cant tell me that this site is populated by the ignorant surely. Even with a sense of logic someone can see that its wrong, we're not living in the 70's where we cruised around in mini's and capri's Fred Flintstone stylie. At the end of the day, its down to his/her safety, worst case and hopefully it were never to happen but how would that car fair in a side swipe...? Fair point i believe. Please tell me if you think otherwise,

Regards Craig

You have to treat civic owners like little kids, your being really mean to them.
