how do i pull the damper out of the sturt?

When you say pull the damper out of the strut do you mean extend it or actually remove it?

extend it so i can refit the top mont and spring top

Have you compressed the spring down? the piston sounds like its at the top already if it wont move any further.

well i only wanted to pull out to check for damage , and i can only move it a inch

if the spring is off, then put the nut back on, then pinch it in a vice & push & pull on it. if the spring is on & under tension, the quickest way is to stick it back on the car & bounce on it.

or soften the damper and it should pull up no problems
