really struggling to get a good gear change. I can either have no reverse and fifth gear or reverse but no fifth gear. Ive tried setting the linkage in reverse on the box and on the gear stick and also tried doin the same in fifth. Ive also tried setting it just to the right of central neutral. Some one please help lol. What gear linkage does everyone else use? Whats the best to get? It is a new linkage i have but its really gettin me mad now lol. Please help some one! Oh, Ive also tried to use the lockout pin method0or What ever you wanna call it when you put a drill bit it the holes.

ok. i did this at the weekend with a mate on a corsa. should be similar =. was an F20.

we undo the clamp bolt on the join. locked out the stick with a screw driver.
and then on the gearbox, on the selector turret, the piece you can push in and pull out. if your over the engine bay looking down, twist the UJ towards the right as if you were going to go into first and hold it. then get a mate to do up the linkage.

He means the one on the linkage that connects to the selector turret

do you mean have i turned it around by accident before fitting or is it something you should do?

was the car originally a 4 speed?

If so, you need to cut off the lug on the shifter inside teh car (under the rubber gaiter)

I had the same problem, at the bottom of the gear stick there is a white lug thing, i had to chop a bit off (I cut a little bit off at a time from the right hand side) to allow the stick to go over and get 5th.

1- Get under the car and undo the bolt that holds the shifter to the linkage

2- Go to the engine make sure the gear selector on the gearbox (U-shape thing) is in neutral, then turn it left and remove that black plastic thing in the gearbox and put a 5mm drill bit in there to lock the selector in place

3- Get someone in the car and make them hold the gearknob as far left as possible and in between 1st and reverse

4- Go back under the car and tighten up the bolt you loosened in stage one

5- Take out the drill bit and put the plastic bit back

Should work then

[QUOTE=Mieran]1- Get under the car and undo the bolt that holds the shifter to the linkage

The bolt is on top, not underneath. (I made the same mistake)

a know i can get R,1,2,3,4 but the shifter woant go over far enough to engauge 5th gear.

how does the rubber gaiter come off the gear shifter?

does it just pull upwards or is it a centre console out job?

or.....under the car there is a panel that comes off underneath the shifter, do i access it there?

Just tug it from the inside - its not bolted/clipped etc

You will see the lug straight away - it will be hitting the car body when you try and select the 5th position...
