hi guys, i'm planning on wrapping my sportex 4-2-1 manifold, but can anyone tell me if i have to coat the manifold with anything before i wrap it? or can i just apply the heat wrap straight on? cheers.
If its mild steel and your everyday car mate I wouldn't bother as it tends to crack the welds on the manifold as they get too hot.

yeah its my daily run about. just trying to tidy the look of my engine really. i'll probably just paint it with heat proof paint then, thanks very much.

really?
so pooting around town, will make it hotter then thrashing it around a track of rally stage?
i wrapped mine on the bare metal :)

imho bollocks....
Yes the welds cracked on one manifold I know about BUT it had a very very very very hard life for 6 years lol

the paint will come off in minutes, just wrap it

ok, just straight on?
Well, it did on our Fiesta we used to rally.
We had a 4-2-1 manifold (Ashley which to be fair are the same quality as Sportex) it caused the welds to crack on the reducers as I can only put it down to heat stress and holding in moisture if it gets wet.
Anyway if you must, wrap it then buy the spray stuff its silicone based and helps seal the wrap.
Don't worry if it smokes like chuff too when you start it up.
ANY manifold paint burns off within 10minutes, so id go with wrapping it.

even though my motors only a 1.3 8v?
yeah it will just burn off
it will be fine, but it looks a bit tatty after a while. buy the thinner, stronger wrapping mate, the thick stuff is like a woolley jumper and falls apart within a week.
make sure you get enough too, a 4-2-1 will need between 100 and 125 feet ime :thumb:

I soaked mine in water then wrapped up real nice and tight and still looks bob on.
when i done mine, i hardly used any, i think i bought a 30m and i have LOADS left. enough to do another manifold easily.
wana buy it off me lol. - £15
also soaked it in water. and it smoked like mentioned lol.

It was either 8foot wide or you wrapped it the mong way lol
I saw pics a few years back where someone managed to wrap the ENTIRE exhaust with 100foot of wrap because they thought you kept it flat and next to the previous piece rather than overlapping by 50%
is this the mong way,

if so, i couldnt get it in the gaps, and i didnt bother going any lower as my exhaust scrapes!

Ashley exhausts even recommend NOT to wrap there manifolds.
I know we did our rally car that used to get used 8 times a year maybe so didn't think it would be too bad. Think it cracked on the 6th event. Fair enough its different to road car but at the time it was only a bog standard CVH competing on a single stage rally 45 miles max with hour brake or something daft between stages.
If you look about any Mild steel manifold manufacture will recommend not to wrap as it will void the warranty.
Any ways it was only my 2 p's worth. :thumb:
Personally, for sake of it, and a proper pukka finish Id get it thermal coated.
BBQ paint don't burn off, Well it hasn't yet.
