View Full Version : Other Location for oil pressure switch?

Hi,

As you may know im putting a 1600 8v engine into a mini.

Since its such a tight fit, im going to have a problem with clearance around the oil pressure switch on the back of the oil pump.

Is there another location on the engine, or pump where i could take an accurate pressure reading from?

If not, does anyone know what size the thread is so i can buy a 90degree adaptor?

Thanks

Chris

there isn't anywhere else ot take it from. take the switch to a local hydraulic hose place, or try someone like europa? spares, they do kitcar stuff.

whereabouts are you?

Im in wokingham, not far from reading. :)

How do the other mini lads do it? I've seen that conversion a few times

see look at that, just fitting a vauxhall engine will make any car rot lol

He asked me how i was doing it lol, neither of us know.
Tbh me and ben have been sharing allot of info and were both stumped on this one.

Use a remote pressure sensor then.

I noticed there is an allen key type grub screw pointing up from the top of the pump, could the pressure not be read from there if i found a sender to fit?

just go to pirtek or similar & get a 90 deg union & small bore hydraulic pipe made up. remember to get the body of the sender adequately earthed.

That's the pressure relief valve iirc, do not read pressure from there. Remote switch is the way forward.

Remote switch is the way forward.

Exactly my thinking, and TBH, pretty obvious given the lack of space lol cant believe no one else seems to have mentioned it :wtf:

Yeah I know lol but what Im saying is cant believe no one else (even on the mini forum/s) though of it already :tard:

making up a pipe is beyond the experience of a lot of people, so they look for a kit to do something that isn't needed on anything except a mini with a gm engine..

Hit the nail on the head there mate

The reason i asked for the thread size was because i thought about doing a remote sender, but wasn't sure if it would actually work, due to changing the volume of oil around the sender etc.

Im perfectly happy makeing my own pipes etc, Ive made my own brake, clutch and fuel lines. oil pipes in aero-quip wont be any different, its just finding the thread size.

Might just see if i can get a brass 90deg fitting to bolt in and angle the sender away from the subframe, or just ditch the switch and pipe it directly to a mechanical guage in the dash...

Im sure its a BSP size but cant remember what size :S

try BP grassing 01234 709343 they do a kit to relocate the oil pressure switch for small block vauxhalls.

So does anyone have any idea on the thread size? im coming to the point where i need to know now so i can buy a remote T piece.

Cheers guys.

irrc its m12x1.5 pitch on these switches could prob get a hose made up with a banjo fitting on it save more space youll get it a tighter bend to the pump housing

Thats exactly what im thinking. :)

Tweeks site recons its M14 x1.5 but it doesnt seem right, would be nice if someone could confirm 100%

Demon tweeks sell a pressure switch which i could fit, either 15 or 25psi pressure before turning the light off.

id be prity sure its a m12 ill try check there now for ya should have one round handy

LOL, if you try BP grassing 01234 709343 they do a kit to relocate the oil pressure switch for small block vauxhalls. You wont have to mess about just bolt in on!

Have you got a picture of that kit then?

Im not convinced anything off the shelf will do the job, its pretty tight for space.

No I dont have a picture. Basically a Banjo with a relocation pipe going to a suitable adapter. There are a lot of autograss cars that have the same issue with the vauxhall engine, hence why they do them.
