Im wondering would it be better to steam clean and paint the box or just get it sand blasted back to the original look.
Dont want the paint to peel off, has anyone painted a box before? does it last and if i put my grubby mits on does it stain?

I think a steam clean and a quick sand over with wet n dry will be a nice enough finish to leave as it is or to then paint it. I say paint it; itll look shinyier, unless u polish the 'box but i doubt you wanna do that.
If you paint it, try heat-resistant or fuel resistant laquer - should help reduce/stop flaking, both paint coming off and onto your grubby mits.
Its a nightmare trying to get dirt out of all the little corners, I would use a pressure washer or something like that
alot of patience...i used petrol with a paintbrush to get in the lil corners and used a scratchy pad to finish the clean down.
then used high temp paint

That is a mint looking box!
I only ask as i have a shot blasters near me and they will do it for £10 but painting does look good but wondered what the durability is like.
I used alloy wheel abrasive cleaner on mine (be careful around the seals) brought it up well! This is after one going over.

I used lots of degreaser then wire wheeled it
Painted it in etch primer then smooth Hammerite from cans
When I put the 1300 turbo lump in I'll get someone to paint a spare White with a gun tho
