View Full Version : Steering Cracking/Clicking Noise
Hello,
On the weekend I changed my front wheel bearings, since then Ive noticed my steering feels lighter turning right than left.
Also there is a clicking kind of noise when I turn the wheel either left or right sometimes, usually when moving the wheels from straight to a side.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Many Thanks.

i had this on my td found i ripped my cross member to bits,
check its not rotted thru
does it click when stationary or moving? if its when moving it could be a cv joint
Only when moving, i tested when stationary no noises. Is it bad to drive with the car like this?
its not the best lol, have any of your cv boots came loose or split?
does the clicking get faster as you pull away?
Its only when I turn the wheel it clicks so it depends on how quick i turn to the speed of the clicking.
I havent checked the cv boots I will on the weekend
have someone lie under nearth while turning the steering to try n figure out where its coming from
a long screwdriver touching the cv joint with the other end to your ear helps when trying to find out the source
Its only when the car is moving so I dont know how someone will be able to get underneath lol
aright like i said check the cv boots for splits or if they have slid off
dry joints can make clicking noises when turning
also did you tighten up the hub nut to the correct torque and put the split pin back in?
Yes I did, although I dont know what you mean to the correct torque lol
stage 1 - tighten to 100Nm / 74 lbf ft
stage 2 - back off nut slightly then tighten to 20Nm / 15 lbf ft
stage 3 - tighten 90 degrees and fit split pin
C.V joint will be worn so the balls in there will be clicking so it'll need replacing.
yeah like damo says it will be the CV joint
my gf's sturbo does this but apparently someone said its here driveshaft and not the cv joint lol
ill let her buy a new driveshaft lol
Cheers guys I'll order a new one
