View Full Version : welding inner arches
how is best to reconstruct the rear inner arches? mine are proper manky and as they are curved, and i've got to cut back so far, I can see its going to be a right mare to make them out of sheet. any tips?
they look like this

flat sheet bent round to make a "tub" and get rid of the double skin on the arch lip.
I cut mine a little higher than the rust and tacked it to the outer arch. Your rot looks a little high to do that tho, so maybe get a cheap pair of arch repair panels and use them to fabricate new inners? (Heard of people doing this before)
most folk use an outer repair section for the inner part too,

Mark: how do you mean get rid of the double skin? you mean not atatch the two bits together?

Instead of having the usual double skin that sucks up water and rots out, you cut away all the crap on the inner on a neat circle, and just go straight out with a flat sheet, like a tubbed arch. Weld that to the outer and you then have a single skin arch less prone to rotting out in future. Or even weld the flat sheet and then grind away the rot up to the new inner arch.
ah i see, that sounds like a proper good idea, I'll be giving that a go, thanks :thumb: have some green
I would use outer repair panels tbh mate
You'll have enough metal to use on them, I've repaired worse rust than that with them
There cheap too, you'll end up with it looking more factory as well
Here's a couple of pics what was done to my old shell

I have the same problem can does anyone have a tutorial given that this must be a very common problem, can anyone email me some how 2 pictures to shaunhirst@aol.com
there are some pictures of how i did mine on my project thread, theres a link in my signature.
its hard to do a tutorial for things like this, as every job is likely to turn out different, with things being rotten in different places
