Edd

Just got back home from going to the local scrapyard

I normally turn up with tools, have a chat to the lad i know down there and take off what bits i need, sort a price on the way out

Today i get down there and the lad says 'health and safety idiots have been down here and now nobody is allowed to take parts off the cars'

Seriously WTF is this country coming to ?

The bloke who owns the yard has another 7miles away in Taunton same thing happened there 3 weeks ago

Are these puppets controlled by Brussels going to shut down every scrapyard in England ?

Anyone else experienced this ?

Bout time this country fooked off all this excessive H+S crap its doing my head in

...... luckly the lad just said help yourself lol he said the yard will be gone soon as it has already lost them trade, maybe thats what the EU c0cks want

Are there signs saying appropriate clothing/footwear only and stuff like that? If so I don't see what the problem is, enter at your own risk kinda thing

Yep, has always said, enter at own risk etc

You have never been allowed in to the area where the cars are stacked on top of one another as well

just had a text back from another lad who's brother owns the other yard in town, same thing has happened there too ffs

Ours is great, we go in armed with tools, spend as long as we need in there removing anything and everything that is needed, there are even cars piled 2/3 up, there are no restrictions...........yet!

my main 2 dont stack, one says you have to report to the office to tell them your bimbling in and what for, all the cars are in kinda in order, vaux, pug, vw etc

other one you just wonder in and get what you want.

MK1_Ben
26-04-11, 05:31 PM
Our local is the same as several of the above, you're not allowed where they stack cars but you turn up, tell them what you need and they give you a high vis and a hat and off you go.

One near me (which was a great yard) used to be a case of stick your head in the door to say what you're after then wander off and find stuff. Now its been H&S'd too (or more likely, they got p!ssed off with chavs pocketing bits), so you go in the office and ask for stuff; if they got it on the shelf they'll sell it, if not then they won't bother. Mostly all they can be assed to remove are alternators and headlights though, anything else they just don't do. Which is a shame, as scrapyards are the best place to pick up random little bits of trim etc.

Another place went the same way, but then got bored of people asking for loads of bits over the counter so now all they do is take cars in, remove value stuff like cats etc, then cube the rest and don't sell anything to the public

Normally you ask a H+S fella to show you where it is written down that you can do something due to these mysterious rules that you cant do something and 9/10 times they cant, its absolute b*llocks

A couple of the backstreet ones near me have gone this way so i dont use them anymore, a few mates work at one of the biggest so i can roam free in there but one of the best (Andy knows this one, 'Sheila's) has now gone over to the above running whereby you have to ask for what you want which is a shame:cry:

Upullit is actually really good although nothing beats roaming in and out of two or three high stacked cars, balancing upside down in the third car up whilst trying to remove mk2 heater cables from twelve door novas and not rock the car enough to tip it off the top lol

My local scrappy are the same as most, go to the office, ask for what your after and they check on there comp and tell you if they've got it....

I once went down for a few nova trim bits and was told they had them but it would be pointless removing them as there not worth much lol

They only seemed to try and sell me alloys, head units and speakers lol

Anyone know if the big one in derby has been H+S? Loomeys I think it's called.

i once got a right bollocking off a friends dad (who owned a car breakers) we were fitting a scirocco engine into a caddy & needed a fair few bits.. we were given permission to get some bits from his yard... so 4 cars up on racking, i took the mounts off a golf, and pipes, cables etc... some time later, they were taking the golf off the rack with a forklift and the engine & box sort of fell out of it......narrowly missing the guard dog.

Since its not been a country wide blanket rule change, I'd wager its just a cover for stopping scumbags from stealing things "Er yeah I just need this fuse (while I have half a car in my toolbox)"

'blame' the EU all you like, but if it wasnt for the odd idiot doing stupid things then 'they' wouldnt need pretend jobs and pretend rules ;)

I wonder how many times has 'LOOMS' been mentioned? lol It seems like that is the only yard you lot have from Scouse land-Gun city! lol

We have loads up here still, a lot of the old skool one ones have gone the journey though, but living between 2 major cities, near a third and being relatively out in the sticks has it's benefits.

Let's have a think what we have left...

Sunderland - only two yards left, both sh!t and both let you get what you want although they try and watch you.

Peterlee - has the daddy of yards, NEMS, formally of Sunderland but now 10 times the size. No cars stacked, remove everything yourself.

Washington - one. Crap!

Newcastle and surroudning areas - Marshalls is OK, decent high end/newer stuff. Annoyingly he seems to just make up the prices and it's always plus VAT.

Harry Pringles, the place Spud posted has nothing on this one. You want to see the 'building' lol. Car's 4/5 high, random ladders lying around etc. Outside they have everything from cars in skips to dead mobile cranes and JCB's etc. Whatever he feels like I guess! Despite their clearout a few years back, they seem to have overlooked the Reliant Kitten that has been in the skip inside for god only knows how long! lol
You can remove your own parts there, and they're generally cheap. Some new kid has started working there now though, so it's a bit hit and miss!
It's a shame that Google Maps doesn't show the front of the building (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Newburn,+Newcastle+Upon+Tyne,+United+Kingdom&aq=0&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.956293,114.169922&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Newburn,+Newcastle+Upon+Tyne,+Tyne+And+Wear, +United+Kingdom&ll=54.980753,-1.733881&spn=0.002183,0.006968&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=54.980753,-1.733881&panoid=q5TdpPYxfKp8MjTPieE-0Q&cbp=12,269.28,,1,-7.33). I don't know why they bother locking it lol. The holes from the missing panesl are huge!

Gosforth Auto's & Backworth, both old skool. Cars piled high, dog sh!t everywhere, take off what you want, if you can't they will gas axe it off for you or dangle it above your head on a ropey old diesel, chain hi-ab thing or FLT.

Smogland - 3/4 specialist Jap breakers ran by greedy Indian folk. Sometimes it's the only way though, and they're cheaper than eBay! I've bought loads of parts there and sold them on for more.

I'm sure there's more. They're dotted about in random villages and towns. Seaton Deleval, a Vauxhall specialist breakers up Stanley way. There's loads.

This thread has chered me up, asi I thought our yards had turned really crap. Maybe they have, but there's always someone worse off! Cheers. lol

You on about Shy's Lisburn Autos (used to work there lol )

and Welly lane - Welington Lane Auto Dismantlers ?

lol both are rubbish theres no old school in there, what ever happened to sunderland metals  , i remember there was a mountain of vauxhall cavaliers and all sorts of old stuff in there

L14MNP
27-04-11, 11:33 AM
Sunderland Metals just shut up shop one day! Never mind Cavs. There was an old Skyline, Manta A, BL tat, mk1 Fiestas, mk2 Escort parts etc in there if you dug around! They were bought out by EMR and it's now just a recycling yard. I've weighed a few cars in there.

There also used to be one behind Halfords, that wasn't great at the time, but I bet I would find loads of win in there now! We usd to get loads of bits for my mates Nova and mk1 Astra. lol Rumour has it they were/became part of NEMS.

Who's Shy Lisburn, is that Rocktop behind the bingo? Co he's crap aye. The other rubbish one is next to the Ropery, that's Welington auto dismantlers aye.

There's no others any more! :(

Mostly, people are running sub 10yr old cars now and the parts suppliers are doing a fairly good job of keeping cars on the road, so the 'need' for scrap yards is falling fast. Add in fleabay for parts and frankly the idea of going to a scrappy to have an argument with a pikey and then get dirty removing a part that is most likely fecked anyway is less and less appealing lol

I was never 100% decided, but now you have just made my mind up.

You homo! lol

That reminds me of when I was looking for a 4dr parcel shelf for a Nissan.

Me - "No good mate, there's only hatches in. Cheers anyway"

Goon - "They're the same."

I explained why they are not, he argued his point, I laughed and said forget it. At which point I was told to fcuk off! lol I said who the fcuk do you think you are you talking to you ****ing idiot?!
He then was going to step from behind the counter, but seemed to momentarily forget I had a power bar in my hand. (I wanted more than just a shelf cover btw! lol)

It was a little like Snatch, with the guns and money. We both left without losing too much face. Handy really, as I doubt I would have used that, and I reckon he could have had me anyway! lol

health and safety rules are over the top. i can understand h&s rules in a scrap yard because it can be a dangerous place. i know of a scrap yard where a lad fell and hurt himself he then sued the scarp yard and got a good few thousand € out of them

now you all might understand the upullit policy of charging a quid for admission. because by agreeing to their standard terms & conditions by handing over your coin, they are covered for whatever they have written down, and you can be fairly dangerous as it won't be their fault ...same as the disclaimer on racetrack tickets.

there was a thread complaining about it, when its actually good business sense.. tbf i'm more than happy not to have to walk round dodging all the dog sh!t, and then finding that the parts they reckoned they had were not actually the right parts. (see scrapyard that baxter photographed). there is actually a load of euro legislation about clearing up the oil & other toxins during the recycling of old cars... most of the backstreet ones aren't licenced or very legal at all.

Scrappys around my way

Mallys - Best one of the lot, cars stacked 2 high, great fun getting bits yourself, staff allways helpfull and even lend you tools if you need them, really cheap, if this place gets H&S'ed then ill be very sad

Atlas Salvage - Not too bad, no stacked cars, massive space but loads wasted, not alot of cars in, mostly focuses, pasatts, golfs and the odd astra comes in, afe wnic elittle things come in though

Mcfalls - abit liek mallys, lots of wasted space though, not alot of cars, mostly ex plod cars, burnt vehicles and totaled ones

Hickmans (under the M62) - Only place with novas in, stupidley oiverpriced though! but does have stuff like mk1 astra vans, mk2 astras, novas, mk2 cars, monza's in

You're not wrong lol

There are a few others locally but in the vauxhall ones they remove parts themselves. One has a vauxhall price list and charges a third of dealer price, all well and good when the trade or trade club price is less than the scrappy wants lol

The other one has decent prices on some random stuff and then daft prices on others.
Another really annoying thing they all seem to be doing is throwing lights in the bin and then trying to flog you a naff pattern part.

Still (with the exception of Looms') they were all cubing Nova's well over 5/6 years ago so I have no need for scrappys these days.
