View Full Version : Smaller direct replacement XE alt?
As above, I was wondering what other smaller alternator's there are that are a direct replacement for the XE.
Corsa 1.2? Astra 1.4? etc
Fanks!
try looking at something like a kubota mini tractor, or a jcb 8015 mini digger. their alternators are tiny.

i have a 1.2 nova one on the let as its all i had when the xe one packed up been on there for 2 years with no problem
I need one with smaller cooling fins / or none at all! On hard cornering they catch on my chassis leg and rip themselves apart

Have you tried re-positioning the engine on the mounts? I did this on mine and gained about an extra 5mm. :)
Slot the holes in the alt move, it will move over quite a bit.
Or get the pulley, cooling fins and nut and shaft machined down.
I gained 5mm off the above and about 4 will from the first one.

yeah especially on front gbox mount:thumb:
SBD sell a kit with a smaller alternator.

Nissan Micra alternators are much smaller & lighter. Seen them used on rally Novas before.
Edd i think its about 280 all in, so yeh not cheap at all lol.
and another good link i have been keeping

You could try fitting a smaller kubota tractor one, >THREAD LINK (http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/22/viewthread.php?tid=62605)< :)

or by reading the first reply on this thread....
baxter & myself were wondering if a motorbike one, as in one without a seperate housing would be man enough for an xe. but it did involve running one off the dizzy drive of an early xe.....

I used a denso alternator off a circa 2000 daihatsu cuore. Bought off ebay, 20 quid. Looks the same as SBD's denso alternator thats nearer 200 pounds. But then i did have to buy SBD's fitting kit at 70 pounds, but it is a nice adjustable rose-joint bit of kit. Can bin any o.e tensioners off aux. belt
*EDIT: saying that, theres not much to the fitting kit; can be made for much less..
Holy crap! GM one is massive!!
Seem these on t'bay, but going down the scappy in a bit to have a nose about!

bay search the kubota ones.. there is one for £50 new.
You can look forward to a nice big hug at the Nat's Mike ;)
All sorted!! After taking a Saxo alt off and finding the mounts are in a different place, I took a Corsa one off, and it was ceased, grr!
So went to another scappy and found one of these stupid little things greeting me at the gate!

RESULT!!
One liberated alternator from a Kubota Z482 engine :) Its a 40A output so hopefully should be enough as its not powering much..
Compared to a standard XE alt.

or by reading the first reply on this thread....... which I did actually put Mowgli, however my computer logged out as I had edited my original post.
Wiring shouldn't be an issue, as its the same alt. as the one (type 1) in the link that Edd put up :)
I'm going to try and adapt the original mounts to fit it, if not, i'll go get a mount like this:

i think, i have one of those GM mounts in my shed, hmmmmmm

thats the easy bit, i meant the top part..
Not sure yet tbh, once the lower bracket is sorted, i'll slap it on and see. how did you wire in Dave? As the Nova only a one little wire, not 2..
Looking at the SBD site, it looks like you just join the 2 wires into the original Nova one...

Ive never had a problem with my alt catching on the chassis ive aorund 5-6mm gap from the leg from moving the engine on the mounts.

i know you can run a 1.0 daihatsu one, think spanishfly was running one, think he had a sbd bottom bracket tho
This is the SBD bottom bracket, GM one - just gotta find what is off..

I used a Nissan sunny alternator -

And a SBD multi V bottom pulley. The bottom alternator bracket is off a late type xe, the early ones are completly different. Hope this helps.
Mike - just waiting for an answer on the part#
Dumpy - thanks for those, its that the SBD rose joint too?

Chris mine is also an sbd c20xe rosejoint; (the bottom fixing is smallblock) but they look quite easy to make-up as mentioned before..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/peester/Photo0110.jpg
i bet a cheap set of rose joints, 2 bits of angle iron & some threaded rod or even a bit of gas work on a std alt bracket will still be way cheaper than a sbd kit.

That was my plan with the top mount :)
Any idea on the wiring Mike? New alt has wires off it, orignial nova wiring only has one?

I made a couple at work. Bought the rose joints and used a slim nut to lock it once tensioned. If you make it make sure one rose joint is a reverse thread else the rose joints wont move apart meaning you cant push the alternator away thus unable to tension the belt. The only issue I had was working out which terminal the "exciter" wire goes to and what length belt to use.
Here's exactly what I used as I wasn't prepared to pay what SBD wanted for their kit -
A Nissan sunny alternator A575
2x aluminiun spacers (one 14.5 mm and one 10mm).
2x M8 allen cap head bolts (30mm long)with washers.
2 1/2 inch long tapped bar with M8 left hand thread one side and M8 right hand thread one the other.
2x male M8 Tie rods (with spherical bearings) one left hand thread and one right.
1x slim M8 nut. Used to lock the tie rod.
1x 4 groove alternator belt 843mm long.
SBD's 110mm 4v alloy bottom pulley.
Late type xe alternator bracket(from the engine with the multi V alternator).

the piccy tells it all, big wire to starter/battery. and the label shows IG & L connections.. IG for ign +ve, and L for light. the gm method involves running the ign feed thru the light to the alternator. first off, i'd say try just running the +ve thru the ig connection. it could work straight away
failing that, i reckon you could bypass the charge light & rewire it from the L terminal back thru to the dash & work an earth into it.
ps. i found this linky...http://www.aixam-cars.co.uk/index.html,
they are in S O T...
first off, i'd say try just running the +ve thru the ig connection. it could work straight away
I was going to try that way first tbh and see what happens :)

just look in a lot of small engined japanese cars like a suzuki alto. lots of them have tiny alternators on them.
Yea, I used the one in the pics above. I'll get round to a 'how to' soon..
