Here is my X18XE1 Corsa B

The Engine was fitted in Feb/Mar

It came from a 1999 Vectra B LS (I have the Donor Logbook)

It is a Mechanical Throttle

Some of the later Vectra B's used the Z18XE which likely used the Fly-by-Wire Throttle, the earlier Small Block 1.8s were X18XE1 Mechanical Throttle - the even earlier 1.8s were Big Blocks based on the X20XEV Ecotec

The Z18XE was the engine used in the Corsa C SRi and again maybe some of the later Astra G models. The Corsa C is FBW only, not Mechanical - there are Mechanical Throttle Astras etc out there.

The Z18XE is the more powerful of the Smallblock 1800s - you can use either engine, but to retain a Mechanical Throttle, you need to use an X18XE1 Throttle Body (the Z18XE/X18XE1 Inlet Manifolds are compatible, although the Z has a better design that you can fit to the X as an upgrade - also the X18XE1 has a variable inlet that works from an engine speed sensor to provide more torque at lower revs and more power at higher revs)

EDIT - Another main difference between the Z18XE and the X18XE1, other than the Throttle Body, especially on the Vectra B is that the X18XE1 had a 'normal' exhaust manifold as in my pics above, with the cat on the Downpipe section - the Z18XE equipped Vectra B had the Cat built into the Manifold section and a plain downpipe.

Again the above applies to the Astra G, (including the Coupe that was fitted with both X18XE1 & Z18XE)

I have recently bought a 2000 X reg Vauxhall Astra Coupe Bertone 16V 1.8L, it has an Irmsher badge and wind deflector but im not sure whether it has been tuned by them or not. I bought the car knowing of only a few minor problems and have opened up a can of worms. I have had a new cambelt fitted, new disc brakes, tires and new power steering pump (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_nkw=power+steering+pump) which are electrical on this model, when i first got the car it went very quickly, now after about a month, it is not going above 90MPH and when i put my foot down the engine does nothing and takes about 10 seconds to respond and then accelrates. the car has a fly by wire (electrical) and not a cable for the throttle, i found this out when i was trying to figure out the problem, i first thought it was the air flow regulator, which i unplugged but found this did not solve the problem and this should have turned the engine management light on, which it didnt. the air filter was very dirty but this did not solve anything either. i was told it mite have been a cat failure or a blocked exhuast but this was not the problem because it idled fine and when reved in first and neutral it was fine. Another idea was it was either the injectors or the throttle, i am not sure what to do now and it is getting dangerous not being able to pull out in fear of the engine not responding and not moving. please can you help.

gareth is correct, you can definitely get fly by wire x18xe1 engines. the engine in my mums vectra is identical to the one pictured in the corsa and has the cat on the downpipe. oh and it has x18xe1 stamped on it lol. bought it brand new aswell. 2001 y reg club estate.

It's too new for an X18XE1 though - they were used up to/including 2000 as Euro Emissions Regs meant the Z18XE was developed and used instead from 2001...



More differences;

The Z18XE uses the Simtec90 ECU and the X18XE1 uses the Simtec70 ECU

Late Z18XE's don't have an EGR Valve - all X18XE1's do and early Z18XE's too

X18XE1 has a paper Oil Filter - all Z18XE's have Screw on Cartridge Oil Filters
