im planning on painting my nova myself to see how it turns out, not gonna be a show winner obviously but was just wondering what kind of paint is best and what exactly would i need eg. hardeners and laquer primer etc if someone could point me in the right direction?? its vauxhall glacier white and keeping it the same colour:thumb: wanting to go the the local paint place hopefully this week and buy everything i need so need to make a list.

I was planning to do the same as you to save money, but after getting a quote from a local body repair garage to give mine a flash over in red, it worked out much more economical and far less hassle to get them to do it.

So unless you really want to paint it yourself, I'd consider this option

most that work is but only as a base coat then pulling the compressor out to finish the job get it looking smart :d

surely it would be easier and you'd get a better finish if you used the gun in the first place?

Take some up close photos showing the sheen + reflection in it, then compare that to a paint job done with a gun and compressor :)

You would have to flat the old paintwork back so the new paint work is stroger and doesnt flake off easily, also ensure the surface is clean and dry, going over with at least if not more coats of primer then your colour, if its white then im sure it wont matter too much what white paint you use. I only use the proper miami blue colour of my car that i get from sams mum who has contacts in vauxhall :). But i would also laquer it too, just be careful it dont run. Also best do it on a hot day so it dry easier but also inside so it doesnt trap any bugs and dust in paint work. You proberly know all this already i just wanted to sound clever :)

I did this at the weekend with wwmnw's nova if the white is a solid white, you will need the paint, hardener, thinners, panel wipe and some lint free cloths.
If you are just freshening up the outside about 1.5ltr shouuld be more than enough bu its upto you if you wanna allow for mistakes.
If there is not rust, of marks on the paint you shouldnt need to prime it but again thats your choice if you wanna start from scratch.
Rub the car down with 800 wet and dry so the original coating on the car has gone dull this is now classed as "keyed".
wipe the car with panel wipe so there is no silcones or anything that could cause a reaction.
Mix the paint at a ratio of 56% paint 33% hardener maybe a splash of thinners IF REQUIRED. a take your time with the coats hold the gun at approx 8-10inches from the panel and leave it at least a couple of minutes for the paint to flash between coats. Well that how i did it :thumb:

got a new rear quater to fit aswell and seam welding the engine bay, its a bare shell job the car is totally stripped so going to give the inside a paint aswell as going for the stripped out look, im in no rush to do it so dont want to rush it just want to do it right, the whole car will be getting poly bushed and all components powder coated aswell.

iirc approx 2.5-3ltrs of paint should do if you have any bare metal on show you want a self etching primer. I would try and get something called mipa rapid filler its a brilliant primer to work from
