Well ive been smoking since a early age and I've finally decided to quit for good, is tried in the past wih patches etc and had no luck.

My GP is prescribing me Champix on Tuesday. Which has a quit rate of 44% which is the highest.

Has anyone quit on this before? Good and bad experiences please,
I've googled it but the majority of the cases are yanks who are hypocondriacts.

I had a friend who reacted badly to champix, and i think there are a few cases of people going a bit loopy, i do know if you have/had any mental illness problems then this is not suitable. I managed very easily with inhalator and after 20 yrs of 20-30 a day i stopped completely with in about 3 weeks.

I would advise you do a little bit more research into champix before you start on them.

good luck :thumb:

you will get nowhere without willpower. get stubborn with yourself....i wouldn't recommend cold turkey, cos it tastes boring, but stopping smoking & getting the physical craving out of your system is the only real way to stop, it takes about a week, the rest is purely you thinking you need it.

I'd research into it a bit more from the sounds of it.
Like Mowgli said, you really do need will power. I quit cold turkey and found the first week to be really difficult but after that it was slightly easier. It was my year anniversary of not smoking just over 2 weeks ago :)
It helps trying to avoid small enclosed spaces where people are smoking for the enitial first week or so and just having the power to say no if someone offers you one.
With a bit of determination you can do it! :thumb:

Just keep thinking about all the money you could save by not buying them, which you can then spend on fun toys.

I quit cold turkey after an epic busy couple days on doing jobs on the car and stuff and not having a cig the whole time, i then realised i didn't need them anymore, smoked for near 8 years and haven't had one since january. Best thing is when im out (drinking) and im in the smoking area i don't have the temptation anymore and think its horrid now.
As mowgli said it doesn't matter what patches or methods, your will power is the main thing that you need, i used chewing gum as my method, every time i felt the need to have a cigarette i chewed on a chewing gum.
Only disadvantage now is that i put on about a stone and half due to bad eating habits which i have now stopped, but difference is now i have quit i have managed to retake up football and biking which is now helping me keep fit and lose the weight :)

there was a telly show once where they got a bloke to give up by showing him what his habit over 10 years would have actually bought....... it was amazing...

I did quit cold turkey a few years back but started again due to a stressful family situation.

I can have will power but if things to tits up in life I smoke...
Patches bring me up in a rash and the inhalators make the back of my throat swell lol so GP told me to stop using them. I just cant go cold turkey now but would really love to quit, I spend about £180 a month. And I'd rather be buying things for my Nova with that money.

Just be careful with the champix.......if friends/family notices a change in your moods and/or behaviour then stop taking them.
My friend couldn't see it but i did, he was a completely different person( not a nice 1 either).

^ just be careful as anyone coming off the cancer sticks is likely to be flipping out a bit anyway, so don't be too quick to blame it on the champix (yes I'm aware of its side effects)

Oddly enough, there's a thread on CCUK about this as well, a guy on there has been offered it. Similar opinions to here tbh, mixed reviews - seems some have no bad effects, whilst some fly off the handle.

oh yeah and smoking causes cancer, etc etc

No, but it would have been a lot worse if I had been a smoker :p

They had to cut round my belly button. If that was cleft in twain, my arse would have fallen off!

I found the patches did that to me....after 3 nights of the most bizarre dreams i had to stop using them and just stick to the inhalator...:)

I smoked for well over fifteen years and i quit two years ago last december, had a couple over new years that year as i was trashed as most people are at new year lol

Then never had another one after, tried one at billing last year after some massively bad news and was nearly sick and gave it to Mike:p

If you want to quit you will quit, no need for silly patches or drugs or hypnotism, if YOU really want to quit, then YOU will do it and noone else!

My best mate did champix, Turned him into a total NUTTER!

Different for different people though. Few of my mates did it and the general side effects across all of them were the following.....

Mood swings
Inability to enjoy dairy products
Lack of sex drive and Vivid/wet dreams (contradiction or WHAT)
Inability to process alcohol (Turned yellow after a bender or just got hammered quick and puked HARDCORE)
Lack of sense of smell
Diarrhoea
Bad breath, and finally my favourite....

Tooth paste tasting like rotting meat! (That was only one of them though) lol

Sorry to bring my old topic back.

I've now been quit for 3 days, I decided to quit on my 10th day of takin them.
When taking the 0.5 tabs they gave me very very weird dreams, and the 1mg tabs made my eyes sting. But since quitting they've stopped stinging and havnt wanted one since I decided that was it :)

So from my result I'm glad I went and got them lol
