Im not usually one to buy trade in cars from work as usually theyre absolute nails and full of the most undesireable muck and filth (which unfortunately this one is lol)

But anyways the other week an astra 1.6 16v SXi came traded in looking very sorry for itself...

One owner from new, full mot and four months tax, in need of a massive valet, a few bits of trim but not in any way rusty or as bad as it looks, and when i was told the price (£200) i couldnt really say no...

It does have issues though as it cuts out once the temp guage hits 90 (running temp on these iirc) ive flashed up the codes and it seems to think its the knock sensor so im sending it to my mates garage on saturday so he can throw spanners at it till it works lol

But anyways gave it a quick bath and a basic hoover out before i brought it home last night (didnt want a car outside my house looking like it had been dredged out of the humber)

All in all not a bad bus, needs a bit of work but considering theyre doing about £2k on gaybay, its worth sorting and using as a solid runner so i can look at getting my nova covered on a classic policy:thumb:

check the oil level, usually the cause of the knock sensor codes

Just done this and it was right at the bottom of the dipstick, so chucked a bit of oil in it which took the level up to the top of the stick and went for a squirt, it only seems to cut out when the temp guage reaches halfway which i think is 90, so in theory if i drive it with the heaters on and dont let it get that warm it shouldnt cut out yes? lol

Btw just run it up and it did indeed cut out, knew it wouldnt be anything as simple as low oil but im sure my mate will cure it, other than that it drives spot on, no knocks or smoke or anything and pulls really well for a lil 1600:thumb:

Dealer sticker in the back window and the reg plates say 'reg vardy' and comes from gateshead originally iirc!

Sound motor for 200quid!

Normal running temp is about the first mark on the gauge, fan kicks in half way.

Sounds a strange problem, like something is getting hot causing an intermittent fault, maybe coil pack(s), fuel pump relay maybe. Cant see it being knock sensor tbh

Spudly
17-04-11, 05:10 PM
Funny you should bump this Ad, as i was thinking about updating it myself, taken it to my mates garage on sat and left it with him, he has had his snap-on computer on it and it cut out duly at halfway on the temp guage, it came back as knocking on all four cylinders and open fuel pump relay circuit something or other, so he said he suspected fuel pump relay from the start off, if its not fueling right the mixture will be lean and make it knock apparently?

He is the qualified one so ill go with what he says, so he is going to change that, then give it an oil change and knock sensor if needs be, he is fairly confident its the relay, but is going to drop the oil anyways and while its there he is going to regas my aircon for free too:thumb:

Said i should have it back by tuesday as a reliable runner:d

Adam
17-04-11, 06:21 PM
Can he come regass my air con too lol lol

Good guess eh ;)
Relay getting hot, staying "open" when it should be closed meaning no fuel pump or injectors working.....

Spudly
17-04-11, 06:33 PM
You could probably come to him as an aircon machine is a fairly bulky item so its overly mobile lol

Aye im hoping its something silly easy like that and will be a cheap fix, all the numpties at work think im stupid for taking it on as it needs some interior replacing due to the mileage and the airbag light is on but thats passenger seat pretensioner voltage high so that needs replacing, £10+vat for a seat from upullit, so if i can find a low mileage sxi there ill take full interior and im onto a winner nice and cheap:d

Hush Bubba, im actually looking forward to driving a car that i can sail over speedbumps at the reckless speeds of 20mph, or drive over twigs and railway crossings without having to anchor up and crawl over, so i reckon this one is just going to get fueled and driven, plus i can hoy bikes in the back and venture into Andy's local woods aswell without fear of grounding or being broken into whilst out on the trails:d

Nice little buy there Spudders. Looks good cleaned up. Could net you a tidy profit if you sell it on. Cant sell it on here though....not that all of us now know what you paid for it lol ;) :p

17-04-11, 09:02 PM
Lol cheers Pete, but ive not entirely bought it for profit, ive bought an '03 reg astra SXi, a car 'joe public' would probably pay £2.5k for at a dealer, for £200, albeit with issues but well worth trying to sort, then fingers crossed i should have a reliable, safe daily i can leave anywhere without fear of it being stolen or burnt out, i certainly wouldnt leave my xe nova outside overnight and i live in a fairly good area:eek:

Bump for this thread, thought id put up a few recent shots of the astra, the car i was going to leav standard and not mess about with in any way whatsoever, LOL!!

So for those who havent seen it, she looked like this when i first got her back in April.......

And after finding a few bits and bobs here there and everywhere, a damned good machine polish, and plenty of regular waxing and applications of superguard (along with an Irmscher boot spoiler and double 'D' exhaust, wind deflectors and debadged grille, less battered headlights from the coupe turbo that Joff is breaking, with the tops painted to match the car, and an Irmscher lowering kit sourced from the bay) she now looks like this....
