well i got the car started petrol guage was empty so turned it off and went and got some petrol put it in and now it wont start

the fuel pump wont come on when turning over but if i hook it up the a spare battery it will

but when i disconnect the pump from the original wiring the ecu turns off as in the eml light goes out and wont fire up with the pump running

i have my switched live for the ecu running from the fusebox from the wiper motor fuse
any ideas folks?

anyone have a layout for the fusebox on a mk1?

relay or fuse?

ive just checked the fusebox and the fuse that i have my switched live to my ecu connected to is getting power

the relay is clicking away when turning over but the pumps not coming on

shouldnt the wire that goes to the pump be 0v untill i turn it over and then go up?

strange thing is my wipers have now stopped working lol

i dont understand how when i disconnect my fuel pump my ecu goes off

maybe an earth from my ecu?
could my ecu be earthing out via the fuel pump?

it should read 0 untill you turn the power then it should read i guess 12v? or we power is geting to it.

im guessing it a wiring issue as your wipers dont work...

yep im thinking im gonna have to re-wire the ecu into it :(

hmmm

the wiper motor, how is this earthed?

is it through the bracket that its bolted to that bolts to the bulkhead?

i noticed that the bolts/screws werent in right so i tightend them up and the motor started working again

but when screwing the bolts in there were a couple small sparks coming from the bolt?

ok so i ran a wire from the screw that earths the wiper motor to the - on the battery tried to start it but batterys going a bit flat as the relay wouldnt click but....

the wire to the fuel pump no longer has a live all the the i.e. when not cranking

so ill slap the battery on charge tonight and see if she starts tomorrow

the ecu must have been earthing out via the fuel pump then since when it was disconnected the ecu turned off

p.s. im giving my self answers in the topic lol

Lol..

And maybe your Fpump is ****ed will it spin when not wired into the relay eg streight to battery?

lol

The ecu will only send 1 short 12v pulse to the fuel pump on the intial turn of the key to prime the fuel lines.

Once the engine fires it will turn into a constant 12v feed :thumb:

As for sparks on the wiper motor, somehow somewhere you have a major wiring fault as either the wiper motor or the shell is seeing a +12v feed!!!

Not a good fault to have

Make sure the ecu is well earthed e.g if your putting it straight to the shell, make sure the paint is cleaned around the terminal.

For the feed for the ecu above the glove box there should be some nice thick red wires for you to attach to.

Hope this helps matey

sorry mean to say the sparks were coming from the lower right bolt that hols the bracket onto the bulkhead

i have found this out to be the earth for the motor, my engine bay has just been sprayed and i didnt know that was an earth so ill clean out the bolt hole and surrounding area so it earths fine

after i earthed the motor to the battery the fuel pump wire wasnt permanent 12v anymore (before cranking) so i think thats fixed that part as my switched live on my ecu is connected to the wiper motor fuse

the battery is on charge tonight and ill post back what happens in the morning

fingers crossed its fine

ive not changed any of the wiring from when i took the engine out i didnt even disconnect the loom and it ran fine before

all fixed :)

i went round every single earth i could find cleaned them up and made a new earth for my battery and it works fine :)

god i hate electrical fault finding

I just sorted my friends wiring as a rat had got behind the dash board and had a little nibble :tard:

this is gods way of telling you that fitting a mk2 dash was a mistake.
