View Full Version : Tints (and the laws on them)

Just wondering if anyone has got a relatively dark tint on the nova, as I am thinking about mine.

Also I know the law states that you have to have 70% light showing through IIRC, however, is that through the window?? Or to the cabin?? Only I have been told that as long as the front quarter panel window isn't tinted, then you can have the front window tinted as dark as the rears. Any pointers on this before I make a complete tit of myself??

Anything from the b-pillar forward needs to be 70% or whatever it is, pretty much no tint is light enough for it to be legal.

From b-pillar back (sides and rear window) can be as dark as you want.

The light level is measured directly through the glass, dont forget that factory glass tint already restricts the amount of light that gets through the glass. Pretty safe to say that you cant fit ANY tint to the front sides.

(Coming from someone that got pulled on the m6 for having the lightest tint you can buy on front side windows, it was removed at the side of the road as it only let about 65% of light through....) lol

front windscreen can't have anything more than a factory supplied tint & front door glasses can't have less than 70% light. now remember that it means the glass and the tint combined. then factor in a copper who hasn't had sex all week & some kid in a nova with tints & you will get raddled

No bloody point then... And I think I remember reading something about someone getting pulled over, and then someone else turning up to measure it?? They use some sort of light device?? Christ knows what the name of it is lol

lol to be fair my nova is in a state, and I've recieved nothing but laughs, some nasty some otherwise when I have been pulled over. So I guess it can't get any worse.

Anyone know how to test it yourself??

the only people with test equipment in your area will be the rozzers... so just be very careful, and get some that is only just tinted, and well within tolerance.

Yes they use a light meter ("tintman") that shines a beam through the glass, and a receiver then measures it on the other side, it gives a readout in %

IIRC my astra glass lets through 70% of light from the factory, which is the legal limit. So ANY tint added to that makes them illegal (which i found out)

Not even anything on egay? Something like that usually pops up...

Hmm, any ideas on standard glass tint on the nova from factory?? Or would it depend on how clean I had it at the time??

You can buy light meters (local parts place to me stocks them), don't know of what use they would be though, plus they're pretty pricey.

The standard tint % is usually printed on the glass in the corner.

Windscreen 30% tint max, "side of driver" 35% max tint, behind driver and rear windscreen no max. As said, standard glass (even clear class) will restrict light throughput.

Just had a look on my astra standard door glass "Min light transmission 70%"

So ANY tint on my windows makes them illegal lol

lol

I shall check the levels printed on the glass later when I go out and see if it still where I left it....

Right it doesn't say anywhere on the glass about minimum light transmission... Any help in pointing me in the right direction??
