Just thought I'd share my mini project with you,
Im on a tight budget due to saving for a house

Ive decided to start off with stripping the front end and replacing all ball joints and bushes (upgrade to polybushes) Whilst all hubs and arms are off they are getting stripped back and painted for a clean look

so heres the car:

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/IMG_0218.jpg?t=1302338425

I've cleaned all crap off the parts and spent a day rubbing down brake calipers (ohh what fun) and these are almost ready for paint

Well i bought myself a welder and been practicing before i set upon the engine bay, my welding is not the best but ok, I wanted peoples opinion on the alternator mod for chassis leg, Do you think i've taken enough space out?

01-05-11, 01:08 AM
Looks about rite if you put a piece of 10 ml flat rubber behind the front rite mount between it and the chassis leg it will stop the engine moving over too much and rubbing with the alternator pulley engine moves a lot on these mounts that's why it rubs every where

I've been very busy! finished stitch welding the engine bay, seam sealer and sprayed the bay, paint finishes isnt great but its okay for under the bonnet, this is by no means a show car!

Finally got my 2.0 hubs fitted!! also gave the calipers a paint with e-tech caliper paint but the paint itself was awful to work with and can't get a decent finish?? so they wont be staying like that:(
Suspension is only temporary as ill be ordering gaz coilovers end of month

The engine has been stripped and gave it a clean, followed by a lick of hammerite silver, waiting for bearings, piston rings, 2.0 8v sump gasket etc etc!! The head has gone to be rebuilt so will get pics up of engine build when the heads back

i did have some problems with the gearbox mount, the rubber mount for the back of the engine was a right pig to get on, sturggled to get it to line up and not sure if ive got the rubber on the right way as you can rotate it 180 degrees?! but i do have an interesting question, see pic below, what is this plug for?? theres nothing on my nova loom?? originally a 1.0 car, did a bit of scanning on here, is it a live feed required? if so wheres best to get it from? the plug is located just behind the coil pack near brake cylinder
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/IMG_0357.jpg?t=1309719497

Thats the main ECU feed - wire it up to a perm live somewhere from the car's loom.

Mazz
10-07-11, 10:09 AM
Isn't that the switch live Will? Not a perm live?

sneakycorsa
10-07-11, 10:19 AM
single black wire in the photo is switch live feed,

markmcgivern
10-07-11, 12:47 PM
so where does it go? any ign live feed?? wiring is my gremlin! hate it dont know anything about it

Spudly
10-07-11, 01:03 PM
Engine looks stunning, wish id done that with mine before it went in now lol

Black wire in that pic is indeed your switched live feed for the ecu, best place for it is the +ve feed that was originally for your coil when it was a carb engine as thats an ignition live too:thumb:

markmcgivern
17-07-11, 12:23 AM
spent most of the day working out the wiring! bit of a nightmare, wired in the rev clock and water temp easy but couldnt find the red/blue trace for fuel pump and there was no brown/blue trace for ecu light, turns out the fuel pump wire was direct to the engine bay where the old gte loom/ecu plugged into the nova loom, so i cut it, puled it through into the car!
also on the nova loom where the gte engine loom plugged in there were just a few wires, green, blue, reb/blue trace, and brown/white trace which i assume is the ecu light (was working as it light came on a few times previously, so brown/blue to brown/white hope this is right!
just waiting for my roose hoses to arrive so i can start it,
I currently have no alternator, if i rig it up with jump leads will it e sufficiant to start it???

markmcgivern
30-07-11, 03:34 PM
bit of an update - my roose hoses arrived and are now plumbed in, pics to follow, ive tried wiring in the loom but have hit some problems

i cannot get it to turn over to start with! firstly, how do you check the starter motor works?? i guessed that it would work if i put it straight onto the battery it would wizz over or am i wrong? http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/IMG_0430.jpg?t=1312036321

here is how ive wired in the ecu - you can see on the pic the plug that used to connect to the old ecu off a gte mpi engine. i simply took the red wire with a blue trace and pulled it through into the car and connected to same on the xe loom, then ive used the black wire assuming its ign live and connected to spare wire on loom by box, and thirdly there is no brown/yellow trace wire for ecu light so ive assumed that the brown/white trace that was at the plug is the ecu light? there is typically a blue and green wire here also for temp guage and revs
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/IMG_0431.jpg?t=1312028744
ive wired in the ignition live for the loom near the gearbox, and also tested to make sure it is live once i turn the key so i know this is okay!
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/IMG_0432.jpg?t=1312028744
another thing i wanted to check is my earths, im confident i have them right, battery to chassis obvious, loom earths are all on inlet manifold, and earth strap, and the one by the headlights goes down to earth strap on box
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/IMG_0433.jpg?t=1312028744

any thoughts would help a heap as i hate wiring and dont even know how to test stuff

thanks for the comments, still a long way to go, its by no means a show car, im building it for track days, going to get painted over the winter,

theres a long way to go on the car yet!
- one of my new front gaz struts is leaking:cry: got to send that off to be repaired
- plumb in oil pressure guage next weekend
- fit camber adjusting bolts
- buy new headlights (eurocarparts.com do new valeo ones) the adjusters are goosed on mine
- get to under inlet manifold to tighten up hose clamps (tiny annoying leak)
- get and fit strut brace
- drop oil for some fresh stuff
- carbon lorraine pads
- new fancy exhaust system
- need to source a gm n/s wing
- get the car painted over winter

still got a bit to do!

It would have to be a later Gsi style airbox - as the GTE etc have the AFM connected... I have one somewhere that I had fitted to my XE

Have been busy testing and ironing out little problems with the way the engine was running, I had a brand new oil pump fail on me but didnt damage the engine! So had to buy new oil pump and decided to go for some nice stack guages to keep an eye on things along with SBD's nylon relief valve kit for the pump with is a must!
also got a pod off ebay that fits well, although im on the hunt for a set of new clocks as the ones in it are shagged and have crappy blue lights http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/S1051020.jpg?t=1321718837
I have a lot of work to do over the winter now the car is off the road,
first thing im doing is pucker engine mounts as the rear one has too much movement
also the standard steering is pants so ive already taken it off and ordered a quaife quick rack
one of my gaz coilovers decided to leak so thats about to be sent off for repair
the brakes are okay, the hoses make a difference but need to try some good pads and discs
the gearbox needs to be rebuilt so have contacted the gearbox man to see if they can make some improvements on it
the chassis is going to be stripped underneath and treated/sealed
need a gm mk1 passenger wing or pair
heres some picshttp://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/S1051018.jpg
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/S1051014.jpg

thanks for the comments, been doing a bit more to it today but not much,
i pulled the side skirts off today is i'd like to do them in upol plastic look. Also gives me a chance to look at the sills and stop any corrosion and do some repairs.
Quite impressed with underneath, its had a lil bit of work on the passenger side already but it looks rot free, the drivers side needs a small patch but ill get that done very soon.
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/S1051045.jpg
the drivers door has started to corrode but its only small and underneath/inside there perfect so will sort this out in the next few weeks. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/S1051050.jpg
Also stripped the steering rack ready to put quaife parts in!

interestingly i noticed that a spring had broke on the throttle body allowing the butterfly to move around freely, but interestingly this faulty unit is an earlier type off a dizzy engine and I have a spare DIS type unit, they have slightly different shape and the butterfly on the later has a wedge. Does anyone know if the enlarged versions that have been polished are worth having?
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h455/Mark_McGivern/S1051048.jpg
Im also going to freshen up the fuel rail and have the injectors cleaned and tested for optimum performance, they may not be performing to their best!

been a while since ive done any work on the nova since moving house but im glad to report i am extremely busy working on it!
After running a redtop in the car and having fun, engines too heavy to corner, IMO fast in a straight line but when you get to a corner they dont want to know.
SO, big plans now are to have it stripped out with a cage and make it light as possible with a small block engine

Ive been very busy taking the front panel off (rotten)
After getting the whole panel off i nearly fell over when i saw that the front tow eye was 1/8 welded on by a bit of bird pooh! it fell of when i touched it!!!

small update:
been sidetracked with the garage a little building a work bench and sorting out extra plug sockets

Had a good day on the car today, repaired the drivers side splash guard, also repaired the drivers chassis leg to accommodate the new front panel and started assembling the front end to see how everything fits.

this is a rough assembly as i have a big problem with the front panel and cant remember how the front mk2 headlights locate? i suspect that its a mk1 front panel or am i missing something? any comments on what the fecks going on will help me a lot!!!

Hey buddy, found this on a forum -
If you HAVE to convert to mk2 front end you need -

2 headlights + clips
2 indicators
2 wings
a bumper
bumper bar/irons (although bar itself may be swappable)
grill
and you'll need to mod the mk1's slam panel as the clips for the mk2 grill wont fit as the mk1 has less clips than the mk2. Need to get the drill and files out.

Plus you'll need to respray the front end obviously unless youve been lucky and got the same colour.

what did you do with the gte engine mate
Just thought I'd share my mini project with you,
Im on a tight budget due to saving for a house

Ive decided to start off with stripping the front end and replacing all ball joints and bushes (upgrade to polybushes) Whilst all hubs and arms are off they are getting stripped back and painted for a clean look

so heres the car:

I've cleaned all crap off the parts and spent a day rubbing down brake calipers (ohh what fun) and these are almost ready for paint
