I marked the cogs up before removal but i think the car could do with retiming any how..
How do i do it
is it a case of make the pistons central so all on half stroke and the the rocker pulley cog make the little indented line be facing at 12 oclock (streight up)

Piston one needs to be at TDC i believe

is it piston 1 and 4 at tdc and the cam pulley mark facing at 12?
You need to buy a Haynes manual

IIRC that's right :thumb:
you time the bottom pulley to its mark by rocking the car forward in a high gear, then pull the handbrake up when it is in the right place.
then you time the top pulley to its mark, then put the belt on, then tension it with the NEW water pump, and then knock it out of gear, & turn the engine over by using a spanner onto the crank pulley to check it turns right & it still in the right place when you have done 2 full rotations....then turn it over on the ign to get the oil up, then refit the plugs & start it.
i have a spare haynes if you want it posting to you..
do u not have to make sure the valves on no1 are on the rock?
it really doesn't matter about the valves... the timing position was designed by gm for a reason.... as long as the hydraulic lifters have been drained down before assembly (squeeze them, it comes out) the valves won't be in the way.
ye but dont you need to make sure its away to fire on 1 and not 4
if the 2 timing marks are lined up, then it is timed right. its not like you are putting an old pushrod engine back together & need to get the tappets adjusted... it really is as simple as lining the 2 up & fitting the belt!!!! the old 8v's were camshaft timed for the injection
